Healthy baby boy Conrad was born on the shoulder of 270N on May 25 at 5:51 PM. Dad reports mom and baby are doing great (photos below).

Heading to the hospital, the paramedics from Rockville Station 23 delivered the baby near exit 9, Sam Eig Highway. Mom and dad report the delivery was very quick and unexpected. Mom’s water broke as the ambulance pulled into their driveway and 20 minutes later a healthy 7lb 8oz, 20 inch baby Conrad made his entrance into the world. Mom and baby are receiving care at Holy Cross Germantown.


Crime

Per MCPD: Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – 5th District Patrol Investigations Unit are investigating a first-degree assault on a Montgomery County Police officer that occurred on Thursday, April 27, 2023, in the parking lot of the Wegmans at 20600 Seneca Meadows Parkway in Germantown. Detectives have released photos of the male suspect and are asking for the public’s assistance in identifying him.

At approximately 2:07 p.m., 5th District officers responded to the location for the report of a theft in progress.  The investigation by detectives has revealed that the suspect entered the store, placed merchandise in a cart and exited the store without paying. The suspect then walked across the street to the parking garage where officers approached him. The suspect quickly ran towards his vehicle. Officers attempted to prevent the suspect from getting in the vehicle, but they were unsuccessful. The suspect got in the vehicle and drove away, striking an officer with the driver side of the vehicle.

Per MCPD: Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – Special Victims Investigations (SVID) are asking for the public’s assistance in locating Anthony Amaya Ramos, a missing 16-year-old from Wheaton.  Anthony was last seen on Thursday, May 25, 2023, at approximately 7:15 a.m., in the 2300 block of Blueridge Avenue.  Anthony is approximately 5-feet, 5-inches tall and weighs 125 pounds. He has black hair and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing a long sleeve gray shirt, gray pants and black sneakers.

Per MCPD: Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – Special Victims Investigations (SVID) are asking for the public’s assistance in locating Hanan Al-Saghir, a missing 15-year-old from Gaithersburg.  Hanan was last seen on Thursday, May 25, 2023, at approximately 7 a.m., in the 19600 block of Goshen Road.  Hanan is approximately 5-feet, 3-inches tall and weighs 110 pounds. She has brown hair and brown eyes. It is unknown what clothing she was last seen wearing.

Clarksburg

MoCo Pride

Per Montgomery County: Montgomery County Council President Evan Glass (At-Large) announced a series of LGBTQ+ Pride Month events throughout the month of June. Events include a Pride flag raising outside the Executive Office Building in Rockville, Pride Family Day at Glen Echo Park and a Pride youth writing competition.

“I’m excited to host Montgomery County’s fifth annual LGBTQ+ Pride month events,” said Council President Evan Glass. “This is a time for celebration, reflection and unity. Today, the rights of LGBTQ+ Americans are under relentless attack. Members of the LGBTQ+ community — especially people of color and trans people — continue to face discrimination and efforts to undermine their human rights. As we continue our struggle for greater civil rights and liberties, Pride Month is a time to not only reflect on our progress but to focus on the work ahead.”


Crime

Per MCPD: Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – Major Crimes Division are investigating an armed robbery of a Dunkin Donuts that occurred on Thursday, May 18, 2023. Detectives have released surveillance video of the suspect and are asking for the public’s assistance in identifying him.

The initial investigation has revealed that an unknown suspect entered a Dunkin Donuts in the 4300 block of Aspen Hill Road. The suspect walked up to the counter, displayed a box cutter and demanded money. When the employee began to back away from the counter, the suspect leaped over the counter and threatened the employee with a large knife he had in his waistband. The suspect then removed the cash boxes from the registers and left the scene.   The suspect is described as a White or Hispanic male, approximately 40-years-old, 5-feet tall, with a thin build. He was wearing a white baseball hat, black jacket, light colored pants and tan work boots. He also had a white t-shirt around his face.


Ashton

Sam Dickey, a senior at Sherwood High School, was awarded the $180,000 Navy ROTC Scholarship (Marine option) on Thursday, May 25th. Rockville Marines announced yesterday, “Today, Sam is one of the hand selected few who have been awarded the $180,000 NROTC Scholarship (Marine Option)!! What an awesome way to represent your family and Sherwood High School! Thank you for all of your hard work and dedication!”

Per the NROTC: The purpose of the Navy ROTC Program is to educate and train qualified young men and women for service as commissioned officers in the Navy’s unrestricted line, the Navy Nurse Corps and the Marine Corps. As the largest single source of Navy and Marine Corps officers, the Navy ROTC Scholarship Program plays an important role in preparing mature young men and women for leadership and management positions in an increasingly technical Navy and Marine Corps.


Bethesda

Chicken on the Run, a Peruvian chicken restaurant located 4933 St Elmo Ave in Bethesda, has reopened in the same location after a closure that lasted over a year. The restaurant announced what seemed to be a permanent closure in April 2022, writing “SORRY, AFTER MORE THAN 20 YEARS IN BUSINESS WE ARE CLOSING OUR BUSINESS DUE TO THE LANDLORD NOT RENEWING OUR LEASE.”

The restaurant first opened its doors in 2002 and reopened earlier this month. Chicken on the Run opens at 11am daily and closes at 9pm every day except for Sundays, when it closes at 7:30pm.


Education

Graduation Ceremonies Kick Off May 31: Nearly 12,000 MCPS students will begin receiving their diplomas during commencement ceremonies between Wednesday, May 31, and Thursday, June 15. Graduation ceremonies will take place on individual high school campuses, at DAR Constitution Hall in Washington, D.C., and on the campuses of Mount St. Mary’s University and the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.

This year’s keynote speakers include Tony Award-winning actor Myles Frost, Maryland Lt. Gov. Aruna Miller, husband-and-wife journalists Peter Baker of The New York Times and Susan Glasser of The New Yorker, former University of Maryland and NBA star Walt Williams, author and television producer George Pelecanos, and more. MCPS

Per MCPS: Wheaton High School held its first Unified Field Day on May 23 in honor of Sarah Gilbert, a former Learning for Independence (LFI) student who unexpectedly passed away last summer. The event was named Gilbert Games in her honor. The event was planned and executed by Wheaton High School staff members in conjunction with Albert Einstein, John F. Kennedy and Springbrook and Wheaton high schools. More than 100 students from all four schools attended (video below).

Leadership students coached students from the LFI program, which is designed for students with complex learning and cognitive needs, including mild to moderate intellectual disabilities, and the School Community-based (SCB) programs, which includes students with severe or profound intellectual disabilities and/or multiple disabilities. Students from the extensions program, which is a program that includes students with the same disabilities in need of additional behavioral support, also participated.
