Montgomery County Office of Animal Services to Host Animal Welfare Presentation Wednesday, Sept. 27, with Author and Advocate Sara Pizano

Per Montgomery County: The Montgomery County Office of Animal Services will host a free animal welfare presentation from 7-8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 27, in the County Executive Office Building Auditorium in Rockville. Noted animal welfare advocate and author Sara Pizano, founder of Team Shelter USA, will talk about best practices for shelters.

Dr. Pizano is also affiliated with Maddie’s Million Pet Challenge, which fosters community-centered programs and outreach efforts to ensure optimal outcomes for every pet by offering consultations and mentoring services. The program will provide the County with a complimentary shelter consultation.

County Executive Elrich’s Next ‘Community Conversation’ to Seek Input on Fiscal Year 2025 Operating Budget Will Be Tuesday, Sept. 26, in Germantown

Per Montgomery County: Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich, along with the County’s regional services offices and community partners, is hosting a series of 10 “Community Conversations” from September through December to seek input on the Fiscal Year 2025 Operating Budget. The next conversation will be from 7-8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 26, at the BlackRock Center for the Arts in Germantown. The BlackRock Center for the Arts is located at 12901 Town Commons Drive in Germantown.

Seven of the 10 conversations will be conducted in English, including one focusing on issues for older residents and another focusing on issues of importance to Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) members. For a County first, one of the forums will be conducted in Amharic (Oct. 18). Two other non-English language forums were on the schedule. The Sept. 21 forum was conducted in Spanish and the Nov. 27 forum will be in Chinese. A select number of Community Conversations will be held online so that residents have the option to participate remotely.

Volunteers Sought for Nadim Khan Memorial Homeless Resource Day on Thursday, Oct. 19, in Gaithersburg

Per Montgomery County: Volunteers are needed for the Nadim Khan Memorial Homeless Resource Day to be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 19, at the Activity Center at the City of Gaithersburg’s Bohrer Park. The one-day fair provides Montgomery County residents who are homeless or at risk of homelessness with a one-stop opportunity to access a variety of resources and services focusing on health, employment, housing, legal, tax and veteran benefits.

Bohrer Park is located at 506 South Frederick Ave. in Gaithersburg. The event is co-sponsored by the County’s Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) and the City of Gaithersburg.

Montgomery County Inspector General Opening Two Investigation Into MCPS’ Handling of Misconduct Accusations

“Please accept this letter as notification that pursuant to $2-151 of the Montgomery County Code the Office of the Inspector General is opening two engagements related to allegations against Dr. Joel Beidleman and Montgomery County Public School’s (MCPS) handling of misconduct complaints. The first engagement is a review of MCPS’s process for receiving and responding to allegations of misconduct against school system employees. Through this review we will assess whether MCPS has effective procedures for the receipt, assignment, investigation, referral, resolution, documentation, and retention of allegations of misconduct by its employees. The second engagement is an investigation into all allegations of misconduct by Dr. Beidleman that have been received since July 2023 as well as any previous allegations that were not yet investigated.

In conducting these engagements, we will inspect relevant records, interview pertinent staff, and review applicable laws, regulations, policies, and procedures. Moving forward, my office will work directly with Dr. McKnight and her staff.”

Conceptual Findings from Ride On Reimagined Public Transportation Study Will Be Discussed at Virtual Meeting on Thursday, Sept. 28

Per Montgomery County: The Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) will hold a virtual open house at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 28, to present a first look at the Ride On Reimagined study and get community feedback on proposed concept changes to the County transit network. The ongoing Ride On Reimagined Study is a full-scale re-assessment of how the Montgomery County public transit network will operate. Montgomery County residents are encouraged to register and participate in the meeting.

The Ride On Reimagined Study has the goal of creating a future-focused public transportation system. The study, which began in February 2022, conducted a comprehensive assessment of the current Ride On and Metrobus network, ridership patterns and ongoing projects. To better address community needs, MCDOT sought extensive community feedback through ridership surveys, pop-up events and focus groups comprised of transit riders and non-riders.

Walter Johnson (3-0) at Paint Branch (2-1): WJ has taken big steps over the last 4 years and this is a great opportunity for the Wildcats to prove themselves and stake a claim for the top seed in the 4A North. Meanwhile PB will be looking for a statement win after falling short against Sherwood. Prediction: Paint Branch by 3

Blake (3-0) at Sherwood (3-0): Congratulations to the Bengals on starting 3-0 for the first time ever! It was a bit expected given the level of competition they’ve played so far, but also a testament to their growth under Coach Marshall. Sherwood will be a big step up for the Bengals, but this should be a good one – Blake tends to play the Warriors tough, and nearly pulled off the comeback upset last year, only to fall on a walk-off Hail Mary. However, Sherwood has exceeded expectations so far this year and based on their performances along with Blake’s not particularly impressive win over Einstein, think they show the Bengals that there’s still a ways to climb. Commission for Women Sponsoring Free Programs on ‘Financial Wellness’ and ‘Separation and Divorce: What Do I Need to Know?’

Per Montgomery County: The Montgomery County Commission for Women is sponsoring two free programs that can help residents get themselves better organized. A series of “Financial Health and Wellness Seminars” will begin on Tuesday, Oct. 10. Seminars on “Separation and Divorce: What Do I Need to Know?” will begin on Wednesday, Oct. 4. The virtual financial seminars will cover many aspects of becoming more financially organized.

The Commission for Women is joining with Montgomery County Public Libraries to offer the seminars, which will be led by Jamie Lapin, a private wealth advisor and president of RMG Advisors, LLC, and Thiago Glieger, a private wealth advisor and Federal retirement specialist.

Per Montgomery County: Montgomery County Government has nearly 1,000 full-time and part-time jobs, currently open for employment. Interested job seekers 18‐and‐over are encouraged to attend the Montgomery County Career Fair and Hiring Expo from 3-7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 3, at the Silver Spring Civic Building at Veterans Plaza in Downtown Silver Spring.The Silver Spring Civic Building is located at 1 Veterans Place in Silver Spring.
