Each month popular food website, Eater, answers the question “Where should I eat right now?” In their October 2023 edition, Eater DC has included just Montgomery County restaurant in its list of buzzworthy restaurants that have been open for less than six months. For the second month in a row, The Farmhouse Bistro at the Crossvines (16601 W Willard Rd, Poolesville, MD) has made the list.

Our very own Mr. MoCo stated, “Farmhouse Bistro has quickly become one of my favorite places to eat in MoCo. The burger was one of the best I’ve ever eaten (that’s bacon and onion jam on it), and the fish and chips were the best I’ve ever had. This is one of the few places where everything was good so anything you see, I recommend.” A reel of his visit can be seen below.

Chef Mitsuhisa Nishio, or “Michu” to his family members and friends and Chef Ninja to many of his followers across social media, is opening Zuma By Chef Ninja in the space that was previously home to Brickside at 4866 Cordell Ave in Bethesda. The restaurant opened on October 6th and has been sharing posts on social media of dishes being enjoyed by various diners.

About “Michu”/Chef NinjaMitsuhisa Nishio, better known to the public as “El Ninja”, is a world-renowned chef who specializes in Asian-Latin fusion cuisine. Despite being of full Japanese descent, Chef Ninja was born and raised in Constanza – a lovely town in the Dominican Republic. There is no doubt that Ninja takes pride in both of his co-cultures. This sense of pride is displayed through his art where he fuses traditional Japanese foods with the savory, full of taste ingredients of Dominican cuisine. Although the food of said cultures are so different, Chef Ninja has found a way to perfectly bridge the gap between his two nationalities through his eccentric dishes. What’s more Japanese-Dominican than a sushi roll with sweet plantains placed on top?

According to the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office, “in the Circuit Court for Montgomery County, MD, before the Honorable Sharon Burrell, a jury has convicted defendant, Kevin Orihuela, 22, of Rockville, on charges of Homicide by Motor Vehicle while Under the Influence of Alcohol and Gross Negligent Manslaughter by Motor Vehicle for causing the crash that killed 62-year-old Noel Powell of Germantown. The jury reached its verdict late yesterday afternoon, October 5th, 2023. Orihuela faces up to 15 years in prison. A sentencing hearing is scheduled for December 15th, 2023.

The fatal crash occurred on Sunday, August 14th, 2022, at Josiah Henson Pkwy and Randolph Rd, at the intersection of Josiah Henson with the exit ramp from route 355 at approximately 4:12 p.m.  The defendant, Orihuela, had gone to brunch at a restaurant in the Pike and Rose center with a large group of friends to celebrate one of their 21st birthdays, where they ordered “bottomless mimosas.”  Based on a review of surveillance video, the defendant drank 11 mimosas over the course of one hour and 55 minutes (1:06 pm to 3:01 pm).  The video depicts the defendant consistently sitting with his head on the table and head in his hands in the minutes before he leaves.  He then got into his Audi A4, left Pike and Rose via the Towne Road exit, turned right onto Josiah Henson, and quickly accelerated his Audi toward the intersection with the ramp from route 355.  The event data recorder from his vehicle showed that as he approached that intersection, he was accelerating at one hundred percent of his vehicle’s capability and reached a speed of 70 miles per hour.  The speed limit on that road is 40 mph.

Access to the outdoor dining area/pier will be via two gangways attached to the existing boardwalk. The new structure projects 10’-2” from the boardwalk and will be 12 feet tall from the finished floor. Gaithersburg Planning Staff supports the proposal for a dining pier in the Rio Washingtonian Lake, finding it in compliance with the approved sketch plan and Schematic Development Plan SDP- 9462-2023. “The dining pier will provide additional outdoor seating for Copper Canyon and will enhance the use of lake. There remains adequate parking for the proposed commercial addition and all applicable development standards have been met.” No timeframe for the pier has been announced.
