Good Earth Sandy Spring to Close After 43 Years

Good Earth Garden Market at 1610 Olney-Sandy Spring Road in Sandy Spring has announced it will be closing on Wednesday, December 21. Good Earth’s Potomac location at 11650 Falls Road will remain open. In an email sent to customers, owner David Johannes said that all full-time employees at the Sandy Spring location have been offered positions at the Potomac store and that the first 30 people who stop in to say good bye on Wednesday will get a free 4″ poinsettia.

“It is with a sad heart that we announce Good Earth Sandy Spring is closing for good. It is the end of an era that has spanned 43 wonderful years. Good Earth was originally founded in 1979 and has served the Olney/Sandy Spring Market since then. We’ve moved a few times, but through thick and thin our customers, you, have followed and been loyal. We could not have stayed around for 43 years without you. Thank you.

‘Shops at Travilah’ Will Consist of 5,681 SF Retail Establishment and 12,927 SF Daycare Center, If Approved

On December 1, 2022, the site plan for ‘Shops at Travilah’ will be reviewed by the Montgomery County Planning Board. Planning Board staff recommends “approval with conditions” heading into the meeting. The Application proposes to construct a 5,681 SF retail/service establishment and 12,927 SF daycare center (over 30 persons).

Per Montgomery Planning: The application is for the construction of two buildings off of Travilah Rd near the intersection of Travilah Rd and Piney Meetinghouse Rd. Building A is a 5,681 square-foot building with approximately four units/bays to be erected on the northern half of the Property and contains a mix of neighborhood serving retail uses and/or a restaurant. Building B is a 12,927 square foot day care building to be located on the southern half of the Subject Property. Approximately 10,318 square feet of outdoor amenity space is provided on site, including an outdoor seating area abutting the retail/restaurant building on three sides and pedestrian connection throughout the site that connect the daycare, and retail buildings to the proposed sidewalk on Travilah Road. Approximately 9,468 square feet of outdoor space behind the daycare will be fenced to provide a safe, enclosed playground/recreation area.

Vehicle Driven into Building at Potomac Woods Plaza

A vehicle was driven into the Walgreens at 1075 Seven Locks Rd in Potomac Woods Plaza on Friday, October 28, around 11am. According to Chief Spokesperson for Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services Pete Piringer, EMS is currently evaluating one adult (driver) and no patrons were injured. Everyone has had their share of terrible experiences in MoCo parking lots, and while there are more than 26 “bad” parking lots, we’ve narrowed down a list (in no particular order) of what we feel are the worst.

40th Annual Potomac Day Parade and Celebration Will Take Place October 22

The 40th annual Potomac Day parade and celebration will begin with the parade at 10:30am in Potomac Village. The following roadways will be affected from approximately 8am-5pm, per Montgomery County:

We are told there will be than 30 entrants in the parade, including horses from the Potomac Bridle and Hiking Trails Association and the Park Police. After the parade, the Children’s Fair with rides and games will be underway, along with the Business Fair with 68 Business fair participants. Questions about the event should be directed to the Potomac Chamber of Commerce

Chopt is Coming to Cabin John Village

Chopt is opening a new location in Cabin John Village (Potomac), in the space next to Boulangerie Christophe, according to the Edens website. We stopped by this morning and there is plenty left to go, so we expect an early to mid 2023 opening for the salad chain. This will be Montgomery County’s fifth Chopt restaurant, with locations currently open in Gaithersburg, Rockville, and two in Bethesda.

Chopt joins a bevy of restaurants and retailers that have recently opened or are coming soon to Cabin John Village. Recently Open: The Pretzel Bakery opened in April. Authentic French bakery, Boulangerie Christophe, opened in May. Stretch Zone opened in July. The Scoop ice cream shop opened in August. Cabin John Village, formerly known as the Cabin John shopping center and mall, is named for the adjacent creek and regional park. It has been a pillar of the Potomac community since 1967 and was acquired by EDENS in 2016. Per EDENS: “EDENS has transformed the traditional shopping center experience into a welcoming communal environment that naturally fosters meaningful social interaction. Complementary retail options include a curated mix of home goods, dining, health and wellness and more outdoor greenspace welcomes the opportunity for community events.”

Mark Wahlberg-Backed F45 Training to Open Potomac Location

F45 Training, an Australian franchisor and operator of fitness centers based in Austin, Texas, will be opening a new Montgomery County location in Potomac, joining Germantown and Olney as upcoming locations, with current locations exist in Bethesda and Silver Spring (Google has listed Bethesda as “temporarily closed” for two years).

The fitness center will open at 1087 Seven Locks Rd in Potomac Woods Plaza, taking over the location that was previously home to BB&T bank. The space is currently being renovated and there’s not an opening date currently available.

Community Letter From Winston Churchill Principal on Tragic Passing of Rising 11th Grade Student

Winston Churchill High School principal, John Taylor, sent a letter to the Churchill community on Tuesday informing them of the tragic passing of an 11th grade student at the school. The full letter can be seen below:

It is true that the death of anyone close to us, especially a young person, can be emotionally challenging. Our deepest sympathies and thoughts are with the student’s family and friends during this difficult time. You may be concerned about the reaction of your child to this news of the loss of a classmate. Apna Pizza, An Indian Style Pizza Restaurant, To Open This Week in the Travilah Area

Update 6/20: Apna Pizza has announced that due to an electrical issue the restaurant will not be opening this week. New opening date to be determined.

Back in March we let you know that Apna Pizza is coming to 14050 Travilah Rd in Rockville (Travilah area), the former site of Pizza Palace. The new pizzeria has wrapped up construction and a countdown on the restaurant website says that the restaurant will open later this week

Detectives Investigate Residential Burglary in Potomac; Surveillance Video of Suspect Released

The suspect is described as a male, wearing a white t-shirt, cargo shorts and a baseball cap. Anyone with information regarding this suspect or this crime is asked to call the 1st District Investigative Section at 240-773-6084 or 240-773-TIPS, or contact Crime Solvers of Montgomery County toll-free at 1-866-411-TIPS(8477). A reward of up to $10,000 is being offered for information that leads to the arrest of the suspect. Callers can remain anonymous.
