Earlier today Montgomery County Councilmember Evan Glass released a map showing unemployment claims in the county by zip code.

Today’s announcement that the state is moving to Phase 3 on Friday has again taken us by surprise. Although I want to see our community open as quickly as possible, we must also proceed with care. We will continue to follow the data and science in Montgomery County, as we have done every day throughout the pandemic. We are averaging about 70 cases per day, and yesterday we had 97 cases– those numbers are concerning because they’re higher than they were a few weeks ago. Because we did not receive advance notice of the Governor’s decision, we need to review the Governor’s order to determine the best way forward. We will do this over the next few days to determine the best way to move forward for our residents and businesses while protecting the public health.
Governor Hogan Announces Stage 3, Individual Counties Still to Make Own Decisions
Per Governor Hogan’s press conference this afternoon:
“The State Board of Education will vote today on guidance for school systems to reevaluate their mode of instruction in the weeks ahead,” Governor Hogan tweeted this morning.
“It’s essential that we work together on flexible hybrid plans to safely begin getting some of our kids back into classrooms.”

Governor Hogan Announces Every County School System is Authorized to Open, MCPS Responds
Earlier today Governor Hogan announced that every county school system in Maryland is now fully authorized to begin safely reopening, as a result of health metrics across the state.

Any single qualifying article of clothing or footwear priced $100 or less – regardless of how many items are purchased at the same time – will be exempt from the state’s six percent sales tax. The first $40 of any backpack purchase is also tax free.
Reemphasizing the need to protect the health and safety of Montgomery County residents as well as parents, students, teachers and staff from the spread of COVID-19, County Health Officer Dr. Travis Gayles today announced that he has rescinded his health order that prohibited nonpublic schools from opening for in-person instruction until after Oct. 1, 2020. The decision was made due to the new policy announced yesterday by the State Department of Health prohibiting the blanket closure of nonpublic schools.
Today’s new Health Officer Directive and Order regarding public, private and independent schools, dated Aug. 7, 2020, is effective immediately and rescinds the order dated Aug 5, 2020.
Reemphasizing the need to protect the health and safety of Montgomery County residents as well as parents, students, teachers and staff from the spread of COVID-19, County Health Officer Dr. Travis Gayles today issued a new Health Officer Directive and Order that continued to direct nonpublic schools in Montgomery County to remain closed for in-person instruction until at least Oct. 1, 2020.
Today’s order, citing the Maryland Code Annotated Health General § 18-208 and COMAR 10.06.01.06, rescinds and replaces the Health Officer Directive and Order Regarding Private and Independent Schools dated July 31, 2020. The new order, which is effective immediately, remains valid until Oct. 1, 2020, or until rescinded, superseded, amended, or revised by additional orders.
Hogan reverses order for MoCo private schools to move online
The governor issued an emergency order today that grants private and parochial schools the primary authority to decide whether to open in person this fall. On Friday, MoCo Health Officer Travis Gayles had ordered private schools to remain only online until Oct. 1.
