Carnival at Clarksburg Outlets From April 19 to April 30

The Jolly Shows Carnival will be at the Clarksburg Outlets (22705 Clarksburg Road Clarksburg, MD 20871) from April 19 to April 30. There will be over 30 attractions, including carnival rides, games, and food wagons. According to their website, “We are a new generation of carnival operators who strive to be more progressive and professional. We realize that we must produce a premium product for our customer’s hard earned money. Hallie Wells Assistant Principal, Beth F. Thomas, Wins Edward Shirley Award

Per MCPS: Beth F. Thomas, assistant principal at Hallie Wells Middle School, is the 2023 recipient of the Dr. Edward Shirley Award for Excellence in Educational Administration and Supervision. This prestigious award, given by the Montgomery County Association of Administrators and Principals (MCAAP), is presented annually to an administrator or supervisor who exemplifies outstanding leadership and accomplishments in purposeful leadership, instructional or systemwide leadership, human resources development, resource management, interpersonal skills, professional involvement, and community and stakeholder involvement.

In addition to her eight years of service in New York, Thomas has spent most of her educational career in MCPS. Over the last 28 years she has served as a special education teacher, special education resource teacher, alternative I teacher and administrator. In 2006, Thomas became an administrator at James Hubert Blake High School. When Hallie Wells Middle School opened in 2016, she was selected as the assistant principal and has served there since.

Clarksburg, Paint Branch Athletic Directors Win State Honors

Two Montgomery County Athletic Specialist/Directors, Ed Dalton (Clarksburg) and Heather Podosek (Paint Branch) have earned state honors through the Maryland State Athletic Director Association (MSADA).

Per MCPS: Ed Dalton, athletics specialist/athletic director at Clarksburg High School, has been named the Maryland State Athletic Directors Association’s (MSADA’s) 2023 District 2B Athletic Director of the Year. He was selected by all 25 MCPS athletics specialists for the recognition. Heather Podosek, athletics specialist/athletic director at Paint Branch High School, was selected the 2023 MSADA Co-Athletic Director of the Year. They will receive their awards at the state conference banquet on Saturday, April 29.

Former Laurel Police Chief Found Guilty of Attempted 1st-Degree Murder, 1st-Degree Arson and Malicious Burning

Crawford is a former Police Chief for the City of Laurel, where he last served from 2006 until his resignation in 2010. Prior to that, Crawford was Chief of the District Heights Police Department and served as a Major for the Prince George’s County Police Department. Investigators say none of the civilian victims of the fires were connected to Crawford through his law enforcement career.

Manslaughter Conviction in Shooting Death of 23-Year-Old in Clarksburg Neighborhood

According to the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office, “in the Circuit Court for Montgomery County, MD, before the Honorable Kevin Hessler, a jury has found defendant, Rodjaun Neal-Williams, 21 of Clarksburg, guilty of Voluntary Manslaughter and Use of Firearm in Commission of a Crime of Violence for the death of 23-year-old Javon Gordon of Boyds. The jury returned the verdict on Tuesday, March 7^th, 2023. Defendant, Neal-Williams, faces a maximum of 30 years in prison. A sentencing hearing is scheduled before Judge Hessler on May 31^st at 1:30 p.m.

This stems from an incident on April 13, 2021, on the 12900 block of Ethel Rose Way in Boyds. The defendant who was 19-years old at the time, was a passenger in a vehicle that pulled up to small group of individuals in the street. There was an altercation between Neal-Williams and Gordon while Neal-Williams was seated inside of the vehicle, and he fired a handgun, killing Gordon.”

Police and Family Concerned For Missing Clarksburg Woman

Miller was last seen on Friday, February 3, 2023, at approximately 11 a.m., in the 12600 block of Granite Rock Road. Miller is approximately 5-feet, 10-inches tall and weighs 165 pounds. She has brown eyes and brown hair. She was last seen wearing a burgundy sweater and blue jeans. Police and family are concerned for her welfare.

Anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of Alexandra Faith Miller is asked to call the police non-emergency number at (301) 279-8000 (24-hour line). Callers may remain anonymous.

MCFRS Respond to Little Bennett Campground After Person Pinned Between Vehicle and Tree

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) responded to Little Bennett Campground in the 23700 block of Frederick Rd. in Clarksburg for the report of an injured person on Saturday afternoon. According to Chief Spokesperson for MCFRS Pete Piringer, one person (adult) was pinned between a vehicle and a tree after a vehicle inadvertently rolled backwards. Nearby campers were able to assist the person prior to EMS arrival. One adult was transported to to the hospital with Priority 2, non-life threatening injuries. We will post an update when additional information is available.

Clarksburg: Vehicle Fire in Garage Causes ~$75K in Damage

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) were called to the scene of a vehicle fire in the garage of an ‘end of the row’ townhome on Clarksburg Square Rd shortly before 2pm on Sunday afternoon.

According to MCFRS Chief Spokesperson Pete Piringer, the fire started in the vehicle, which was located in the garage. The fire remained contained to the garage because the garage door and the door from the garage leading into the home remained closed. The occupants of the home called 911 after smelling smoke. There were no sprinklers in the garage and not enough smoke in the home to activate the detector. The cause was likely a mechanical vehicle malfunction after use. Damage is estimated at approximately $75K and there were no injuries and no displacement.

Family Forum on Fentanyl to Be Held Jan. 28 at Clarksburg High School

In partnership with MCPS, Montgomery Goes Purple is hosting a Family Forum on Fentanyl and life-saving Narcan training from 9:30–11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 28, at Clarksburg High School. Panelists will share important information for families on the dangers and prevalence of fentanyl; prevention tools and protective factors for students, and resources for treatment when needed. This event will be a family discussion about what you need to know about this deadly drug, including Narcan training and distribution of Narcan kits to help reverse an overdose. The Community Opioid Prevention & Education (C.O.P.E.) trailer (a mock teen bedroom) will be available for tours to learn signs of substance use. There will also be a resource fair. Students can earn two Student Service Learning (SSL) hours for attending this event.

The event will be held in the cafeteria at Clarksburg, located at 22500 Wims Road in Clarksburg. RSVP to attend. In addition, be sure to tune in to a press conference set for 3 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 19. MCPS leaders, county health and law enforcement leaders, and community partners will hold a news conference to raise awareness about the deadly trend of fentanyl use and accidental overdoses.
