MCDCC Nominates Bernice Mireku-North for D14 Delegate

Montgomery County Democratic Central Committee announces the selection of Bernice D. Mireku-­‐North to fill the unexpired term within the 14th General Assembly legislative district created by the resignation of outgoing Delegate Eric Luedtke. Luedtke resigned effective January 2 to join the incoming Moore-­‐Miller Administration as Chief Legislative Officer. The Committee’s selection serves as a recommendation to be delivered to Governor Hogan, who must confirm the appointment.

The MCDCC would like to thank all of the candidates who applied for the District 14 delegate seat. Their passion, desire and commitment to serve the district’s residents demonstrates the energy and dedication found throughout Montgomery County for public service. The Committee will be sending its recommendation to Governor Hogan tonight, January 3, and asks that the Governor confirm the nomination as expeditiously possible for the nominee to be sworn-­‐in in time for the upcoming legislative session to begin.

Detectives From Special Investigations Unit are Asking For Public’s Assistance in Locating Missing 15-Year Old

Per MCPD: Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – Special Victims Investigations Division (SVID) are asking for the public’s assistance in locating a missing 15-year-old from Rockville. Jacqueline Diaz was last seen on Friday, December 30, 2022, in the 5900 block of Lemay Rd. Diaz is approximately 5-feet, 4-inches tall and weighs 120 pounds. She has brown eyes, brown hair and a nose piercing. It is unknown what she was last seen wearing. Police and family are concerned for her welfare.

Anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of Jacqueline Diaz is asked to call the police non-emergency number at (301) 279-8000 (24-hour line) or the Special Victims Investigations Division at (240) 773-5400. Callers may remain anonymous.

Bath & Body Works in Gaithersburg to Close *Soon* (Updated)

Updated on Saturday, January 7th to reflect the closing date has been pushed back.

The Bath & Body Works location inside of Lakeforest Mall in Gaithersburg was scheduled to close this Saturday, January 7, but that has been pushed back according to associates at the store. The new closing date is currently not available, but staff wanted customers to know that there are not any closing sales at the store at the moment. A new Bath & Body Works location will be opening in Gaithersburg’s Downtown Crown later this month. The new store will be located at 130 Crown Park Ave, in the location that was formerly home to Hair Cuttery, in between ZAGG and Warby Parker. Employees from this location will be transferred to the Germantown store at 20934 Frederick Rd.

Dave & Buster’s Co-Founder James “Buster” Corley Has Died

Dave & Buster’s co-founder James “Buster” Corley has died by suicide, according to a report by CBS News.  Dave & Busters, which has a half video arcade and half full service restaurant/bar concept, opened its first location in 1982 and currently has over 150 locations in the US and Canada. Dave & Busters has MoCo locations at 9811 Washingtonian Blvd in Gaithersburg and 8661 Colesville Rd in Silver Spring.

“His pioneering spirit and steadfast belief that ‘everybody is somebody’ set the foundation for bringing food and games to millions of Dave & Buster’s guests over the past 40 years,” the statement reads. “Buster’s passion for hospitality, his demand for excellence, and the deep care he had for his team members were unparalleled. Our hearts go out to his family at this difficult time and while we will miss his wise counsel and his easy laugh, the legacy he and Dave built endures,” the company said in a statement to CBS News.

MCPS Teachers to Help Inform Future Instructional Technologies

A device showcase for Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) teachers is being held Friday, Jan. 6. The showcase will inform future purchases and align new technologies with classroom needs. Teachers can test different devices and share input on what technology devices and features are most important to them.

WHAT: Demonstration and presentation for MCPS teachers to gather interest and help inform future technology acquisition that supports teaching and learning across the district. Including a focus on technologies that support science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM) learning. The showcase will provide hands-on interactive experiences, including drone flights, programming different robots, an esports station, green screen media development, 3D modeling and printing, and more.

Weapons Charges For Man Caught Attempting to Illegally Hunt Deer in Clarksburg

On the night of Monday, January 2nd, while on patrol for illegal hunting in the area of Little Bennett Regional Park in Clarksburg, a car was observed spotlighting deer. Park Police officers stopped the car, and found that one occupant was illegally possessing a hand gun. The man was charged with numerous Maryland Department of Natural Resources offenses and weapons charges.

Urban Winery Broken Into on New Year’s Eve

The Urban Winery at 2315 Stewart Ave in Silver Spring was broken into on New Year’s Eve, according to posts on the winery’s social media pages.  Property was taken and police are investigating. Per Urban Winery:  “Everyone on our Urban Winery team and family want to thank MOCO Police for their assistance with our investigation in to our New Year Eve robbery and vandalism at the Urban Winery of Silver Spring. Macy’s to Close Lakeforest Store; Target Date of 2024 for Mall Demolition and New Construction

Macy’s confirmed to Axios on Wednesday that it will close additional stores in 2023, including its Lakeforest Mall location at 701 Russell Ave in Gaithersburg. According to Axios, a clearance sale will begin at some point in January and run for approximately eight to 12 weeks, Macy’s said. This was one of the largest hurdles in order for WRS Inc. to reach its target date of 2024 for demolition of the mall and the start of new construction. A more specific date will be available after the approval of sketch plans. The City of Gaithersburg Joint Planning Commission/Mayor and City Council Hearing on the plan is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2023 at at City Hall, 31 S. Summit Avenue, Gaithersburg, MD 20877

WRS purchased the core, ponds, and forest conservation of the mall back in 2019 and added the four anchor sites earlier this year, spending a total of $75 million to acquire Lakeforest Mall. At a meeting in October, WRS announced that they have worked with the City of Gaithersburg since March and plan to submit their zoning application and sketch plan in the next couple weeks. As mentioned above, the target date for demolition of the mall and the start of new construction is currently 2024, with a more specific date to come after the approval of sketch plans. The sketch plan requires at least 35% “green space” and WRS stated that initial sketches are currently at a little more than 35%. Green space is defined as trees, grass, walking/biking areas, etc.

Police Investigating Attempted Burglary of Preschool on Christmas Day

Per MCPD: Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – 4th District Investigative Section are investigating an attempted burglary that occurred on Friday, December 25, 2022, at the Shomrai Emunah Preschool in the 800 block of University Boulevard West in Silver Spring. Detectives have released surveillance photos of the adult male suspect and his vehicle, and are asking for the public’s assistance in identifying them

On Tuesday, December 27, 2022, at approximately 2:42 p.m., 4th District officers responded to the location for the report of an attempted burglary. Detectives determined that on Friday, December 25, 2022, at approximately 8:12 p.m., the suspect arrived at the preschool in a silver Acura Sedan, attempted to force entry and left the scene in the Acura.

First 100 Customers at Renovated Derwood Wendy’s Could Get Free Food For a Year

The first 100 customers at the renovated Wendy’s in Derwood could receive free food for a year. The renovated Wendy’s location at 15807 Frederick Rd will reopen on Saturday, January 28th. As the fast food chain did with its 18425 Woodfield Rd restaurant in Gaithersburg, they’ll give away 100 VIP ticket to those 16 and older and present in line at 10:30am when the dining room opens (a purchase is necessary to be considered for a card). Anyone who gets a VIP ticket will be able to come back to the store once a week for a year to receive a free sandwich, salad, or breakfast biscuit.

Beyond MoCo: Dog Haus Biergarten is Opening a College Park Location

Back in May, Dog Haus announced that the company has executed a development agreement with local franchisees Faizan and Adila Khan to to open 15 new Dog Haus locations over the next five years. Cities listed include Annapolis, Baltimore, Columbia, Frederick and Germantown.  No specific information has been released on dates and locations, but now we know that a new College Park location will be opening soon will open in the new City Hall complex at 7401 Baltimore Ave.

Faizan Khan currently franchises three MoCo Dog Haus locations in Bethesda, Gaithersburg and Silver Spring. “We’re thrilled to see Faizan and Adila parlay their success with Dog Haus into expanding throughout the entire state of Maryland,” said Dog Haus Director of Franchise Development Erik Hartung in a press release. “Faizan has been a highly accomplished franchisee with Dog Haus by entering the restaurant industry with an incredibly unique, effective business strategy. We can’t wait to see this growth unfold and bring our one-of-a-kind creations to more markets throughout this great state!”
