“Rally to Protect our Neighborhoods” This Saturday in Germantown

The “Rally to Protect our Neighborhoods” will take place Saturday, April 30 from 12-2pm at the BlackRock Center for the Arts in Germantown. The event will be hosted by Councilmember Craig Rice (District 2), Councilmember Sidney Katz (District 3) and Greg Wims of the Upcounty Regional Services Center.

The event is being run in conjunction with the ‘Justice for Jai’lyn Rally’, in honor of 17-year-old Jai’lyn Jones, who was murdered in Germantown back in January. Jai’lyn was a Germantown resident and a senior at Northwest High School. His body was found brutally stabbed and mutilated. As of today, no arrests have been made and the case remains active.

The Lancaster County Dutch Market is Germantown is hosting its first outdoor pig roast and chicken barbecue from today until Saturday at 12623 Wisteria Drive in Germantown.. Hours today, Thursday, April 28th, run until 6pm. Friday, April 29th goes from 9am until 7pm and Saturday, April 30th goes from 9am until 3pm.

19-Year-Old Germantown Man Fatally Shot By Secret Service Officers at Residence of Peruvian Embassy Ambassador After Report of Burglary in Progress

A 19 year old Germantown man, identified as Gordon Casey, was fatally shot by United States Secret Service officers following a call for a burglary in progress on Wednesday, April 20th at the residence of a Peruvian Embassy Ambassador in the 3000 block of Garrison Street, NW DC.

According to a press release from the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD), the Secret Service officers arrived to find multiple broken windows and located Casey, armed with a metal pole, in the backyard of the residence. Officers gave multiple commands to Gordon to drop the weapon. One USSS officer discharged their department issued electronic control device (ECD) towards the suspect, but the device did not take effect on the suspect. Two additional USSS officers discharged their service pistols striking the suspect. After lifesaving efforts, Casey was pronounced deceased.

Traffic: Clarksburg Rd Closed Due to Vehicle Fire

Clarksburg Road is closed between Barnesville Road and Ridge Oak Drive due to a vehicle fire, according to Chief Spokesperson for Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Pete Piringer. MCFRS responded to a fully engulfed DHL truck Monday night around 7:30pm. The delivery truck was empty and was disabled with mechanical issues.

The fire has been extinguished and there were no injuries reported. Drivers are advised to seek alternate routes and expect delays. We will post an update when more information becomes available.

Gaithersburg, MD – Detectives from the Montgomery County Police – Major Crimes Division are currently investigating the April 22 homicide that occurred in Germantown. On Friday, April 22, 2022, at approximately 10:50 p.m., Montgomery County Police – 5^th District officers responded to the 19500 block of Gunners Branch Road for the report of a shooting that just occurred.

Two Children in Germantown Struck and Seriously Injured By Drivers in Separate Incidents

Two children were struck by drivers in two separate locations in Germantown Friday afternoon, according to Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services PIO Pete Piringer.

The incidents occurred in close proximity (time & geography) on the 12200 block of Eagles Nest Ct. and the 18800 block of Waring Station Rd., near Roberto Clemente Middle School.

Germantown: U.S. Mint Holds Event at Sally K. Ride Elementary to Celebrate the Release of the Sally Ride Quarter

The United States Mint has added NASA Astronaut Sally Ride to its “American Women Quarters” program. An event was held yesterday, April 21, at 10 a.m. at Dr. Sally K. Ride Elementary School in Germantown to celebrate the release of the Dr. Sally Ride Quarter.

What Was There Before The Maryland Soccerplex?

Some grew up with the Maryland Soccerplex being there as far back as they can remember, but for those of us who were around and remember the times before 1999, we know that something else was there before. The following history (and featured photo), dating back to 1913, comes from the King Barn Dairy MOOseum in Boyds:

In 1913 James King purchased a 350 acre farm in between Germantown and Boyds, Maryland from the Lyddane family, and moved in with his new bride, Macie. Over time, as their family grew, the farm flourished as part of the dairy boom that brought wealth to Montgomery County in the Twentieth Century.

Atzerodt was arrested in Germantown, the town where he had spent many years as a boy. How he got involved with the Booth gang and why he ended up back in Germantown is a compelling story.

Construction Update of The Fairchild Apartments (Near IHOP, Señor Tequilas, etc.) in Germantown

Construction continues at the Fairchild Property on Century Blvd in Germantown in the area surrounded by what is mainly comprised of one-story pad-site restaurant uses (IHOP, Red Robin, Señor Tequilas), and surface parking lots.

Germantown: DSW Now Open in Milestone Shopping Center

DSW is now open at 20900-B Frederick Road in the Milestone Shopping Center in Germantown. The DSW at 12922 Middlebrook Road in Germantown closed on April 10.

The new DSW is taking over the location that was home to Modell’s. The store sells designer and name brand shoes as well as fashion accessories. The company now has three Montgomery County stores, with the other locations in Bethesda and Silver Spring. We were initially told there were no plans to close the previous Germantown location, but that has apparently changed.
