Virtual Meeting February 17th About Upcoming Connecticut Avenue, Jones Bridge Road Project

On Wednesday, February 17th, at 6PM, the Maryland State Highway Administration is hosting a virtual information meeting about an upcoming intersection reconfiguration project on MD-185 (Connecticut Avenue) at Jones Bridge Road and Kensington Parkway in Chevy Chase.

The project will include widening Jones Bridge Road to accommodate an additional left turn lane from eastbound Jones Bridge Road to northbound MD 185.

Pedestrian safety improvements will include a new pedestrian refuge island in the median of Jones Bridge Road on the eastern side of the intersection, as well as a new shared-use path along Jones Bridge Road between Platt Ridge Drive and North Chevy Chase Elementary School.

On the southwest corner of the intersection, crews will remove the channelized right-turn lane in order to improve pedestrian safety by slowing turning drivers.

Project construction is scheduled to begin later this Spring, and be completed in 2023.

The virtual project meeting on Wednesday February 17th, at 6PM will be livestreamed online. A recording of the livestream will be posted on the project webpage, where further details about the project are also available.

Peter Rosenberg, a MoCo Native, is Now a WWE Champion

Peter Rosenberg, 41, grew up in Chevy Chase and graduated from B-CC. He is also a University of Maryland alumni and has been a local DJ at local stations such as WPGC, WHFS, and WJFK.

In 2007 he was hired by Hot 97 in New York, where he hosts the morning show. Rosenberg has also worked for the WWE for the last few years and is the host of many podcasts. His mom was even an MCPS teacher!

Last night may have been his biggest moment, however, as he pinned R-Truth for WWE’s 24/7 championship after distracting the wrestler and delivering a low blow prior to the pin.

Though his victory may be tainted, he is currently the champ.

While you’re here, check out Vince McMahon’s former home in Montgomery Village that was recently sold.

Chevy Chase Giant Gas Station

Armed Carjacking at Chevy Chase Gas Station

Around 8:20PM Thursday, an armed carjacking was reported at the Giant Gas Station at 8500 Connecticut Avenue, just north of Chevy Chase Lake Drive and the future Purple Line.

Montgomery County Police 2nd District units responded and determined that a driver was approached by a suspect who pulled a gun and demanded the victim’s car. A black Audi A3 was stolen.

Montgomery County Police Robbery Section Detectives are joining the investigation as this incident involved a weapon.

A 2007 Saturn Aura was stolen at the Carroll Motor Fuels Gas Station just across Connecticut Avenue back in November. While that incident may seem similar, it was much less brazen as it was a theft of a running/unlocked vehicle, without a confrontation or weapon involved.

Home Alone’s MoCo Connection

Home Alone is considered one of the all-time greats when it comes to Christmas movies. If you needed more reason to enjoy the series of movies, we’re going to let you know about the MoCo connection for two of its stars– Daniel Stern and the late John Heard.

Daniel Stern, who played Marv– one half of the “Sticky Bandits” along with Joe Pesci, grew up in Bethesda and attended Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School. Though he dropped out of school to move to New York to pursue his acting career, Stern starred in several theater productions at B-CC. John Heard played the role of Peter McCallister, the father of protagonist Kevin McCallister. Heard grew up in nearby DC and came back to attend Catholic University after going to High School in Massachusetts. As an adult, his parents lived in Chevy Chase and Heard would spend a lot of time in the area. Sadly, Heard passed away back in 2017.

We learned today that Mazza Gallerie in Friendship Heights has been put up for auction as a foreclosure. As first reported by the Washington Business Journal and Bisnow Washington, the owner of the property estimates to have lost around $533 million in revenue due to the current COVID crisis.

Mazza Gallerie, located in Friendship Heights, is technically on the Washington, DC side of town. Currently, the stores in the mall include Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, TJ Maxx, and an AMC movie theatre– most of which are temporarily closed at the moment.  Back in May, Neiman Marcus announced bankruptcy; there is speculation that this is a contributing factor to the current sale of the mall.
