This week (May 8th), Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) contractors began resurfacing Parklawn Drive in North Bethesda. Crews will be working on weekdays from 9AM to 4PM, resurfacing all lanes of Parklawn Drive between Randolph Road and the CSX Rail bridge (just East of Nebel Street).

Montgomery County-based M. Luis Construction Co., Inc. is performing the work. Crews will be removing the top layer of asphalt and paving a new asphalt surface on top of the existing base course. Work is expected to wrap up in June, as long as the weather cooperates, according to the Montgomery County Department of Transportation.

UPDATE: This closure has been delayed until August 30.

Beginning Monday, August 30, Westbound Randolph Road will be closed between Parklawn Drive and Nebel Street. The closure is expected to last approximately six months, meaning that section of Randolph Road likely won’t reopen until spring 2022.

The closure is needed for underground electrical work as part of Pepco’s new White Flint Substation.

Traffic heading westbound on Randolph Road will be diverted to Parklawn Drive and then directed to Rockville Pike (MD-355).

Crews on Randolph Road will be excavating entry pits and then installing micro-tunnels under the Randolph Road railroad crossing. Crews will then install conduit and an electrical duct bank. Sidewalks along Randolph are supposed to remain open during the project.

Update from MCDOT: “Unfortunately, the proposed extension of Montrose Pkwy between Parklawn Dr. & Viers Mill Rd. was not funded. We are updating the related page on our website. MCDOT is requesting funding for a study to add a bridge at the CSX Railroad tracks.”

Article previously provided the project description and construction dates from the MCDOT website.

Montrose Parkway East did not receive funding.

The project description: to construct a new 4-lane divided parkway (A-270) as recommended in the North Bethesda/Garrett Park and Aspen Hill Master Plans. This will be an extension of Montrose Parkway West and the SHA MD 355 project, per MCDOT.

This project would have constructed the segment of Montrose Parkway between its current terminus east of the existing Montrose Parkway/Rockville Pike (MD 355) interchange and Parklawn Drive. The project included a bridge over Nebel Street and the CSX railroad tracks and includes a “single point urban” interchange at Parklawn Drive.

MCDOT is requesting funding for a study to add a bridge at the CSX railroad tracks.

Project documents, for the unapproved project, can be seen here.
