The Montgomery County Council unanimously voted to reappoint Shawn Bartley to the Montgomery County Planning Board at its May 21 meeting. Bartley, who was first appointed in March 2023 to complete the unexpired term of Commissioner Gerald Cichy, will now serve a second four-year term on the Planning Board and as a M-NCPPC Commissioner.
It has been nearly 10 years since Walmart officially abandoned its plans to open a store in Aspen Hill. The retail giant was intending to build a 118,000-square-foot store with expanded grocery offerings on the site of the vacant BAE/Vitro office building at 4115 Aspen Hill Road, touting the creation of nearly 300 jobs. The nearly 10-acre Aspen Hill property included a 262,000-square-foot office building that was vacant since 2010. In 2019 it was purchased by Kaiser for a future Medical Center that was originally planned to open in 2022. The pandemic halted those plans, and we are still awaiting the next move by Kaiser.
The Montgomery County Council has authorized the Montgomery County Planning Department to develop a Minor Master Plan Amendment (MMPA) for the 2017 Bethesda Downtown Plan that will focus on implementation, specifically as it relates to the cap of the Bethesda Overlay Zone (BOZ).
Montgomery Parks and the Montgomery Parks Foundation are celebrating the opening of the SEED Classroom, an innovative learning space, on Saturday, May 18, 2024. SEED is an acronym for Sustainable Education Every Day. The new classroom at Black Hill Regional Park (20930 Lake Ridge Dr., Boyds, MD) will increase the educational opportunities available at the park.

The Montgomery County Planning Department will hold in-person, collaborative visioning workshops for community members to provide the department with ideas and input for the future of Clarksburg between I-270 and MD 355 and between Little Seneca Creek and Clarksburg Road. Plan focusing on the county’s life sciences industry hub in the heart of the I-270 corridor heads to County Council for review.
The Montgomery County Planning Board unanimously approved the Great Seneca Plan: Connecting Life and Science at its April 25 meeting. The plan was developed by the Montgomery County Planning Department and focuses on strengthening the economic competitiveness of the Life Sciences Center, a thriving hub that is host to a diverse population and premier life sciences, medical, and educational institutions and organizations along the I-270 corridor.

Representatives from Montgomery County will deliver an update on the Seven Locks Justice Complex during the Monday, April 29 meeting of Rockville’s Mayor and Council. The complex is proposed for the 25.8-acres county-owned detention facility site at 1451 Seven Locks Road.
