Baba Cisse, a Junior at Albert Einstein High School, and Arvin Kim, a junior at Walt Whitman High School were elected as finalists for Student Member of the Board. The election The general election, which allows for all 80,000 + secondary students in MCPS to vote, will take place on April 20th.

Education

The Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Fair will be held virtually from 6-8:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 18. Co-sponsored by MCPS and the Montgomery County Chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, this event provides an opportunity for students in Grades 8-12 and their parents/guardians to meet with representatives from more than 60 HBCUs and participate in workshops.

Qualified seniors will be able to receive on-the-spot admissions during the event. Seniors must pre-register and complete their applications through Naviance.


MCPS

On Friday, MCPS sent out a community messaging announcing that MCPS in now accepting religious exemptions to their COVID-19 vaccine requirement for student athletes. They cite the decreasing COVID-19 transmission rate as well as the high vaccination rate in Montgomery County as the reason for their decision.

The Washington Post published an Op-Ed Friday morning written by Montgomery County Police Chief Marcus Jones.

Jones talks about last month’s shooting at Magruder High School, and the fact that several students who are alleged to have witnessed or known about the shooting, posted on Twitter and Snapchat about the incident instead of calling 9-1-1.

Bethesda

Jackass Forever took the #1 box office spot this past weekend, grossing over $23 million in its first weekend in theaters. The comedy is the fourth Jackass movie and is based on the American reality comedy television series created by MoCo natives Jeff Tremaine and Spike Jonze along with actor Johnny Knoxville. Tremaine and Jonze were childhood friends, both growing up in MoCo and graduating from Walt Whitman High School in Bethesda in the mid 80s and are both executive producers of all the Jackass movies, including Jackass Forever.

Tremaine is the former editor of the skating culture magazine Big Brother and a former art director of the influential BMXmagazine GO. He was also a former professional BMX rider. Tremaine has directed and produced all the movies in the Jackass franchise and was also the executive producer on the MTV reality series Rob and Big, and the executive producer of Rob Dyrdek’s Fantasy Factory, Ridiculousness, Nitro Circus, and Adult Swim’s Loiter Squad.

Dr. Cavena J. Griffith was appointed as Principal at the upcoming Gaithersburg Elementary School #8. She is currently the principal intern at Whetstone Elementary School.

Construction has continued to progress at the site of the new Gaithersburg elementary school that will be located at Kelley Park.

13 educators who completed the National Board Certification process and became National Board Certified Teachers in December 2021, were recognized by the Montgomery County Board of Education in this morning’s meeting.Through its National Board Certification Program, the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) certifies highly accomplished educators who meet rigorous standards through intensive study, expert evaluation, self-assessment, and peer review.

NBPTS seeks to identify and recognize teachers who effectively enhance student learning and demonstrate the high level of knowledge, skills, abilities, and commitments reflected in the Five Core Propositions that define what National Board Certified Teachers (NBCTs) should know and be able to do.
