Montgomery Parks announces its annual deer population management program to occur from September 2022 into March 2023. Two locations (three total park units) are being added this year for a total of 63 parks where archery and/or firearms-managed deer hunting, or Park Police-based sharpshooting operations, will take place. These 63 parks comprise nearly 60 percent of M-NCPPC Montgomery Parks’ total land area.

Montgomery Parks, part of The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, is increasing pollinators and native wildlife in its parks. Through its Meadow Management and Restoration Program, the department is seeing a resurgence of many new pollinator-friendly plants. At Rachel Carson Conservation Park, parks staff restored eight acres of a meadow over the past two years and plans to restore 12 more acres by the summer of next year.

Senior Natural Resources Specialist Dianna Loescher oversees Montgomery Parks’ Meadow Management and Restoration Program.  “The goal of the restoration program is to increase native biodiversity to better support pollinators and native wildlife,” Loescher said. “With this unique program, we are boosting the health and resiliency of our native ecosystems through planting efforts.”

Montgomery Parks(opens in a new tab) invites the public to provide input for the first phase of a new, one-acre park in downtown Silver Spring. South Silver Spring Park(opens in a new tab), located at 1110 East-West Highway (the former site of National Tire and Battery) will provide multiple spaces for active recreation, play, and socializing. The park’s first phase is expected to open in 2023.

Montgomery Parks purchased the site of the park at the end of 2021 with the goal of demolishing the existing building and developing the first phase of the park. To provide input on the park’s proposed amenities, please go to the Open Town Hall survey(opens in a new tab).

In one of the most interesting stories of the week, Montgomery County Park Police asked a man to leave before the man could play music through his very impressive sound system at Sligo-Dennis Local Park in Silver Spring on Tuesday evening. According to Park Rules & Regulations, Chapter IV: Prohibited Activities and Conduct; Section 12: Amplified Sound and Noise: “No person shall operate any device to amplify sound or otherwise create excessive noise so as to disturb the peace and public enjoyment…”, but a lot of people were still left wondering what it could have sounded like.

New program provided opportunities for teenagers to help build and maintain natural surface trails across Montgomery County.

Montgomery Parks is aiming to increase diversity in the mountain biking community with a recently launched Trail Ambassador Program. A group of nine teenagers graduated from the program on July 5, 2022, after spending two weeks helping build and maintain natural surface trails in parks around Montgomery County. In exchange for their hard work, participants received a mountain bike, helmet, bike lock, and certificate. The mountain bikes, a big incentive for participants, were made possible through funding from the Montgomery Parks Foundation.
