Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich on Tuesday signed Expedited Bill 23-26E, updating the County’s firearms law to comply with a Maryland Supreme Court ruling while preserving the strongest local gun restrictions allowed under State law.
The Montgomery County Council is scheduled to vote Tuesday on two major measures that would significantly restrict data centers in the county. The Council will consider Zoning Text Amendment (ZTA) 26-01, which would establish formal definitions for data centers and, as amended, prohibit new data centers countywide while officials develop long-term regulations.
Montgomery County Councilmember At-Large Laurie-Anne Sayles was reappointed to the National Association of Counties (NACo) Board of Directors during the organization’s 2026 Annual Conference, where she also advanced three national policy resolutions and participated as a featured speaker on public health and housing affordability. The Montgomery County Council has scheduled several public hearings on upcoming legislation and funding proposals, including a $12 million state grant for community health programs, expanded survivor benefits for certain public employees, stricter licensing requirements for bodywork establishments, forest conservation and zoning changes, updates to road design standards, funding for the Olney Community Building and Police Satellite Station, revisions to the Fire and Emergency Services Commission, and proposed changes to disruptive behavior policies at public facilities. Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich will sign legislation Monday updating the County’s firearms law to comply with a Maryland Supreme Court ruling while maintaining many of the local gun restrictions still permitted under state law.
Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich says the County has recorded 26 fatal traffic crashes so far in 2026, including nine involving pedestrians, as officials continue efforts to reduce speed limits and improve roadway safety through the County’s Vision Zero initiative.
The Montgomery County Animal Services and Adoption Center in Derwood will waive all adoption fees on Saturday, Aug. 1, as part of NBCUniversal’s annual “Clear the Shelters” campaign.’
Two Montgomery County Council committees will meet Monday, July 27, to review a range of education and housing issues. The Education and Culture Committee will discuss MCPS’ Strategic Technology Plan, artificial intelligence policy, and student cell phone policy, while the Planning, Housing and Parks Committee will consider updates to accessory dwelling unit and solar zoning rules to comply with state law, as well as a bill that would require most single-family rental homes to provide air conditioning from May 15 through Sept. 30.
