Montgomery County Alcohol Beverage Services Receives National Top Honor for Overall Best Practices from StateWays Magazine

The Best Practices Awards program was launched in 2015 to recognize control state agencies that are leading the industry in innovation, education and enforcement. Any beverage control agency from the U.S. and Canada is eligible to enter the awards, which are presented in eight categories with one standout selected as the overall winner and serving as a model for other agencies to follow.

“ABS has acted nimbly and has remained steadfast in its commitment to customer service, even as it has faced rapidly changing conditions over the past couple of years,” said County Executive Marc Elrich. “I congratulate ABS and our hard-working employees on this well-deserved award.”

Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich to Participate in Prescription Drug Affordability Forum Happening Tuesday Oct. 4

Since September, the Maryland Health Care for All! Coalition and AARP Maryland have been behind a series of community forums across the state. Members of Maryland Prescription Drug Affordability Board have presented their work to the public at these community gatherings. The forums have also focused on public education, receiving input from consumers and elevating patient stories.

“We are excited to hear about the proposals and recommendations that will save Marylanders money at the drug store,” said County Executive Marc Elrich. “When we started this push to convince state lawmakers to establish the Prescription Drug Affordability Board in 2019 we were desperate for ways to bring down prescription drug costs. Very little has changed in the market since then so we anticipate these measures, when adopted by lawmakers, will have a massive impact in the lives of Marylanders.”

Alex Tsironis, founder of The MoCoShow and MCPS Teacher for the last 16 years, will be celebrated by the Conflict Resolution Center of Montgomery County (CRCMC) at the 2022 Peace Maker Gala as ‘Peacemaker of The Year.’ The Gala and golf tournament will take place at Top Golf, Germantown on Monday, October 10th at 4:00 PM (EDT). Tickets for the Gala and Top Golf tournament are available here.

“We are happy to be holding this year’s annual Peacemaker Gala Celebration at the Top Golf of Germantown! Every year we honor the Peacemaker of the Year, the Volunteer of the Year, and the Executive Director’s Awardee during our largest fundraising event! Update: Montgomery County Police announced at 9:28am that barricade situation on Castle Boulevard has been safely resolved. The adult male is in custody and the shelter in place has been lifted.

Montgomery County Police (5:46am): MCPD is asking for residents in the 14000 block of Castle Boulevard and all of Castle Ridge Cir. to shelter in place.

Rockville Police Respond to Report of Attempted Carjacking; Two in Custody

On 10/3/22 at 11:55 a.m. Rockville City Police responded to the area of E. Middle Lane and Helen Heneghan Way for the report of an attempted carjacking.

Officers met with witnesses who stated they heard a woman screaming and observed three males assaulting a female in the parking garage in the 300 block of Hungerford Drive. The witness attempted to intervene when one of the subjects pointed a handgun and fled on foot. The female victim advised officers that while parking her vehicle, the three men approached her, demanded her keys, and when she refused, they physically assaulted her.

Governor Hogan Announces New Application Round for Opportunity Zone Microgrants

Governor Larry Hogan has announced that the next round of Opportunity Zone microgrant funding will open on October 4. The grants will allow eligible small businesses seeking to expand within designated Opportunity Zones (distressed communities) to apply for microgrants ranging from $50,000 to $100,000. Below is a map of “Opportunity Zones” in Montgomery County, courtesy of www.Maryland.gov

Maryland has 149 designated Opportunity Zones, and each of Maryland’s 24 jurisdictions has at least one designation. The first two rounds of Opportunity Zone microgrant funding have invested $1 million in 20 businesses across the state.

Montgomery County Council Meets on Oct. 4 for Deliberations on Thrive Montgomery 2050

The Montgomery County Council will meet on Tuesday, Oct. 4 at 9 a.m. The meeting will begin with two proclamation presentations. The first, presented by Councilmember Craig Rice, will recognize Bullying Prevention Awareness Month. The second, presented by Councilmembers Rice and Sidney Katz, will recognize Constitution Month.

The afternoon session will begin at 1 p.m. with two proclamation presentations. The first, presented by Council President Gabe Albornoz and the County Executive, will recognize Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The second, presented by Councilmember Will Jawando, will recognize National Health Week.

Family Justice Center Foundation Is Hosting a 13K Unique Run/Walk to Help End Domestic Violence Oct. 1-23

This 13K race recognizes the foundation’s 13 years raising awareness and funds in support of the work of the Rockville-based Family Justice Center and victims of domestic violence.

Participants can cover their 13k in any manner and at any time. They can run or walk individually or with others to support the event. Many entrants join as teams. The fee to enter is $35 per person, plus a $3.10 signup fee.

Applications for Abortion Access Grants Program Due By 9 a.m. on Monday, Oct.10.

The County’s Department of Health and Human Services and the Office of Grants Management are seeking applications from qualified Community Based Organizations (CBOs) providing direct services that support the right to access abortion care in the County. Applications are due by 9 a.m. on Monday, Oct.10.

Resolution 19-1357 provides a total of $1 million for the County’s FY 2023 Abortion, Reproductive Health, and Related Services Access (ARHRSA) Grants Program with individual awards ranging from a minimum award of $50,000 and a maximum award of $500,000 for an up to one year (12 month) performance period. The target population for this grant are women seeking access to abortion, reproductive health, and related services as well as the staff providing these services.
