Collision Results in Two Overturned Vehicles Tuesday Afternoon

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) responded to a collision involving two vehicles on Tuesday, April 25 around 12pm. According to Chief Spokesperson for MCFRS Pete Piringer, the collicion occurred at the interscetion of Parkland Dr & Faroe Pl in Wheaton. One adult was transported to the hospital with Priority 2 trauma. We will post an update if additional information becomes available.

21-Year-Old Wheaton Resident Wins $50,000

“I handed it to my uncle,” the Montgomery County resident said, “and he had the (Lottery) app on his phone and scanned it.” The low-key winner said his family — including his uncle — were happy about his Lottery luck. The construction worker plans to spend some of the prize on a vacation cruise or trip.

The $5 Extreme Green game has one $50,000 top prize remaining unclaimed and thousands of other prizes ranging from $5 to $5,000. The lucky Lottery retailer that sold the scratch-off can also celebrate. The Montgomery County business will receive a $500 bonus from the Lottery for selling a $50,000 top-prize winning scratch-off.

Suspect Arrested for Fatal Stabbing of Rockville Man After Altercation on Metrobus

Montgomery County Department of Police – Major Crimes detectives learned that Cunningham and Curtis began arguing while on the bus and Curtis pulled out a knife. The bus driver was able to deescalate the situation, however the argument continued, and the driver stopped the bus on Amherst Ave., where Cunningham got off the bus and Curtis followed. Curtis allegedly stabbed Cunningham and walked away. Cunningham was transported to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Postponed: April 15, 2023, Shine Brighter Together event re-scheduled due to rain The new date for the event is April 30, 2023, 11:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m.

Montgomery Parks, part of The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, is postponing the Shine Brighter Together event originally scheduled for this Saturday, April 15, 2023, due to inclement weather in the forecast. The Autism Acceptance event will instead be held on its scheduled rain date, Sunday April 30, 2023, 11:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m.at Wheaton Regional Park.

Hybrid Public Meeting on the McComas Avenue Neighborhood Greenway Project to be Held on Tuesday, April 18

Per MCDOT: On Tuesday, April 18, starting at 6:30 p.m., the Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) will hold a public information meeting about the latest progress of the McComas Avenue Neighborhood Greenway project in Wheaton. The public will have an opportunity to ask questions and provide comments. The McCommas Avenue Neighborhood Greenway project aims to improve pedestrian and bicyclist safety on McComas Avenue near Wheaton Mall. The project limit is from St. Paul Street to Georgia Avenue including portions of Douglas Avenue and Windham Lane. Neighborhood Greenways are streets with low motorized traffic volumes and speeds, designed and designated to give walking and bicycling priority by using signs, pavement markings, and speed and volume management measures to calm traffic and discourage through trips by motor vehicles to create safe, convenient use of streets by pedestrians and cyclists. Design elements can include traffic diverters at key intersections, traffic circles or mini-roundabouts, traffic calming, shared lane markings, crossing improvements, and wayfinding signage to guide bicyclists along the route and to key destinations among other things.

Online registration is required to attend. This meeting will be accessible both in-person and virtually. The in-person meeting will be held at the Kentmont Clubhouse (2900 Faulkner Pl, Kensington, MD 20895), and the virtual meeting link along with Zoom connection instructions will be emailed to you on the morning of the public meeting. Questions and comments will become a matter of public record.

RespectFest Festival Takes Place on Sunday, April 16

One in three teens experience dating abuse. So the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, Police, State’s Attorney’s Office, Family Justice Center and MCPS have teamed up for RespectFest to begin discussing what healthy dating relationships look like early on. RespectFest is currently running (April 10-16) with virtual seminars and events running through April 14th. Then the in-person festival will be held on Sunday April 16th from 1-4 p.m. at the Wheaton Community Rec Center and Park.

The family-friendly event will include activities to learn about dating violence, consent, how to help a friend, what the warning signs are and what the resources are in the community. There will also be performances, FREE food, yoga and self-defense demos, raffle prizes, a resource fair with other community organizations, and story-time at the Wheaton Library.

Department of Permitting Service to Host Workshop for Civil Engineers on Wednesday, April 26

Per Montgomery County: Montgomery County’s Department of Permitting Services (DPS) will host an educational workshop for civil engineers from 8 a.m.-noon on Wednesday, April 26 in the auditorium of the County’s Wheaton office building, which is located at 2425 Reedie Dr. Topics to be discussed at the workshop will include sediment control, storm water management concepts and the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission’s development review process. The workshop agenda is posted on the DPS website at montgomerycountymd.gov/dps.

Shoe City Files for Bankruptcy; Closing All 39 Stores Including Both MoCo Locations

Baltimore-based Shoe City has filed for Chapter 11 on March 31 in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Maryland, according to BizJournals. The company has 39 stores in Maryland, Washington DC, and Virginia, and has begun closing/going-out-of-business sales at all locations, including its two Montgomery County locations at Ellsworth Place in Downtown Silver Spring and Westfield Wheaton.

Shoe City has been a family-owned business since its inception as Eileen Shoes in 1949. The company rebranded to Shoe City in 1980. “Unfortunately, after 74 years in business, the Shoe City legacy has come to an end,” wrote Stanley Mastil– the chief restructuring officer of Esco (the official business name of Shoe City).

Police Continue to Investigate Fatal Stabbing; Identity of Victim Released

Per MCPD: Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – Major Crimes Division, are investigating a fatal stabbing on Amherst Ave. in Wheaton. On Wednesday, April 5, 2023, at approximately 12:23 p.m., 4th District officers responded to a stabbing that just occurred in front of Montgomery County Public Parking Garage #45, in the 11300 block of Amherst Ave. Upon Arrival, officers located 28-year-old Amontae Robert Cunningham of Rockville, with what appeared to be a stab wound. Cunningham was transported to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Homicide detectives responded to the scene and through the course of the investigation, learned that Cunningham, who was a passenger on a WMATA Metro bus, got into an argument with an unknown male suspect. The bus driver stopped the bus in front of the parking garage on Amherst Ave. and Cunningham got off the bus. The suspect followed Cunningham off the bus and stabbed Cunningham. Detectives are asking for any passengers on the bus before the stabbing to contact the Major Crimes Division at 240-773-5070. Anyone with information regarding this suspect or this crime, is asked to contact Crime Solvers of Montgomery County toll-free at 1-866-411-TIPS (8477). A reward of up to $10,000 is being offered for information that leads to the arrest of the suspect. Callers may remain anonymous.

Montgomery Parks to Host GreenFest Celebration at Brookside Gardens on Earth Day, Saturday, April 22, 2023

GreenFest in the Gardens is part of a two-day celebration with Montgomery County: the second festival, GreenFest in the City, takes place Sunday, April 23, 2023, at Marian Fryer Town Plaza. Montgomery Parks, part of The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, is participating in a two-day GreenFest celebration during Earth Day weekend Saturday and Sunday, April 22-23, 2023. The event includes GreenFest in the Gardens at Brookside Gardens and GreenFest in the City at Marian Fryer Town Plaza in downtown Wheaton. “This is our third year participating in GreenFest by hosting a fun, educational event at Brookside Gardens,” said Mike Riley, director of Montgomery Parks. “Brookside Gardens is the perfect venue for this event – where attendees can enjoy the beautiful 52 acres of gardens while learning practical ways to help the environment.”

Celebration of April as ‘Earth Month’ Will Include Free ‘GreenFest in the Gardens’ on April 22 and ‘Greenfest in the City’ on April 23 in Wheaton

Per Montgomery County: Montgomery County’s eighth annual GreenFest is back this year, taking place in two different locations, ‘GreenFest in the Gardens’ will take place at Brookside Gardens in Wheaton on Saturday, April 22. ‘GreenFest in the City’ will happen at Marian Fryer Town Plaza in Downtown Wheaton on Sunday, April 23. Both will be free, family friendly events organized by a coalition of public, nonprofit and university partners. The Greenfest events, which are part of the County’s celebration of April as “Earth Month,” will feature more than 60 vendors at each location. The vendors represent green businesses, environmental nonprofits, arts and crafts vendors. They will feature educational activities for children and adults.

“GreenFest is one of my favorite yearly County events and I am pleased that we have now extended it to two days this year,” said County Executive Marc Elrich. “GreenFest provides County residents climate-friendly actions we can all take at home, at work, and in our daily lives and I hope all community members will join us at Brookside Gardens and Marian Fryer Town Plaza to celebrate Earth Day. Montgomery County is dedicated to building a community culture of environmental responsibility and sustainability, and ‘GreenFest’ is a great example of how we can all work together toward that goal.”
