Barry Dufek has been appointed as the Rockville City Police Department’s new deputy police chief and officially joined the department on September 29, with a ceremonial swearing-in by the Mayor and Council scheduled in the coming week. Dufek brings 25 years of law enforcement experience, including leadership roles in patrol, investigations, and administration, and most recently served as chief of police in Purcellville, Virginia.

Long before television became a staple in every American home, one of the most groundbreaking broadcasts in U.S. history was sent from right here in Montgomery County. On July 2, 1928, Charles Francis Jenkins, a prolific inventor with more than 400 patents, launched W3XK, the nation’s first licensed commercial television station, from Wheaton, Maryland (Library of Congress; National Museum of American History).

Governor Wes Moore today announced the new Maryland Blue Ribbon Schools Program to recognize exemplary schools. The state program, which previously ended after the 2019-2020 school year, has been reinstated following the U.S. Department of Education’s decision in August to discontinue the long-running National Blue Ribbon Schools Program. Seven schools, listed below, were named Maryland Blue Ribbon Schools.
