Wheaton Mall to Host Event With “Real Live Mermaids” Later This Month

To coincide with the release of the upcoming live-action Little Mermaid movie, Westfield Wheaton will be hosting a “Make a Splash with Real Mermaids” event on May 27^th from 12-4pm in the mall’s lower level Macy’s Court. The event will feature “live” mermaids, a full custom designed mermaid cove, and live DJ.

Per Westfield Wheaton: “Everyone’s favorite little mermaid makes her return to the big screen at AMC theaters, but you’ll only find REAL LIVE MERMAIDS at Westfield Wheaton center! Lakeforest Sketch Plan Approved Unanimously

“Tonight we approved the Lakeforest Sketch Plan application & MXD rezoning by a 5-0 vote. During policy discussion, I implored the applicant to wow us at the schematic development stage and create a destination with a true sense of place. A true Transformational opportunity for the City of Gaithersburg!” – Gaithersburg City Councilmember, Jim McNulty

The next step is for WRS, Inc. to present a Schematic Development Plan (SDP) that will include very specific designs for the soon-to-be redeveloped Lakeforest Mall land. In a January meeting, WRS Inc. stated plans to demolish “as soon as they can.” Previously, WRS mentioned 2024 as a target date for demolition to occur and new construction to begin. This is all dependent on approval of the SDP in the coming months. Our very own Alex Tsironis discusses it on FOX 5 below:

The Gaithersburg City Council will vote on the Lakeforest Sketch Plan on Monday, April 17th. Last month, the City’s Planning Commission recommend approval (with conditions) of the plan. In a January meeting, WRS Inc., the company who purchased the mall, stated its plans to demolish “as soon as they can.” Previously, WRS mentioned 2024 as a target date for demolition to occur and new construction to begin.

“What they’re proposing is kind of like Crown, maybe not quite as high end but a really good master plan community,” Gaithersburg mayor Jud Ashman stated in an interview with MyMCMedia on Friday (the video can be seen below).

HalfSmoke Closes in Montgomery Mall

HalfSmoke has closed it’s Westfield Montgomery Mall location. HalfSmoke was located in a kiosk in the mall’s food court/terrace (previously occupied by Coldstone Creamery and Gelato Galaxy) and was the first restaurant/bar to serve alcohol in the food court (nearby restaurants off of the food court served alcohol, ex: Slade’s). The menu consisted of the best selling sausages and sides from its DC location (651 Florida Ave, NW), as well as boozy milkshakes and a funnel cake bar. Earlier today we reported that HalfSmoke’s sister restaurant Butter Me Up had also closed its Montgomery Mall location.

HalfSmoke announced plans to open a Rockville Town Square location at 36A Maryland Ave back in August 2020 but there has been little movement at the site. We were told recently by an employee of HalfSmoke that the Rockville restaurant is still under construction and that there is no timeframe for opening. HalfSmoke DC was the first restaurant of its kind to serve gourmet sausages via an assembly line format and its sausages and toppings can be fully customized to create over 50,000 variations. HalfSmoke has an additional location at 2400 Boston St in Baltimore.

Butter Me Up Closes in Montgomery Mall

Butter Me Up has closed its location in Westfield Montgomery Mall in Bethesda. The breakfast restaurant opened in the former Aroma Espresso Bar location on the mall’s lower level in May of last year. Butter Me Up is the sister restaurant of popular DC gourmet sausage restaurant HalfSmoke (651 Florida Ave NW). HalfSmoke opened a location in the Montgomery Mall food terrace back in July 2022 which has also closed.

Butter Me Up featured “instagrammable” decor, offered a menu that consisted of a variety of breakfast sandwiches, toasts, sides, bowls, smoothies, and juices. A Yelp article named Butter Me Up DC’s best breakfast sandwich, as the restaurant’s first location can be found within HalfSmoke in Florida Ave NW.

Wild Custom Apparel to Open in Montgomery Mall

Signage is up for Wild Custom Apparel on the lower level of Westfield Montgomery Mall in Bethesda. Wild Custom Apparel currently has a location at St. Charles Towne Center in Waldorf, MD. According to its website, “Wild Custom Apparel offers high quality, customized printing or embroidery for your t-shirts, masks, or hoodies.” No opening date has been announced.

Jolly Yolly Kids Now Open

Jolly Yolly Kids is now open on the lower level of Montgomery Mall in Bethesda, next to The Cheesecake Factory. The 8,000+ square ft. indoor play space features playgrounds, party rental space, and an art studio. Prices range from $12.95-$18.95 for two hours or playtime, depending on age and day of the week.

Per Jolly Yolly: “Jolly Yolly Kids is an indoor play and learning center for children aged 13 and under. The center has a play area of approximately 8,500 square feet, equipped with a multilevel premium indoor play structure for children aged 13 and under, tot lots for children from 2 to 7 years old, baby area for children aged 2 and under, and party rooms.

Melashops, a South Asian Fashion Market, Opens Today in Montgomery Mall

Melashops, a south Asian fashion market, is opening today (Saturday, April 1) at Montgomery Mall. Melashops, which originally opened in Lakeforest Mall in 2019, offers Indian/Pakistani/Bangladeshi apparel, jewelry, and accessories. “We have managed to grow our business over the years, even as the rest of Lakeforest was shutting down. Our new Montgomery Mall store, located on the first floor of the Nordstroms wing and across Urban Outfitters, represents the culmination of years of market feedback and optimization.” owner Bobby Mozunder tells us.

“We are in effect, a mall-within-a-mall and the only multi-vendor shopping destination for South Asian apparel in the DMV area.” Their vendors provide the full spectrum of South Asian clothing, including sarees, dresses, menswear, kids wears, high-end bridal wear, fancy Bollywood party dresses, casual wear, as well as lots of detailed jewelry. Some vendors are permanently located at the store and other vendors attend as their schedule permits. Holidays such as Eid and Diwali can be especially packed and busy. Lakeforest Mall Closes Permanently on Friday, March 31

Lakeforest Mall will close to the public on Friday, March 31st (video of Lakeforest through the years available below). The Gaithersburg Planning Commission gave a recommendation of approval for redevelopment plans on March 1, 2023. The Gaithersburg Mayor and City Council will have a Policy Discussion April 17, 2023, where a final decision is expected to be made. No public testimony will be taken on April 17.

Lakeforest Mall first opened on September 12, 1978. At that time, the mall’s anchor stores were JCPenney, Sears, Woodward & Lothrop, and Hecht’s. The mall was one of the first in the United States to feature an indoor ice skating rink on the lower level, in the “H section”, along with being the biggest indoor shopping mall in the county at the time of grand opening. The ice skating rink was replaced by a NTI Theaters movie theater in 1984, later renamed Cineplex Odeon Lakeforest 5, then by a food court, which now occupies the space. The mall was built on top of Lake Walker, a park on the property prior. The mall opened with approximately 30-50 stores, with some of the first stores being relocated from the then nearby indoor Village Mall (now an outdoor strip mall called Montgomery Village Center since 1991) and absorbed onto the property.
