This probably won’t come as a surprise to anyone, but we just received word that MoCo’s last remaining Ruby Tuesday has closed permanently.
The City of Gaithersburg has recently authorized an outline of a development plan with the new owners of Lakeforest Mall, WRS Inc.
The agreement is to set forth a framework for the redevelopment of the property (Lakeforest Mall) away from its current status as a roughly 40 year old mall to a thoughtfully designed mix of uses (including residential, commercial, and retail uses).
We were just informed of two impending closures at Lakeforest Mall in Gaithersburg.
Forever 21, the “fast fashion” retailer known for its trendy offerings and low pricing, filed for bankruptcy last month. At the time, the Lakeforest location was the only one of the four MoCo locations that was not listed as one of the stores expected to close.

Chi-Chi’s also had a Rockville location in Wintergreen Plaza that later became Broadway/Ted’s 355 Diner and is currently Habit Burger and Jersey Mike’s.
They left town nearly two decades ago, but Lakeforest never replaced the restaurant (located across from the old Lakeforest Silver Diner). The vacant location was closed off, but recently the window covers were removed.
While Lord & Taylor has made things difficult with their refusal to close its White Flint store, long after the mall has been demolished, it seems as if they’re ready to play ball when it comes to the redevelopment of the area.
The mall has suffered some major losses lately with Starbucks and McDonald’s closing, and JC Penney announcing they’ll be closing in the near future.
Among the closings will be the Lakeforest Mall location, which is one of two MoCo JCPenney locations (the Wheaton Mall location is not currently scheduled to close).
I just got off the phone with the Lakeforest JCPenney and was told they would be closing on July 5th.
This morning we have received word that another billion dollar corporation will be shutting down their Lakeforest location at some point in March.
Starbucks confirmed that they will be closing their Lakeforest location at some point between the end of this month and the end of March.
Usually one of the busiest restaurants in the eatery, this comes as a surprise to many.
