Per Montgomery County: The Montgomery County Office of Community Partnership (OCP) and the Asian American Health Initiative (AAHI) will host the second annual Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month celebration from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. on Sunday, May 21, at Seneca Valley High School in Germantown. Per MCPD: The Montgomery County Department of Police – Collision Reconstruction Unit (CRU) is investigating a serious pedestrian collision that occurred on Tuesday, May 9, 2023. At approximately 8:53 p.m., 5th District officers and Montgomery County Fire Rescue personnel responded to the area of Wisteria Dr. and Great Seneca Hwy. for the report of a traffic collision involving a pedestrian.
The preliminary investigation by detectives has determined that a black Acura TSX was traveling northbound on Wisteria Drive, when for reasons still under investigation, the driver struck the 15-year-old male victim, who was crossing the roadway in a westbound direction. The victim was transported to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Last summer we let you know that KPOT Korean BBQ & Hot Pot will be opening a second MoCo location, in Germantown, following the 2018 opening of its Rockville location (the Rockville location is not associated with the Germantown location). KPot has taken over the space previously occupied by Honey Pig at 19727 Frederick Rd #1337. Honey Pig closed permanently in November of 2021 after five years at the location. KPOT has announced that it will officially open on Sunday, May 14th, via a sign on its door (photo below).
According to KPot, the restaurant was started by four friends from different backgrounds who decided to share their mixed cuisine over the same table. KPot combines traditional Asian hot pot with Korean BBQ flavors. Hot pot, also known as “soup-food” or “steamboat,” is a communal pot of simmering broth that is stuffed with raw ingredients like meat and vegetables to cook in the pot.
Montgomery County Police issued a press release Wednesday with additional information on a fatal single-vehicle collision that occurred early Tuesday morning in Germantown. The decedent, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, has been identified as 19-year-old Samuel Isaac Castaneda, of Germantown. According to a GoFundMe launched to help with funeral expenses, “Sam was the light of his families lives- full of jokes and fun and always keeping the party going. If you knew Sam, you know exactly the type of guy he was. He was and will continue to be amazing.” Castaneda graduated in the top 25 of his class at Northwest High School in 2021.

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) responded to a collision involving a pedestrian Tuesday night in Germantown. According to Chief Spokesperson for MCFRS Pete Piringer, a juvenile was transported to the hospital with Priority 1 traumatic injury after being struck by a vehicle near Seneca Valley High School. Montgomery County Police tweeted the following at 9:22pm: “Wisteria Dr. is closed in both directions between Great Seneca Hwy. and Circle Gate Dr. as the result of a traffic collision. Drivers are advised to seek an alternate route. Expect significant delays.”

Per Montgomery County: Montgomery County’s 26th Juneteenth Celebration will be held from noon-10 p.m. at the BlackRock Center for the Arts in Germantown on Saturday, June 17. This year’s theme, “Journey to Freedom: Acknowledge, Educate, and Celebrate” will showcase tracing the African American struggle for freedom through education, art, dance, music and honoring elders.
The celebration weekend will begin at 7 p.m. on Friday, June 16, at BlackRock when County Executive Marc Elrich leads ceremonies to honor the 2023 winners of the County’s African American Living Legends Awards. The awards honor individuals who are 75 or older and have dedicated their lives to service, advocacy and selfless acts of kindness to their community. BlackRock Center for the Arts is located at 12901 Town Commons Dr. in Germantown.
Montgomery County Police are investigating a fatal single-vehicle collision that occurred on Clopper Road between Waring Station Road and Game Preserve Road early Tuesday morning. According to MCPD, “At approximately 12:37 a.m., on Tuesday, May 9, 2023, a Honda was traveling north on Clopper Rd., when for reasons still under investigation, it left the roadway and struck a utility pole. The adult male driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
For the third year, students at Longview School, in Germantown, participated in the TRYathlon, a whole school event celebrating the hard work and dedication of its students with complex physical and intellectual disabilities. Sixty-six students cycled, walked and performed other mobility skills with the help of their adaptive equipment, teachers, therapists and support staff. Longview also welcomed many parents and students from nearby Spark M. Matsunaga Elementary School, who celebrated the great work and dedication of students. The event concluded with a medal ceremony.
Longview was originally built in 1950 in Gaithersburg, MD. It opened as one of the first all black schools in Montgomery County and was named the Emory Grove Consolidated Colored Elementary School. The renaming committee selected Longview to represent the “long” distance traveled by the students and the beautiful view seen from the school (Sugarloaf Mountain off in the distance). The school housed a general education population until 1961 when Longview became a special education school for children with disabilities. The original building is still in use and is now known as the Emory Grove Center. In 2001, Longview moved to its current site in Germantown, Maryland.
Carmen’s Italian Ice opens today at the Clarksburg Market at 23329 Frederick Rd. The market will have two walk up windows and several outdoor tables. According to Carmen’s owner Jason Mandler, the market will have two custard machines and 8-10 Italian ice flavors and the menu will consist primarily of ices, custards, gelatis, and shakes. Hours of operation today will be 2pm-9pm. The Clarksburg Market is a gas station/convenience store that also serves breakfast, hot and cold deli sandwiches, as well as pupusas and tacos. Carmen’s Italian Ice has locations in Rockville and Olney.
