Three MoCo restaurants have made it onto Eater DC’s “Hottest New Brunches to Try Around D.C.” list that includes some of the most popular new restaurants that offer “D.C.’s most cherished meal.” The restaurants are listed geographically, which puts the three Montgomery County restaurants in the top 3 spots.

Listed first is Melina in Pike & Rose:

Progress continues to be made at 915 Meeting Street in Pike & Rose as above-grade work is in its early stages at the state-of-the-art, LEED Gold-targeted building featuring 9,600 square feet of ground floor retail, approximately 25,000-square-foot flexible floor plates and 700 dedicated parking spaces.

The building, designed by Gensler, will incorporate a vibrant architectural design that includes numerous amenities, such as a rooftop conference center with collaborative common areas, WiredScore-targeted connectivity, a fitness center, and resource-efficient sustainable and wellness features. The grand opening for Roaming Rooster at 11586 Old Georgetown Road in North Bethesda takes place on Tuesday, June 21 at 11am. As part of the grand opening festivities, the first 50 customers will receive a free sandwich of their choice. The Pike & Rose location will be Roaming Rooster’s first restaurant in Maryland and Montgomery County, and 9th overall. The company has also announced plans to open a Gaithersburg location later this year. We’re told an official announcement on the exact location will be made once the previous tenant has completely vacated.

In addition to its famous buttermilk fried chicken sandwiches, the 1,843 square-foot restaurant will also serve homemade frozen custard scoops and hand-spun milkshakes and says it anticipates employing up to 30 people there.

LensCrafters at 26 Grand Corner Ave in Gaithersburg is now open. This is the second new LensCrafters to open in MoCo in the past month, the other being in Pike & Rose at 901 Rose Ave in North Bethesda. The LensCrafters location inside of Lakeforest Mall is now closed.

LensCrafters offers eye exams and sells prescription glasses, sunglasses, and contact lenses. “Customers can expect to find innovative technology, the newest styles, and unparalleled personalized service. They offer a wide range of prescription lenses for eyeglasses and sunglasses, perfectly tailored to your lifestyle.”

Back in September we let you know that South Block, a smoothie and juice bar best known for their acai bowls, would be opening a new location in Pike & Rose. South Block has been aiming for a summer 2022 opening, and announced this morning that it will be opening on Tuesday, June 21st.

Summer House Santa Monica will remain closed for at least the first half of today as the popular Pike & Rose destination awaits inspections following a kitchen fire that caused approximately $25k in damages. The restaurant tells us they hope to reopen for dinner, but that it looks unlikely at the moment. We’ll have an update on the impending reopening of the restaurant as soon as we get word from Summer House.

From yesterday: Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Units were called to the scene of a kitchen fire at Summer House Santa Monica on the 11800 block of Grand Park Avenue in the Pike & Rose development at approximately 4:30pm on Sunday afternoon, according to MCFRS PIO Pete Piringer.

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Units were called to the scene of a kitchen fire at Summer House Santa Monica on the 11800 block of Grand Park Avenue in the Pike & Rose development at approximately 4:30pm on Sunday afternoon, according to MCFRS PIO Pete Piringer.

The initial report was of a fire in the kitchen of the commercial restaurant that is located beneath the Perseus apartment complex in Pike & Rose. Multiple units arrived to find a fire in the area of a drive and the wall behind the stove in the kitchen of the restaurant.

The grand opening for Roaming Rooster at 11586 Old Georgetown Road, North Bethesda, is set for June 21st. The 1,843-square-foot restaurant will feature its famous buttermilk fried chicken sandwiches, sides, salads and an all week breakfast menu. A minority- and family-owned business founded in 2015, Roaming Rooster began as a food truck that traveled across the Washington, D.C. metro region. Its popularity grew and today there are several food trucks and multiple storefronts. This will be the first Roaming Rooster in Maryland and Montgomery County and its sixth fast-casual restaurant in the region.

In early 2015, Roaming Rooster was founded in Washington, D.C. by a family with a unique concept. The idea of a food truck with fried chicken that you could feel good about eating: free-range, grain-fed, and antibiotic free chicken served fresh every day. Within months, word got out on social media about the delicious poultry menu and the demand for Roaming Rooster soon called for the expansion from one food truck to three and subsequently, to numerous brick and mortars. Since then, the popularity of the only food truck in D.C. serving tasty free-range chicken has grown massively. Requests for catering, private events, and scheduled food truck visits have been pouring in from D.C. and the surrounding areas of Maryland and Virginia. The fast expansion of Roaming Rooster in just under a year is easy to explain – where your food comes from matters, and we bring that ideal to every meal we serve.

Evoluxxy, a women’s clothing store that originally opened in Pike & Rose in February 2020, will be having its grand reopening at its new location in Pike & Rose on Saturday, May 28th. Evoluxxy took over the old Fransesca’s location in Pike & Rose, opening just weeks before all of the Covid-19 closures. The clothing store has moved down the street and will be located at 11804 Grand Park Ave going forward.

Back in September we let you know that South Block, a smoothie and juice bar best known for their acai bowls, would be opening a new location in Pike & Rose. South Block has been aiming for a summer 2022 opening, and they seem to be on pace as signage has now gone up at the space that’s as formerly occupied by the Residences At Pike & Rose leasing office, right next to the recently opened Call Your Mother Deli (The leasing office has moved to the spot formerly occupied by Nava Health.)

Along with their acai bowls, South Block offers other fruit and vegetable-based bowls, a range of smoothies, and cold pressed juices. They currently have eleven locations throughout DC and Virginia– their Pike & Rose spot will be their first location in Maryland. In addition to their brick and mortar locations, South Block has an online storefront where they sell pre-blended smoothie bowl kits that they deliver throughout the continental United States.
