According to a report released by Maryland’s Office of Legislative Audits looking into the Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA), thousands of drivers were incorrectly charged by Maryland tolls between April 13, 2021, and January 30, 2022.

“Based on our data analysis for all MDTA toll facilities, we identified 82,847 customers that were potentially charged more than once for a single trip through a toll facility. The toll charges (including both potential duplicate tolls and correct tolls) for these customers totaled approximately $645,000. A majority of these tolls (80 percent) occurred at three toll facilities – the Intercounty Connector (ICC), the William Preston Lane Jr. Memorial (Bay) Bridge, and the Fort McHenry Tunnel.”

The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration will begin a project next week to improve several state roads in Montgomery and Prince George’s counties. Crews will remove line stripping and pavement markings and apply a micro-surface coating that protects and extends the life of the asphalt. Weather permitting, work will be complete by early summer.

Work will take place weekdays 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and overnights, 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. During work hours, motorists can expect lane shifts and single lane closures guided by a flagging operation. The State Highway Administration understands roadwork can be an inconvenience and asks motorists to be patient and stay alert in the work zones. The locations in Montgomery County are as follows:

Construction along Baltimore Road is in its final phase, with the city’s contractor eyeing a spring completion for the project. Over the winter, crews installed the final storm drains, new curb and gutter, and several sidewalk and shared-use path links between Rockville High School and Broadwood Drive.

In late winter, crews made intersection improvements at Avery and Baltimore roads and installed curb, gutter, sidewalk and driveway aprons between Edmonston and Gladstone drives. Final roadway paving from Edmonston Drive northeast to the city limit near White Gate Road is scheduled to be completed this spring. Visit www.rockvillemd.gov/baltimoreroadproject to learn more about this long-planned project to improve safety and access along a major connection between the city’s east side and Rockville Town Center. Featured photo courtesy of Google Maps

Per Montgomery County Department of Transportation: On Thursday, March 30 starting at 6 p.m., the Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) will hold an online public meeting to discuss a new dedicated bus lane pilot project along the University Boulevard (MD 193) corridor between Amherst and Dennis Avenues in Silver Spring. If supported, the bus lane will launch this summer/fall. This dedicated bus lane, shared with bikes and emergency vehicles, will reduce traffic congestion for buses on the route and provide faster and more reliable service for riders. The meeting will share information, answer questions and allow for MCDOT to receive community feedback.

The bus lane will be clearly identified with signs and pavement markings, and there will be no changes to existing parking or loading. MCDOT provides for the planning, design and construction of improvements to bus service. The Bus Priority Project includes multiple projects that improve local bus timing, ease of access and safety such as marked dedicated bus lanes; queue jumps; passenger boarding and alighting improvements; implementation of transit signal priority; enhanced bus stops; and other similar improvements that will increase reliability and result in faster buses throughout Montgomery County.

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) responded to a single-vehicle collision involving a driver crashing into a utility pole on Muncaster Mill Rd, between Avery Rd and the MD200 ICC overpass, on Tuesday evening.

According to MCFRS Chief Spokesperson Pete Piringer, the driver crashed into a utility pole, with wires coming down on the vehicle and across the road. Communication/Verizon wires were also affected by the crash, which blocked lanes on Muncaster Mill Rd. One patient was transported with priority 1 trauma (life threatening injuries) and another was transported with priority 2 trauma (serious, but non-life threatening injuries). There is no word on what caused the crash.

Transurban has announced that Accelerate Maryland Partners (AM Partners) has decided not to proceed with the Maryland Express Lanes Project and as a result has today submitted a notice to terminate to the Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) in regard to the preferred developer agreement. Additional information below, per the Transurban press release:

AM Partners was originally selected in February 2021 as Maryland’s preferred developer for Phase 1 of the project. Since that time, extensive work has been undertaken on the project and draft concession agreement in partnership with MDOT. However, the project continues to face challenges including significant delays to environmental approvals, changing political landscape and environmental lawsuits that remain unresolved. Following extensive good faith negotiations by AM Partners, agreement with MDOT on the form of the concession agreement has not been reached and a committed section proposal will not be submitted by the deadline of 21 March 2023.

Update: The road is no longer closed, but some lanes remain blocked. Delayed expected.
