MSI Announces Participation in MLS GO to Enhance Youth Soccer Development in Montgomery County

Per MSI: Montgomery Soccer Inc (MSI), a premier youth soccer organization in Montgomery County, Maryland has signed on as an official league operator of MLS GO. Powered by Major League Soccer, MLS GO, is a recreational soccer program designed to increase participation and access for boys and girls outside of the existing soccer ecosystem. This initiative is poised to revolutionize youth soccer development and extend its benefits to all communities within the county.

In addition to offering state-of-the-art soccer training resources, MSI will introduce MLS GO via their comprehensive after-school programs for all children. These programs will not only impart soccer skills but will also promote character development, teamwork, and life skills, using soccer as a vehicle for personal growth. The program will be implemented with support from RCX Sports, the leaders in youth sports experiences, who have partnered with MLS to operate and manage MLS GO.

Montgomery County Council to Hold Committee Meetings on Oct. 2, 2023

Per Montgomery County: The Public Safety (PS) Committee will meet on Monday, Oct. 2 at 9:30 a.m. to receive a briefing on Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD) staffing changes for the cities of Rockville and Gaithersburg. In addition, the committee will review Bill 32-23, Police – Policing Advisory Commission – Amendments. The members of the PS Committee include Chair Sidney Katz and Councilmembers Dawn Luedtke and Kristin Mink.

The Planning, Housing and Parks (PHP) Committee will meet at 1:30 p.m. to receive a briefing from representatives of the Department of Housing and Community Affairs (DHCA) on code enforcement and troubled properties. The members of the PHP Committee include Chair Andrew Friedson and Councilmembers Natali Fani-González and Will Jawando.

MoCoShow High School Football Game of the Week: Churchill at Urbana (Preview/Prediction)

Urbana is 3-1. They played a very good Middletown team in Delaware and lost which wasn’t unexpected. They edged out a Middletown-MD team which is looking like the weakest Middletown team in years (admittedly the Knights have played admirably so far). They had a decent 28-0 win over TJ. Then last week they went into DC and outlasted Ballou in a 37-34 shootout. Based on their other results, Ballou looks like an average team in DC. It’s definitely been an interesting schedule for the Hawks, and one that’s tough to gauge based on final scores alone. We’ve been hunting for film but it’s been hard to come by; NFHS only has tape from the Middletown-DE and TJ games and we are much more interested in seeing how Urbana looked against the other two teams.

Urbana appears to be predominantly a rushing offense. The QB looks like a decent passer but can contribute to the ground game with his legs. This is good news for a Churchill defense coming off a pretty impressive performance against QO and Iverson Howard, which forced the Cougars to air it out more to score. Alas for Urbana, Keegan Johnson is gone. On the flip side, David Avit has not disappointed whatsoever in regards to his preseason hype, currently sitting at 4th on the state rushing yards leaderboard, tops in MoCo. Even against QO’s ferocious defense he clawed his way to 73 yards on the ground and made some big plays as a receiver too. Perhaps Middletown-DE has a comparable player or two, but it’s looking like he’ll be the best player the Hawks D will line up against at this point in the season. Overall, provided Churchill plays up to their potential, I see the ingredients shaking out for them to pull out a statement win. Prediction: Churchill by 21

Montgomery County Department of Permitting Services Removes Policy Barrier To Create Equity For Urban Agriculture And Increase Local Food Production

Per Montgomery County: The Montgomery County Department of Permitting Services (DPS) has removed permitting barriers to allow produce growers to build high tunnel-type greenhouses on urban and suburban properties, a benefit previously reserved for land designated as agricultural. High tunnels can be a key piece of farm infrastructure for vegetable growers to increase food production. Similar to a greenhouse, a high tunnel is a less permanent structure, built with a metal frame and plastic cover instead of glass and metal. High tunnels extend the growing season by trapping heat and protect crops from diseases and pests.

Urban agriculture is fundamental to achieving food systems resiliency in the County, increasing urban access to nutritious food and empowering urban residents. Previously, a building permit from the County was required for high tunnels on properties not agriculturally assessed for tax purposes. It is often difficult for properties with fewer than three acres to obtain the necessary agricultural assessment. This requirement had presented a barrier to new farmers and those with fewer means on urban and suburban properties.

Mambo Sauce is Coming to McDonald’s

Beginning October 9, McDonald’s is a adding Mambo Sauce to its menu for a limited time. Mambo sauce, also know as Mumbo sauce, is a sweet, sour, and spicy condiment that originated in Washington, DC carry-out restaurants and can be found across Montgomery County in restaurants like Kenny’s Sub Shop (Gaithersburg, Rockville, and Wheaton).

McDonald’s describes its Mambo sauce as a “tomato-based, sweet, spicy and vinegary sauce; inspired by the regional Washington, D.C. area sauce staple.” McDonald’s will also be adding a Sweet & Spicy Jam Sauce, a “jammy red pepper sauce with a tongue- numbing Szechuan peppercorn kick and extra heat from cayenne pepper; finished with apple cider vinegar,” that the company claims is the first-ever breakfast-inspired dipping sauce to hit US restaurants.

Attorney General Brown Joins 19 States in Opposing Indiana Anti-Transgender Law

Per the Maryland Attorney General’s Office (9.27.23): Maryland Attorney General Anthony G. Brown today joined a multistate coalition of 19 Attorneys General in filing an amicus brief opposing a state law in Indiana that severely blocks the ability of transgender youth to access critical, lifesaving gender-affirming care. The plaintiffs in K.C. v. Indiana are suing to block Indiana’s Senate Enacted Act (S.E.A.) 480, which prohibits healthcare professionals from providing gender-affirming care to transgender youth.

“Access to evidence-based, gender-affirming healthcare is critical to the health and well-being of transgender people,” said Attorney General Brown. “Youth, in particular, have better health outcomes when providers can address and treat gender dysphoria early, without interference from unlawful state bans on these life-saving health care services.”
