As you travel east on University Boulevard from downtown Wheaton, past the commercial strips and gas stations, you’ll encounter a Georgian Revival brick house with imposing chimneys. This simple but elegant home, with its symmetrical design and matching bay windows, stands in stark contrast to the modernist Art Deco WSJV Transmitter across the street and the post-WWII Ranch and Split-Level houses scattered throughout the nearby neighborhoods. The historic house was the home of Romeo and Elsie Horad. Built on Elsie’s ancestral land, the house stands as a testament to the achievements of the Websters, Sewells, and Horads who worked tirelessly to improve conditions for African American residents throughout Montgomery County and Washington, DC.
Montgomery County will host a ceremony on Monday, February 24 to rename the Executive Office Building in Rockville in honor of former County Executive Isiah “Ike” Leggett, recognizing his decades of public service. (more…)

The Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD) has shared that 2nd District officers are investigating a shooting in the 4400 block of S. Park Ave. in Chevy Chase.
The Montgomery County Council unanimously passed the Uplifting Victims and Immigrant Safety Act, removing a local restriction that required violent crimes to have occurred within the past 10 years for victims to qualify for U visa certification. Peerless Rockville will commemorate Black History Month with a virtual presentation on February 20 exploring the history and community of Rockville’s Lincoln Park neighborhood, followed by an in-person event on March 13 discussing a 1936 civil rights case in Rockville that contributed to the fight against school segregation. MCDOT has shared that due to maintenance work, Metrorail service will be impacted from Saturday, February 1 from 7 a.m. – 1 a.m. and Sunday, February 2 from 7 a.m. – Midnight. On the Red Line, Metro will replace switches at Friendship Heights interlocking, perform rail and fastener renewal and third rail maintenance, and conduct grout pad repair and leak mitigation.
