MoCo Native Tim Kurkjian Wins 2022 BBWAA Career Excellence Award

Tim Kurkjian attended Walter Johnson High School in Bethesda, where he played on the school’s basketball and baseball teams. At the suggestion of his basketball coach, Kurkjian began writing for the student newspaper, The Pitch, and the school’s yearbook, “The Wind-up.

He eventually became the sports editor of The Pitch and realized that journalism would be the surest means of fulfilling his childhood dream of making a living in professional sports. He graduated from the school in 1974 and after some time away, still lives in MoCo today.

MCPS Update: All Non-Athletic Extracurricular Activities Suspended from Dec. 20-Jan. 7, All Sporting Events Scheduled During Winter Break Cancelled

Montgomery County Public Schools sent out a community message on Friday afternoon with updated guidelines for sports and afterschool activities. The letter states that all-in person, non-athletic afterschool activities have been suspended from December 20 through January 7, though community events and day care can continue as scheduled.

Athletic practices and games can continue as scheduled but all athletic games scheduled to take place during Winter Break (December 23-January 2) are now cancelled, though optional practices are allowed.

MCPS Addresses Viral Online Threats; States There is No Credibility in Threats

MCPS has posted an important message on the homepage of its website notifying the community that the school system and local police have been made aware of viral online threats that have been going on across the country.

In the message, which can be seen below, MCPS states that there is no indication that the threats have any credibility.

No Recommendation to Radically Change In-Person Instruction for MCPS At This Time; Additional Updates to Come

With Covid-19 cases on the rise in professional sports and across local schools, MCPS has continued to meet regularly with Montgomery County’s Department of Health and Human Services to discuss Covid-19 health and safety protocols.

Dr. Earl Stoddard, Montgomery County’s Assistant Chief Administrative Officer, has told us that a team of himself, Dr. James Bridgers (Montgomery County Deputy Health Officer), Dr. Raymond Crowel (Director of Montgomery County Health and Human Services), Mr. James D’Andrea (MCPS Chief of Staff) and many others meet weekly, including earlier today.

Updated COVID-19 Guidelines for MCPS Athletics

MCPS has released new guidelines for school athletic programs, including an updated policy stating that student athletes must wear masks while sitting on the sidelines/benches.

According to WTOP, under the new guidance, all games and practices will be put on hold for a team for 14 days from the last know exposure if there are five or more active cases amongst the team.

Happening This Week in MCPS: 2023 Budget Presentation and Forum on Student Safety

Interim Superintendent Dr. Monifa B. McKnight will unveil her Fiscal Year 2023 Recommended Operating Budget at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 16. Her presentation will be streamed live on the MCPS website, MCPS TV (Comcast 34, Verizon 36 and RCN 89) and on YouTube.
