Empress Coffee & Cocktails is now open at 325 Main Street in Gaithersburg. The new coffee shop has taken over the space that was most recently home to Brew House Kentlands, which closed after being open for a little over a year. The space was also the previous home of Clear Skies Meadery, which opened its new meadery at 15201 Display Ct in Rockville.
Earlier this year we let you know that First Watch signed on to open a new location in the upcoming White Oak Town Center development (12345 Columbia Pike). It will be taking over a corner space with a large outdoor patio, across from the future grocery store anchor that remains to be determined (but appears to be Amazon Fresh again).

In December we let you know that Nash & Smash, a restaurant that serves Nashville hot chicken sandwiches, fried chicken, smash burgers, and more, is coming soon to MoCo. Construction began this spring and now permanent signage is up at the restaurant, according to a photo sent in to us by My Dad’s Chips (who was making a delivery at nearby Santucci’s Deli).
MCPS is hosting its annual Back-to-School Fair on Saturday, Aug. 24 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Westfield Wheaton mall, located at 11160 Veirs Mill Road.
On Sunday we reported that Tara Thai will be permanently closing its Rockville location at 12071 Rockville Pike in Montrose Crossing at the end of the month, according to a representative from the restaurant. Since then, the restaurant has put a sign up stating that it will be closed for renovations and reopening soon “with a fresh new look and enhanced services.” A representative clarified that a new restaurant, under new ownership and management, will be taking its place.
Perkins Restaurant & Bakery, a national brand of restaurants, is rebranding. The only Maryland location is in Garrett County’s McHenry, but did you know that there used to be a Perkins in Gaithersburg?
The Washington Post’s Tom Sietsema has been the newspaper’s food critic for nearly 25 years. In his latest dining guide, highlighting “5 great affordable restaurants in the D.C. area”, he includes two Maryland restaurants– both located in Montgomery County.
Lil’ Sumthin’ Sweet is coming to 8563 Fenton St, the former home of Smoothie King which closed permanently a couple years back.
Update: Little Miner Taco at 39 Maryland Ave Ste A in Rockville Town Square has announced a delay in its opening due to permitting issues. The opening was previously scheduled for Thursday, July 18, 2024.
