Update: All travel lanes have reopened on I-270 after a police incident closed local lanes at Falls Road on Wednesday, June 7. According to Rockville Police, “Around 11:00 a.m. this morning RCPD officers responded to the Northbound exit Ramp at Falls Road for the report of an individual threatening to jump. Out of an abundance of caution, the northbound local lanes were closed down as well as the exit ramp. After about two hours of successful negations, the individual willingly agreed to be taken into police custody and transported for medical assistance. All lanes of traffic have been reopened.”


Per the Maryland Attorney General: The Independent Investigations Division of the Office of the Attorney General has identified the decedent and involved officers in the fatal crash that occurred on May 20, 2023, in Montgomery County along I-270. The decedent has been identified as 37-year-old Lawrence White of Washington, D.C.

All the involved officers are with the Montgomery County Police Department. The officers are identified as Sergeant Brett Trahan, a 29-year veteran; Police Officer III Kyle Baxter, a 9-year veteran; Police Officer III Jonathan Johnson, a 5-year veteran; and Police Officer Quinton Bowles, who has approximately a year-and-a-half of law enforcement experience. All of the officers are assigned to the Patrol Services Bureau.


Healthy baby boy Conrad was born on the shoulder of 270N on May 25 at 5:51 PM. Dad reports mom and baby are doing great (photos below).

Heading to the hospital, the paramedics from Rockville Station 23 delivered the baby near exit 9, Sam Eig Highway. Mom and dad report the delivery was very quick and unexpected. Mom’s water broke as the ambulance pulled into their driveway and 20 minutes later a healthy 7lb 8oz, 20 inch baby Conrad made his entrance into the world. Mom and baby are receiving care at Holy Cross Germantown.


The main lanes of southbound 270 between 28 and Montrose Rd. were closed several hours on Sunday, May 21 as the result of a traffic collision that involved a pedestrian. Per the Maryland State Police: “At about 7:50 a.m., troopers from the Rockville Barrack responded to I-270 South north of Montrose Road for a report of a pedestrian struck.

According to a preliminary investigation, the pedestrian, for unknown reasons, ran into the road from the right shoulder. A Lincoln passenger vehicle was unable to avoid the pedestrian and struck the pedestrian. The pedestrian was then struck by a second vehicle, a Volkswagen sedan. The pedestrian was declared deceased at the scene. The identity of the victim is unknown at this time. Montgomery County Fire Department is assisting in diverting traffic.The cause of the crash remains under investigation.”


The express lanes of I-270 S are closed again between exit 6, W Montgomery Ave, and Exit 4, Montrose Rd, on Sunday morning following a traffic collision that involves a pedestrian, according to Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services Chief Spokesperson Pete Piringer. MCFRS is on the scene for one adult patient with a traumatic and life threatening injury.

Per Montgomery County Police: “TRAFFIC ADVISORY: The main lanes of southbound 270 between 28 and Montrose Rd. are closed as the result of a traffic collision. Drivers are expected to seek an alternate route. Expect significant delays.”


Per MCPD: At approximately 5:01 a.m., Montgomery County Department of Police 2nd District officers responded to a call for service in the middle travel lane on the ramp of Rockledge Road to check the welfare of an adult male inside of a car.

When officers arrived, they found a lone individual who they believed to be intoxicated and observed a gun on the driver’s lap. They attempted to prevent the occupant from driving away. However, he drove off, heading northbound on I-270. Officers initiated a brief pursuit and the driver crashed on I-270, south of route 28. The driver was ejected from the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene.


UPDATE: Severe Traffic Alert I-270 – All southbound lanes on Interstate 270 are now open at West Montgomery Ave (MD 28). All northbound lanes remain closed at Falls Road (MD 189). Expect major delays and seek alternate route. (OEMHS)

According to Montgomery County Police, “A serious collision has NB lanes of I-270, south of 28 shut down, with two local lanes closed. SB 270 lanes at 28 are also closed. Roads will be closed for an extended period of time. Drivers should seek alternate routes.”


Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) is responding to a call that involves a crash with rollover on the northbound lanes of I-270 between Route 28 and Shady Grove Road, reported at approximately 8:45am on Sunday morning.

According to MCFRS Chief Spokesperson Pete Piringer, the crash has resulted in a person being trapped inside the overturned vehicle. The crash occurred in the main lanes and most lanes were temporarily blocked.


Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) responded to a collision involving an overturned vehicle on outer loop I-495 just after the I-270 spur on Thursday, April 27 around 12:45pm. According to Chief Spokesperson for MCFRS Pete Piringer, two adults were transported to the hospital, including one patient with Priority 2 trauma and one patient with non-life threatening injuries. Drivers should expect residual delays. We will post an update if additional information is available.

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) responded to a vehicle fire on northbound I-270 (prior to Exit 6A MD 28 W Montgomery Ave) on Tuesday, April 25 around 12pm.  According to Chief Spokesperson for MCFRS Pete Piringer, the vehicle involved was semi-trailer truck that was packed full of paper products.  MCFRS units pulled pallets out from the truck and extinguished the smoldering debris. WTOP reports that cleanup is ongoing as of 1:30pm. Drivers should expect residual delays. We will post an update when additional information is available.
