Noodles & Friends and Gogi Friends Korean BBQ have opened inside of the food court at New Grand Mart supermarket at 13069 Wisteria Drive in the Germantown Plaza shopping center. Additional vendors, including Tous les Jours (bakery) and Fortune Cha (bubble tea and dessert) are expected to open by the end of July. Menu items at Noodles & Friends include JjaJang (noodles with blackbean sauce), Jjampong (seafood soup), KimChi fried rice, and Shrimp Tangsu. Menu items at Gogi Friends includes BulGogi, Bibim Bap, Ramyeon noodles, and dumpling soup.

New Grand Mart opened in the space previously occupied by Lotte Plaza on June 8th. According to its website, “New Grand Mart carries a variety of fresh produce, fish, meats, and ethnic specialty items that is hard for other markets to match.”

Situational Awareness: Private Fireworks Displays in Three Different Areas Tonight in MoCo

Three private fireworks displays will take place in Montgomery County tonight (Friday, June 30th). The events will take place at at Manor Country Club (located at 14901 Carrolton Road in Rockville), Argyle Country Club (located at 14600 Argyle Club Rd in Silver Spring), and Norbeck Country Club (17200 Cashell Rd in Rockville, near Olney).

According to Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services Chief Spokesperson Pete Piringer, the clubs are hosting a ‘private/permitted event’ which will include a fireworks display & aerial explosions. The events are scheduled to start between 9pm and 9:30pm and last between 15 and 30 minutes. While the events are private, the fireworks will be visible in the surrounding areas.

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service Chief Scott Goldstein Retires After 8 Years Leading the Department; John Kinsley to Serve as Acting Fire Chief Until New Leader is Selected

MCFRS serves and protects over one million residents across five hundred square miles. Annually, MCFRS responds to over 130,000 calls and operates with an annual budget in excess of $260 million.

The Montgomery County Government is currently interviewing candidates to permanently replace Chief Goldstein. MCFRS Human Resources Division Chief John Kinsley will serve as Interim Fire Chief until a new MCFRS Chief is nominated for County Council confirmation. Kinsley has been with MCFRS for 37 years. He is also credentialed by the Commission on Fire Accreditation International as a Chief Fire Officer.

Council Statement Reaffirming Montgomery County Council’s Commitment to the Values of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

Per Montgomery County: Today, the Montgomery County Council issued the following statement reaffirming its commitment to the values of diversity, equity and inclusion for all people, despite the recent U.S. Supreme Court’s rulings to restrict affirmative action in college admissions for students of color and limit LGBTQ+ protections.

Yesterday’s U.S. Supreme Court ruling in Students for Fair Admissions v. Harvard overturned the 2003 landmark ruling in Grutter v. Bollinger, which established that race could be considered as a factor in the college admissions process because universities had a compelling interest in maintaining diverse campuses. Today, the court ruled in favor of a web designer who refused to create websites for same-sex weddings.

Police and Family Concerned for Missing 14-Year-Old

Per MCPD: Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – Special Victims Investigations Division (SVID) are asking for the public’s assistance in locating Christopher Calderon, a missing 14-year-old from Silver Spring.

Christopher Calderon was last seen on the morning of Thursday, June 29, 2023, in the 1700 block of Mount Pisgah Lane. Christopher is approximately 5-feet, 6-inches tall and weighs 135 pounds. He has brown eyes and black hair. He was last seen wearing all black clothing and black Crocs. He has braces with blue bands. Police and family are concerned for his welfare.

Recreational Cannabis Information: A Message from Montgomery County Public Schools

Please remember that just because a substance is legal, does not mean it is safe. Alcohol, tobacco products, and cannabis pose greater potential harms to young people, whose brains and judgment are still developing. Due to the dangers of underage use, these products remain illegal for individuals under 21 years old.

For staff members, alcohol and cannabis use may impair work performance or judgment, and is not permitted during the workday, or at school sponsored activities and events that occur outside of the regularly scheduled workday. This behavior does not align with MCPS’ commitment to student safety and professional excellence and is a violation of the Employee Code of Conduct. Federal law requires public schools receiving federal funds to be drug-free settings, and additional federal restrictions on substance use for commercial vehicle drivers apply to our transportation staff.

Montgomery Parks Honored For Commitment to People with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities

Montgomery Parks Program Access Office has received a Community Inclusion Award from the ARC of Montgomery County, in recognition of its commitment to supporting people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). The ARC is the largest organization in the world for people with IDD and their families. Each year the Montgomery County chapter holds a Community, Volunteer and Employee Awards Ceremony to honor those who show a strong commitment to connecting people of all ages and abilities with their communities.

“It is an honor to be recognized for our efforts to support people of all abilities in building active and fulfilling lives,” said Montgomery Parks Director Mike Riley. “Our Program Access Office is a dedicated team of inclusion specialists working hard to make parks and programs easily accessible for everyone.” Montgomery Parks’ Program Access office ensures that individuals with disabilities are welcomed to participate in enjoyable leisure-time activities in accessible places and programs. They accomplish this by offering enhanced staff-to-participant ratio at programs, providing inclusion and disability training for staff, providing adaptive equipment at various park locations, and working with event planners to ensure events are accessible to the public.

MCPS Transportation Employees Enter Guilty Pleas for Misconduct in Office and Theft Scheme

From the Office of the Montgomery County State’s Attorney: Today in the Circuit Court for Montgomery County, MD, before the Honorable Michael McAuliffe, defendant, Todd Michael Watkins, 56, of Jefferson, MD, pleaded guilty to one count of the misdemeanor charge of misconduct in office. A sentencing hearing is scheduled for September 11^th, 2023 at 9:30 a.m.

The defendant, Watkins, was appointed Director of the Montgomery County Public Schools Department of Transportation in 2009. Beginning in at least 2016 and continuing into September 2021, the defendant failed to properly manage the contract for the purchases of school buses and the use of purchasing cards in his department such that Charles Ewald, the Assistant Director of the Department of Transportation, was able to steal over $320,000.

Groundbreaking Ceremony Held for New 6th District Police Station in Gaithersburg

Per Montgomery County:

Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich and County Council President Evan Glass joined the ceremonies on June 29 as the County broke ground on a new 6th District Police Station at 222 Paramount Park Drive in Gaithersburg. Serving the Gaithersburg and Montgomery Village communities, the new 6th District Police Station will replace an outdated facility with a new, sustainably designed energy-efficient building scheduled to open in spring 2025.

Laytonsville Independence Day Celebration With View of Fireworks on July 3rd

The Family Room Laytonsville will be hosting “The Fourth at the Family Room”’on Monday, July 3rd. Nearby Montgomery Country Club will be setting off their fireworks on Monday, July 3rd and the display can be seen from the parking lot of The Family Room (6820 Olney Laytonsville Rd), featuring “The Best Burger in the DMV” Steeze Burger.

The fireworks display begins at 9:15pm, but it is advised to arrive early to secure your spot. Per The Family Room: “We will be open late on July 3rd for ice cream, Steezeburgers and local fireworks. @steeze.burger will be serving burgers starting at 5p until they sellout! 🍔 We will also have live music from local artist @katekeeleymusic starting at 6:30p!
