New Program Helps MoCo Residents Grow Their Own Food– for Free!
Food Grown Home, founded this past January, makes it easy for MoCo residents to learn the art of growing their own food. They deliver everything needed to grow fruits and vegetables right to participants’ homes free of charge. This includes seeds, starters, reusable containers, soil, and more! They also offer mentoring sessions with advisors to provide advice and instructions about growing.
The only requirements for participants are that they must live in MoCo, they must be willing to take photos or videos of your growing products to share with Food Grown Home, and they must be comfortable with their staff delivering growing supplies directly to their homes.
Food Grown Home offers priority to food insecure and low-income households, though all are welcome to apply.
Food Grown Home was developed in collaboration by three local organizations, MetroGreen Style (a sustainable lifestyle brand), Family Learning Solutions (a nonprofit organization), and the Audelia Community Response Team, (a mutual aid network based in Prince George’s and Montgomery County.)
In addition to offering their growing program, Food Grown Home also provides food rescue packages weekly to MoCo families in need. These food packages feature healthy as well as culturally relevant offerings.

Update: After this article was initially posted, the Food Grown Home program reached capacity thanks to the interest of our readers. At this moment, they are not accepting new participants, but they plan to open a wait list soon!

Second Round of Paycheck Protection Program Funding Now Available
A little while ago, we let you know that there would be another round of federal funding for the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP).
Yesterday, the Small Business Administration released documents for business owners who are first time PPP participants, second time participants, and they have shared other information about additional coronavirus relief that is available.
This new round of PPP funding can cover up to 3.5 months of salary for restaurant and hotel employees and up to 2.5 months of salaries for employees of other businesses.
Some items to note about the second round of PPP funding:
- Restaurants and hotels can receive funding for up to 3.5 months of employee paychecks, all other small businesses can receive funding to cover up to 2.5 months of paychecks
- Small businesses can apply for the second round even if they already received funding from the first round
- Similar to the first round of PPP, business owners will need to apply directly through their banks
- Only businesses with fewer than 300 employees can apply
- Businesses are required to apply a minimum of 60% of funds received towards employee payroll
- Businesses have to prove they had at least a 25% decrease in business in 2020 in at least one quarter
- The maximum PPP loan for each business is capped at $2 million
- $12 billion has been earmarked for POC-owned businesses

While participants may request funding through their bank, other online lenders are participating in the program as well. As of right now, not all lenders are accepting applications just yet, but are expected to do so in the coming days. Maryland Reaches 9% Daily Positivity Rate as MoCo Reports Second-Highest Number of New Cases Ever
The Maryland Department of Health today recorded 2,765 new cases from 30,696 tests. Statewide, there were also 30 new deaths and 56 new hospitalizations.
Today’s data increased the state’s seven-day average positivity rate by almost half a percentage point to 7.33 percent.
There were also 505 new cases detected from 5,806 tests (an 8.7 percent single-day positivity rate) in Montgomery County, the largest single-day increase besides May 19, when a backlog of tests were reported statewide. The current seven-day average of new cases in MoCo is 326, and the seven-day average positivity rate is 5.63 percent.
Maryland Governor Larry Hogan will hold a press conference at 4pm today to provide an update on the state’s response to the COVID surge.
