After less than a year, BurgerIM has closed in Wheaton Mall.

We were first told of potential trouble for Maryland locations of the Israeli burger chain last week when Restaurant Business reported that the state of Maryland had revoked BurgerIM’s franchise rights in the state, noting that the company has not responded to the suspension the state issued in late December.

Husband and wife team, Florian and Shannon Radke, opened their first bakery in Berkeley, California in 2010. Four years later, the couple appeared on Shark Tank, where they initially accepted a $200,000 investment for 20% of their company (the deal later fell through due to differences in how investor Robert Herjavec and the Radke’s saw the company moving forward).

We’re told the bakery will be located at 230 Crown Park Ave., the former home of Yogiberry, next to Chopt. After a few delays, they expect to open late summer 2019

I spoke with manager Leon Mensah (a Quince Orchard graduate) who told me that if everything goes as planned with permits, it can open as early as late May.

The first Burgerim (an Israeli Burger chain) opened in 2011 and the burger chain has already expanded to over 160 stores worldwide in just over 5 years.

There were previously rumors of Matchbox also replacing Ted’s Bulletin In Downtown Crown (Gaithersburg), but they never materialized before Matchbox sold off the Ted’s Bulletin brand last year.

Matchbox currently has a location in MoCo on Rockville Pike. The new Silver Spring location is expected to open by Spring 2019.
