Rocktobierfest Returns to Rockville Town Square This Saturday, September 30

Rocktobierfest returns to Rockville Town Center on Saturday, Sept. 30 for a day of bands, beers and being together. The fifth edition of the free festival, from 11 a.m.-5 p.m., will include two stages of live music, food, beer sales by local breweries, and an artisan shopping area.

Bavarian and rock musical acts will take the stage, including Mike Surratt and the Continentals, Under the Covers, Capital Effect, Chesapeake Sons, Alt Washingtonia and Rockville German Band. Featured beverage vendors will include 7 Locks Brewing, Crooked Crab Brewing Company, Dawson’s Market, Denizens Brewing Co., Landmade Brewing, Lone Oak Farm Brewing Co., Saints Row Brewing, Silver Branch Brewing Company, Twin Valley Distillers, Waredaca Brewing Company and World of Beer.

Southlawn Lane in Rockville Closed Due to Downed Wires

Montgomery County Police tweeted the following at 2:15pm on Tuesday, September 26: “TRAFFIC ADVISORY: Downed wires have the 15100 block of Southlawn Lane closed. Drivers are advised to seek an alternate route. Expect significant delays.” We will provide an update if additional information becomes available.

Torchy’s Tacos is Coming to Federal Plaza

Torchy’s Tacos is coming to 12266 Rockville Pike in Federal Plaza, taking over part of the space that was recently home to Chuy’s and previously home to Ruby Tuesday (photos below). Kura Revolving Sushi Bar will be taking over the other part of the space.

Torchy’s Tacos, featuring “the most unique tacos, coveted queso and refreshing margaritas in the game, and the rotating Taco of the Month,” will open its first location in the DMV in 2024. The 3,961 square-foot restaurant will be located at 12266 Rockville Pike. With more than 115 locations across 14 states, Torchy’s Tacos serves tacos, sides, and drinks from scratch, made-to-order.

Kura Revolving Sushi Bar is the “ultimate eater-tainment” dining experience serving up authentic Japanese cuisine through an engaging conveyor belt system packed with prizes, drink delivery robots and more. The dining experience features a revolving sushi bar that snakes through the dining area with a wide variety of sushi plates for patrons to select from as they circulate and an express belt positioned above the main belt that delivers orders tableside placed via the ordering tablet from the 140+ menu inclusive of sushi, udon, ramen, hot and cold sides, and desserts. Guests can also look forward to receiving fun prizes for every 15 sushi plates and soft beverages delivered by Kur-B the KuraBot.

Montgomery County Woman to Star as Contestant on ABC’s “Golden Bachelor”

ABC’s new Bachelor spinoff, “Golden Bachelor”, stars 72-year-old Gerry Turner– a retired restauranteur and widower from Indiana, who is looking for love on the new series that premieres on September 28, 2023. The show’s tagline is “it’s never too late to fall in love…again”, which refers to the contestants’ ages of 60 years young and up. One contestant vying for Gerry’s attention is Joan– a “private school administrator” from Rockville, Maryland. More on Joan, per “Golden Bachelor” below:

Montgomery College Students Win Four of Five U.S. EPA “Make a Market Tech Challenge” Awards

Per Montgomery College: The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has announced five winners of the Make a Market Tech Challenge. The five student teams received a total of $15,000 for their innovative market assessments for new technologies developed by EPA researchers. Four of the five winners are Montgomery College students. The 2023 winners of the Make a Market Tech Challenge: Esther Soon, first place ($6,000); Rasheevan Nair, second place ($3,000); and third place was shared by two MC students: Miguel Granados and Sena Hordoffa ($1,500 each).

When EPA researchers invent new technologies, EPA’s Federal Technology Transfer Act program assists with patenting these new technologies and finding companies that are interested in licensing EPA’s products to put federally funded technology to use in real-word applications. EPA launched the Make a Market Tech Challenge to solicit innovative strategies for market assessments of patented and unlicensed EPA-developed technologies.

$50,000 and $20,000 Winning Lottery Tickets Sold Last Week in Montgomery County Remain Unclaimed; Tonight’s Powerball Reaches $785 Million

According to the Maryland Lottery, winning lottery tickets sold last week in Montgomery County worth $20,000 and $50,000 remain unclaimed as of Monday, September 25. The $50,000 winning Bonus Match 5 ticket was sold at the Citgo located at 8333 Fenton St in Silver Spring and the $20,000 winning Mega Millions ticket was sold at Ollie’s Beer, Wine and Deli located at 2011 Veirs Mill Rd in Rockville. Lottery winners have 182 days from the date of a drawing to claim their prizes.

The Powerball drawing scheduled to take place tonight has an estimated jackpot of $785 million, with an estimated cash option of $367 million. Powerball drawings take place every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday at 10:59 p.m. The odds of winning the Powerball jackpot are 1 in 292.2 million. The odds of winning a prize are 1 in 24.9.

10. Silver Diner (12276 Rockville Pike, Rockville): With a 4 out of 5 rating after 639 reviews, Silver Diner comes in #10 overall in the county and #2 in Rockville. The restaurant has an additional MoCo location at Gaithersburg’s Rio.

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) responded to Georgia Avenue, near International Drive, for the report of a vehicle fire on Sunday, September 24, around 11am. Chief Spokesperson for MCFRS Pete Piring reports that northbound Georgia Avenue is blocked off at Rossmoor Drive, near Leisure World. Drivers should expect delays. Montgomery County Office of Animal Services to Host Animal Welfare Presentation Wednesday, Sept. 27, with Author and Advocate Sara Pizano

Per Montgomery County: The Montgomery County Office of Animal Services will host a free animal welfare presentation from 7-8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 27, in the County Executive Office Building Auditorium in Rockville. Noted animal welfare advocate and author Sara Pizano, founder of Team Shelter USA, will talk about best practices for shelters.

Dr. Pizano is also affiliated with Maddie’s Million Pet Challenge, which fosters community-centered programs and outreach efforts to ensure optimal outcomes for every pet by offering consultations and mentoring services. The program will provide the County with a complimentary shelter consultation.
