Apna Pizza at 14050 Travilah Rd in Rockville (Travilah area), the former site of Pizza Palace, has announced that due to an electrical issue the restaurant’s opening has been delayed. The new pizzeria recently wrapped up construction and a countdown on the restaurant website said that the restaurant would be opening later this week.  The new opening date is now to be determined.

Apna will serve Indian style pizza, and say they will be the first in the area to offer that style. The menu will include items such as tandoori chicken pizza, butter chicken fusion pizza, masala paneer pizza, impossible korma pizza (vegetarian) or a build your own with toppings of your choice and Indian flavor and spices. In addition to pizza, they will serve sides of loaded fries, which they described as “poutine but with an edge”, and wings.

The grand opening for Roaming Rooster at 11586 Old Georgetown Road in North Bethesda takes place on Tuesday, June 21 at 11am. As part of the grand opening festivities, the first 50 customers will receive a free sandwich of their choice. The Pike & Rose location will be Roaming Rooster’s first restaurant in Maryland and Montgomery County, and 9th overall. The company has also announced plans to open a Gaithersburg location later this year. We’re told an official announcement on the exact location will be made once the previous tenant has completely vacated.

In addition to its famous buttermilk fried chicken sandwiches, the 1,843 square-foot restaurant will also serve homemade frozen custard scoops and hand-spun milkshakes and says it anticipates employing up to 30 people there.

20 acres of Gaithersburg’s Crown Farm was sold to JBG Rosenfeld Retail and the Bozzuto Group for $28 million nearly 10 years ago, in July of 2012. According to documents from what was then Crown Farm Community, this purchase included approximately 11 percent of Crown Farm’s 180 acres, for the development of Downtown Crown, “a mixed-use project slated to include a Harris Teeter-anchored retail center and nearly 540 apartments.” JBG Rosenfeld Retail purchased the property to build 260,000 square feet of retail. The Bozzuto Group purchased the multifamily development rights to build 538 apartments above the retail.

Located in Gaithersburg,  just west of Interstate-270 and the Intercounty Connector, Downtown Crown is considered the “retail heart” of Crown—a 182-acre master-planned community that was to consist of “more than 2,200 new homes and apartments, acres of parks, trails and a future transit stop for the Corridor City Transitway.” The community plan also incorporated a high school and a Corridor Cities Transit station for a light rail or bus line that would connect Gaithersburg with Clarksburg. Construction began later that summer for the plans that included the previously mentioned Harris Teeter, an LA Fitness, and a Starbucks. In October, the following restaurants were announced for Downtown Crown (not all ended up opening):

Back in September of 2021 we let you know that &Pizza would be coming to Olney’s Fair Hill Shopping Center. At that time, we didn’t have an exact location, noting that it would likely take over a spot that was home to an existing business. It turns out the location will be the storefront that was formerly home to Olney Winery. Olney Winery will soon be moving to Ashton Market, but will remain in the Fair Hill Shopping Center until the Ashton Market location is ready to open. This means that &Pizza would not begin construction until after Olney Winery has moved, so the opening is still many months away, possibly early 2023.

&pizza was founded by Michael Lastoria and Steve Salis (Ted’s Bulletin, Federalist Pig, and Ensemble) in 2012 with their first location on H Street in D.C. The growing chain now has over 36 locations across the east coast including MoCo locations in Bethesda, two in Gaithersburg (Crown and Gaithersburg Square), Germantown, Pike & Rose, and Silver Spring.

Flower Coffee Collective has announced that it’s last day of service will be on June 25. The mobile coffee shop opened at 8805 Flower Ave in Silver Spring (in front of El Gavilan Restaurant) in August of last year and sold specialty coffee, espresso, agua fresca and pastries out of a vintage camper.

Flower Coffee posted the following message on their social media pages: “It’s with a heavy heart that I tell you Flower Coffee is closing. Our final day of operation will be Saturday, June 25th. While this iteration of my coffee journey is coming to a close, it is not the end of coffee in the Long Branch neighborhood. Your individual and community support has made this particular coffee venture a success, and as we move forward I can’t wait to share what the future holds. More soon!”

Update 6/20:  Apna Pizza has announced that due to an electrical issue the restaurant will not be opening this week. New opening date to be determined.

Back in March we let you know that Apna Pizza is coming to 14050 Travilah Rd in Rockville (Travilah area), the former site of Pizza Palace. The new pizzeria has wrapped up construction and a countdown on the restaurant website says that the restaurant will open later this week

The menu consists of starters like ham croquettes, empanadas, bacalitos, and more. A variety of sandwiches and sides are on the menu, as well as pork. beef, chicken, and seafood entrees. The OTC Bar & Grille in Olde Towne Gaithersburg has announced it is now open for carryout and delivery. OTC Bar & Grille is located in the former Olde Towne Cafe restaurant space at 226 E Diamond Ave in Gaithersburg, as well as the adjacent space that was previously home to Diamond Drugs. Last year the owners of the Olde Towne Cafe knocked down the wall that separates the two locations to create the new restaurant/bar space.

Olde Towne Cafe has been a staple in Olde Towne Gaithersburg for decades, serving pancakes, waffles, and breakfast platters, as well as lunch sandwiches. The new restaurant features many favorites from the Old Towne Cafe’s menu, and will also be open for dinner and serve alcohol once the restaurant is open for dine-in customers.
