First Look at Baltimore-Based Ice Cream Shop ‘The Charmery’

Baltimore-Based ice cream shop The Charmery will open its newest location at 8551 Connecticut Ave, Suite 202, in Chevy Chase on Friday, June 23rd– it’s first in Montgomery County. The Charmery held its first soft opening event today from 6pm-9pm and will hold its second soft opening event on Thursday from 6pm-9pm (video below).

As part of the grand opening the store will unveil a special flavor as an homage to F. Scott Fitzegerald, who lived in Baltimore, but is known to have spent time in Montgomery County and is buried at a Rockville cemetery. The flavor is called Fitzgerald’s Rickey and is comprised of gin and lime flavored ice cream.

Charlie’s Pizza Signage Now Up in Derwood (Restaurant is Open)

Charlie’s Pizza and Subs has taken over the restaurant that was previously known as Sam’s Pizza & Subs at 15855 Redland Rd (off of Frederick Rd) in Derwood. While the sale became official as of Wednesday March 14, 2023, the restaurant operated as Sam’s until March 29, 2023 when the name changed to Charlie’s. After 2.5 months. The restaurant received approval for the final change– the official signage.

The updates come with a new name and new hours. Charlie’s will be open daily and will serve beer and wine for dine-in and carry out. The restaurant is currently working on delivery of beer and wine as well. The new menu offers many of the selections currently on the Sam’s menu as well as fresh wraps (chicken, shrimp, Caeser), Maryland crab cakes, and more.

New York’s Chip City Prepares for Construction on First Maryland Store

Last November, we let you know that New York‘s Chip City will be opening its first Maryland location at the Shoppes of Bethesda, replacing Fancy Cakes By Leslie at 4939 Elm St. Fancy Cakes by Leslie closed in October 2022. While there has been no movement since then, a commercial permit was issued earlier this month for a $210,000 buildout at the location.

Five years ago, cookies were a side hustle for Theodore Gailas and Peter Phillips. Since then, they’ve opened over a dozen Chip City cookie shops in and around New York with plans to expand outside of the area. Chip City is expected to rapidly expand, with over 20 stores expected to open in 2023. According to Forbes, The rollout plan will be supported by the founder of fast casual restaurant Shake Shack, Danny Meyer, who recently invested $10 million in the cookies. An opening timeframe for Chip City’s Bethesda location is not currently available.

Chipotle to Open New Digital Kitchen Style Restaurant in Rockville’s Rock Creek Village

Chipotle, which opened a new digital-only restaurant at 13801 Outlet Drive at the Briggs Chaney Marketplace in Silver Spring earlier this year, is bringing the concept to the Rock Creek Village Center in Rockville. The new concept, also known as “Chipotlane,” has no dining room and requires you to order through the Chipotle app, rather than the traditional assembly line format Chipotle is famous for.

The restaurant will open in the space that was previously home to Sun Trust Bank, joining The Creek Lodge Bar, Villa Maya, and more in the shopping center. According to Chipotle, “guests and delivery drivers can collect their digital orders through the Chipotlane drive-thru or walk-up window.” An opening timeframe is not yet available.

First Look at Proposed Dining Pier by Copper Canyon at Rio Lakefront

In April we let you know that Copper Canyon Grill is requesting approval for a 1,012 square foot covered dining pier to be located in the RIO Lake. At its regular meeting on June 7, 2023, the Planning Commission made the recommendation to the Mayor and City Council for approval (5-0 vote) of Schematic Development Plan SDP-9003-2021, based on the evidence and testimony submitted to the record and the findings in the Final Staff Analysis, to the Mayor and City Council.

Per the City of Gaithersburg: The Schematic Development Plan would add commercial as an allowed use on the RIO lake parcel. The Planning Commission was supportive and complimentary of the project, noting that this is an exciting new way to enjoy the existing lake. The Mayor & City Council Record was closed at 5 pm on June 14, 2023 with the anticipated Mayor & City Council Final Action to be presented on July 3, 2023 during the Mayor & City Council Meeting. Colony Grill, a popular Connecticut Pizza restaurant offering “bar pies”, opens its newest location today (Monday, June 19), at 11:30am in Potomac’s Cabin John Village. Pricing for Colony Grill’s pies range from $10.50 to $13.50 with options for adding additional toppings or gluten–free crust. The menu also features a “salad pie,” as well as a breakfast pie that features a choice of bacon or sausage, egg, and cheese and is available all day.

”Colony Grill, the 85-year-old restaurant brand known for its family-friendly tavern settings, gracious hospitality, and famous “hot oil” bar-style pizzas, has announced the opening of its newest location at Cabin John Village, a bustling mixed-use development located at 11325 Seven LocksRoad in Potomac, Maryland. Beginning Monday, June 19, the 4,800-square-foot space will be open daily from 11:30 a.m. until late closing, offering seating for about 175 across its dining room, bar, and patio.

Baked Potato House, Featuring “Delicious Stuffed Potatoes”, is Coming to Clarksburg

Baked Potato House, featuring “delicious stuffed potatoes”, is coming to the Clarksburg Premium Outlets, taking over the space that was previously home to Day & Night Cereal Bar. The cereal bar cleared out of the space last month.

Currently not much is known about Baked Potato House, but similar restaurants and carts have recently opened in areas like New York. Baked Potato King is a similar restaurant in New York and a new cart, known as Potato House, has recently opened. They both offer a variety of stuffed baked potatoes that allow customers to stuff a large baked potatoes with their choice of salads (chicken, tuna, chicken, salmon, eggplant, zucchini, mushrooms and more) and their choice of sauces including ketchup, mustard, ranch, sour cream, and more.

VinoRita Wine Slushies Coming Soon to Montgomery Mall

VinoRita Wine Slushies is coming to the Montgomery Mall food court, taking over the kiosk space that was previously home to HalfSmoke, Gelato Galax, and Coldstone Creamery. HalfSmoke closed in April and VinoRita currently has a hearing with Montgomery County’s Alcohol Beverage Services (ABS) on Thursday, July 6th at 1pm. VinoRita currently has locations in Georgia (Atlanta) and North Carolina (Charlotte and Concord). While an opening date is not yet available we don’t expect it to take long following the approval of the alcohol license.

The menu consists of a variety of flavors, including the best selling “Black San,” which is a Blackberry Sangria. Other flavors include Peach Frose, Strawberry Daquiri, Blueberry Pomegranate, and a variety of non-alcoholic slushees. Additional information below, Per VinoRita:

Buc-ee’s To Open First Virginia Location; Plans For Additional VA Stores

According to New Kent County Economic Development, Buc-ee’s Travel Center will expand their operations to New Kent County, Virginia at the exit 211 interchange along Interstate 64. The company plans to construct a 74,000 SF store with 120 fueling positions, 557 parking spaces, 24 Tesla charging spaces and 10 bus/RV parking spaces. The anticipated opening date for the Virginia’s first Buc-ee’s is 2027 with additional Virginia locations planned for the future. According to BizJournals, “Buc-ee’s has identified multiple Virginia sites for potential stores, including one on the I-81 corridor and another on I-95 north of Richmond, bringing the chain ever closer to Greater Washington.”

According to the company, “Buc-ee’s Travel Center is a family-focused travel center featuring a wide range of freshly prepared foods including home-crafted bbq, custom made sandwiches, fresh salads and fruits, baked goods, and sweets as well as a unique collection of gifts, housewares, clothing, and weekend get-away gear. Buc-ee’s is open 24/7 and provides our guests with the cleanest restrooms and friendliest staff to be found anywhere; much less on I-64. Buc-ee’s is not a truck stop; 18 wheelers are not allowed on the property. Buc-ee’s is a one-of-a-kind destination. Buc-ee’s will employ (full time with benefits) over 175 residents earning an average minimum wage of $16-18 per hour”.

Dok Khao Thai Eatery (Woodbridge, Columbia) is Coming to MoCo

Dok Khao Thai Eatery is coming to Montgomery County, signing on to move into a new space in Chevy Chase Lake, next to The Charmery (opening on Friday) off of Connecticut Ave in Chevy Chase. Dok Thai Thai Eatery opened its first location in Woodbridge, VA, followed by a second in the Merriweather District in Downtown Columbia, which is coincidentally also located to a relatively new location of The Charmery. Only a few spots remain available at Chevy Chase Lake, which is anchored by Amazon Fresh.

The restaurant describes itself as a “Local Thai Cuisine for everyone – every dish is crafty made to order using high quality ingredients including locally made fresh noodles, chef’s home grown Thai herbs, & Rare-Finds Asian vegetables.” The menu includes “Deliciously addictive Street Food & Noodles, Sense of Thai craft cocktails, and homemade cakes and an Asian Inspired Dessert Bar . At Dok Khao Thai Eatery, we brought to you the breeze of a Bangkok Night Market and the taste of real Thai street food with a variety of Thai small plates, healthy salads, & hearty noodle soups.” An opening date/timeframe is not yet available.
