Big Game to Close the Regular Season for the Washington Wizards Today

The Washington Wizards clinched a spot in NBA post-season play when they defeated the Cleveland Cavaliers on Friday night. Today at 1pm they look to earn the 8th seed in the play-in tournament as they battle the Charlotte Hornets.

With the Boston Celtics locked into the 7th seed, the winner of today’s game between the Hornets and Wizards will be the 8th seeded team in the play-in tournament, with the losing team getting either the 9th or 10th seed, depending on how the Indians Pacers (current 10th seed) do in their game against the Toronto Raptors.

Earning the 8th seed means the Wizards would have two chances at winning a game that would advance them into the NBA playoffs– the first being against Boston.

Here’s how the play-in tournament works, according to ESPN:

  • Game 1: The No. 7 team in the standings by winning percentage will host the No. 8 team, with the winner earning the No. 7 seed in the playoffs. The losing team gets another chance in Game 3.
  • Game 2: The No. 9 team will host the No. 10 team, with the winner moving on to Game 3. The loser is eliminated and enters the NBA draft lottery.
  • Game 3: The loser of the No. 7 vs. No. 8 matchup will host the winner of the No. 9 vs. No. 10 matchup, with the victor grabbing the No. 8 seed in the postseason. The loser of Game 3 also enters the lottery.

4/3 Update: Donut Run will remain closed for the weekend to give its staff some rest before returning on Monday, 4/5

Shawn Petersen and Nicole Dao opened Donut Run in Takoma (6904 4th St NW, just outside of Takoma Park) on January 2nd.

The donut shop is open 7am-2pm daily, but frequently sells out of donuts soon after noon due to the popularity of the vegan baked goods. The donuts gained popularity in two years of pop-ups throughout the D.C. area prior to the shop opening.

Early this morning, they posted pictures of their shattered storefront window along with a message that Donut Run will be closed today while they clean up their shop.

Prior to the vandalism Donut Run displayed a Black Lives Matter banner in the window, which was also stolen overnight. “PS To whoever took our Black Lives Matter flag, please bring it back. We’ll gladly make you your own one.”

A few weeks back we wrote a piece that told “The Story Behind The DMV.” This led to a fun debate on what the area referred to as the DMV is actually made up of. We took all of your thoughts and opinions, threw in some of ours, and put together the map in our featured photo that shows a general opinion of what people think the DMV actually consists of. Below are some notes based on the feedback we received:

D.C. is the heart of the DMV. Almost everyone familiar with the term considered all of DC as being in the DMV.

Almost everyone feels that the areas immediately surrounding DC are part of the DMV:

• This includes places like Bethesda and Silver Spring in MoCo.
• Arlington, Alexandria, Falls Church, etc. in NoVa.
• Oxon Hill, Temple Hills, Suitland, Capital Heights, Hyattsville, College Park, etc. in Prince George’s County
.

Most feel that the DMV expands beyond the areas bordering D.C., including:

• As far as Rockville, Gaithersburg, etc. in MoCo.

• As far as Vienna, Springfield, etc. in NoVa

• As far as Upper Marlboro, Bowie, etc. in Prince George’s County.

Some think the DMV expands to include the entirety of the counties surrounding DC, plus some of the counties beyond that, this includes:

• All of MoCo

• Much of Loudoun County

• All of Fairfax County

• All of Prince William County

• All of Prince George’s County

• All of Howard County

• All of Anne Arundel County

• A small portion of Carroll County

• A small portion of Frederick County

• Places like Waldorf, MD, Annapolis, MD, and Woodbridge, VA

– “If your county has a metro station in it, it’s in the DMV” was a very popular response that many agreed with.

– A few people feel it expands to include all of the counties mentioned above and further. This include areas like Baltimore, MD, Fredericksburg, VA, and even places as far out as Harper’s Ferry, WV.

– A very small number feel that includes all of D.C., Maryland, and Virginia.

– A very small number believe it also includes the state of Delaware.

– Almost all people outside of the DMV agree the the DMV is the Department of Motor Vehicles.

D.C., along with 17 other cities, has submitted the paperwork to bid to be a host city of the 2026 World Cup.

The World Cup will be shared by Mexico, Canada, and the U.S, as was announced in 2018.  Mexico and Canada are expected to provide about 3 cities each to host various games, while the U.S. is expecting to have 10 different host cities for the 80-match long tournament.  D.C.’s bid names FedEx Field.

The other U.S. cities hoping to be chosen to host are New York, Los Angeles, Dallas, Miami, the Bay Area and Boston. Philadelphia; Atlanta; Orlando; Cincinnati; Nashville; Kansas City, Mo.; Houston; Denver; and Seattle.

DC26 has created an advisory board with 40 members that hope to convince FIFA that D.C. is the best option.  The board is composed of many soccer players and local business owners, including Bethesda resident José Andrés.
