Las month we let you know the 2022 Taiwan Bubble Tea Festival will take place on September 24th from 11am until 4pm at Rockville Town Square. The event is being held by Taiwan Sister Cities, an organization “dedicated to promoting, educating, and fostering intercultural understanding and cooperation among the people of the United States and the people of Taiwan.”
Participating in the festival will be Tiger Sugar Rockville, which recently reopened after a car crashed through their storefront. Bun’d Up, which has a Pike & Rose location nearby. Mr. Wish, which opened last year in Rockville. Bao Bei, which started operating out of a kitchen in Rockville recently. Doki Toki, which recently opened in Downtown Crown, and a lot more.
Two more food tenants have been announced for Commas, a new 13,000 square foot food hall coming to the third level of Ellsworth Place (8661 Colesville Rd) in Downtown Silver Spring. Tokoa, which focuses on cheesesteaks and burgers, and J&J Mex-Taqueria, a family owned restaurant which currently has a location at 6231 Georgia Ave NW, DC.
Tokoa was created after friends and long-time restaurant workers Evelyn Cruz and Delmy Hernandez “decided to combine their knowledge and experience to create their version of their favorite foods.” The menu focuses on cheesesteaks and burgers, both classic and innovative, from the traditional Philly Cheesesteak to a spicy cheesesteak to cheese-stuffed burgers.
Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services responded to a vehicle fire inside of a parking garage at Westfield Wheaton Mall on Thursday morning. According to Chief Spokesperson for MCFRS Pete Piringer, the fire was located on the lower/ground level of a garage near JCPenney’s and Dick’s Sporting Goods. The vehicle was ‘well-involved’ when firefighters arrived and the fire has been extinguished.
The vehicle was unoccupied at the time and there were no injuries. Piringer noted that there were no fire sprinklers in the parking garage. Some roads in the area were blocked and drivers should expect residual delays. Back in April, we let you know that Macondo Food Express would be coming to Gaithersburg. The restaurant has opened at 811 Russell Ave in Gaithersburg. The Colombian restaurant has taken the space that was formerly home to Perroloco (also Colombian), which closed in the spring of 2020.
The menu offers items such as empanadas, pastel de yuca, a variety of arepas, twice-fried smashed green plantains, meat skewers, many different types of perros calientes (hotdogs), burgers, and a lot more. The restaurant is currently offering 10% off of your first order if you order online.
The Breakfast Club plans to open at the end of October at 8240 Fenton Street in Downtown Silver Spring, according to a report by Source of the Spring. The restaurant, which will feature breakfast all day, but will also have lunch and dinner menu items, is inspired by “Papa Sherman” who is owner Jason Miskiri’s father.
The Breakfast Club’s menu will include omelets, French toast stuffed with cream cheese and strawberries, and pancakes, according to a previous report by Bethesda Beat “Additionally, there will be heavier entrees, such as lamb chops, chicken and waffles, and shrimp and grits.”
dd’s Discount is coming to 18236 Contour Rd in the Montgomery Village Plaza shopping center, according to mfi Realty. The store will be located in the former space of Marshall’s, which relocated to Gaithersburg Square last year. dd’s is owned and operated by Ross Stores, Inc and items for sale at its locations are similar to those found in other discount retailers. This will be the first dd’s location in Montgomery County. No opening date has been announced.

Anh-mazing Viet Kitchen located inside The Block Food Hall (967 Rose Ave, North Bethesda) at Pike & Rose has announced it will be permanently closing by September 30. The restaurant is known for its short rib pho and selection of banh mi sandwiches. Anh-mazing’s location at 12250 Clarksville Pike in Clarksville will remain open.
Three Thai restaurants located in Montgomery County have made Eater DC’s ‘15 Standout Thai Restaurants Around D.C.’ list. Per the article, “While suburban neighborhoods like Falls Church and Wheaton have a particularly strong selection of top-tier Thai restaurants, D.C. proper has its own strong scene.” With Montgomery County being home to over 30 Thai restaurants, many have previously shared their opinions via the @TasteMoCo food tournaments of 2020. Thai Chef (29 Maryland Ave, #308, Rockville): “Inspired by bustling night markets in Bangkok, this aquamarine-soaked Dupont mainstay that expanded to Rockville Town Square last year comes from Bangkok native Pornnapa Pongpornprot and her eldest daughter, Chalisa Fitts. The eye-popping restaurant is covered with ornate metal sculptures, merry-go-round horses circling a soaring interior atrium, and neon-lit catch phrases. Best sellers on the menu include its Crying Tiger steak entree, “after-school” wontons, spicy drunken noodles dubbed “D.U.I.” and a new fried rice section. Both locations are open for dine-in and takeout.”
Earlier this month we let you know that Flip’d by IHOP will be opening on Tuesday, September 20. The company has announced that the first 100 guests in line, when the store opens at 6am, will receive a free ‘Original Pancake Bowl’. This will be the third Flip’d location in the country (located at the old Asian Bistro Cafe spot at 8537 Georgia Avenue in Downtown Silver Spring) between Panera and Red Lobster).

Earlier this month we let you know that Fryer’s Roadside, described as “a traditional walk-up window Chicken Shack/Ice Cream Stand”, was available for sale for an asking price of $150,000. The restaurant has been sold to Chef Ed Reavis and Jennifer Meltzer, owners of All Set Restaurant and Money Muscle BBQ, according to a report by Source of the Spring (statement available below). Details of the sale are currently unavailable.
