Undergraduate Expo at The Universities at Shady Grove

If you’ve ever shopped at Traville Village, Travilah Square, or Fallsgrove Village Center in Rockville, you’ve been within walking distance of a campus with over 60 undergrad and grad degree programs but like me, probably had no idea it even existed.

Basically how it works is that students find the university offering their chosen major at USG and apply directly there. On the application, they can choose Shady Grove as their preferred campus location, but they still get the same professors, take the same classes, and earn the same diploma as they would if they went to that school’s main campus.

Governor Hogan Vetoes Bills On School Start Date and $15 Minimum Wage

Since the General Assembly passed the bills by veto-proof margins, it is expected that a vote will take place in the coming days to override the governor’s veto.

In 2016, Hogan’s executive order mandated that all Maryland public schools must start after after Labor Day and end by June 15th. If the override occurs, the new bill would allow school districts to start prior to Labor Day, as MCPS has done in recent years prior to the executive order.

Shoppers to Close/Sell Off All Locations

There are MoCo locations in Germantown, Kensington, Takoma Park, and Wheaton (Glenmont).

The article mentions that locations are not expected to close suddenly, but that the company is “aggressively looking to sell locations.”

There’s still no news on which locations will be bought out by other grocery stores, but once there is we will be sure to have updates.

Sen. Will Smith (MoCo) Sponsors Bill That Gives MD Residents A Third Option For Gender on Driver’s License/ID Card

​Yesterday The Baltimore Sun reported that the bill will be moving forward in the Maryland General Assembly.

Sen. Will Smith is quoted as saying “This is a way that we can recognize that segment of the population so they can feel like they can move throughout society with a little bit of ease.”

Two MoCo Areas Listed in Bloomberg’s “2019 Richest Places” List

Travilah (an area without a designated zip code whose residents generally identify as living in Potomac, Rockville, Darnestown, or North Potomac) came in 24th, up one spot from their 2018 ranking. Their average household income is $284,682.

Potomac came in 50th, down 4 spots from their 2018 ranking. The house average household income there is $248,189.

Maryland Delegate, David Moon, Introduces Bill to Decriminilize Attempted Suicide

​Per Moon:
“Our state should treat suicide as a mental health issue instead of a criminal justice issue– but last year prosecutors secured a guilty plea against an Eastern Shore resident who threatened to kill himself.
​
They claimed they subjected him to possible jail time & a criminal record, because they wanted him to get help. Nevermind that we have numerous other tools to push our residents into mental health treatment.

Notably, Maryland never passed a law to criminalize attempted suicide. Prosecutors, however, can charge this crime because we are a state that recognizes English common law. Back in the day, the penalty used to be a roadside burial and the government seizing your assets. Even though England decriminalized attempted suicide in 1961, this antiquated practice lives on in Maryland. HB 77 would repeal the common law crime of attempted suicide in our state, and it’s long past due.”
