Collision Involving Overturned Concrete Truck Closes Several Lanes of I495

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services responded to a collision involving an overturned concrete truck on Monday, November 7, around 2:45pm. According to Chief Spokesperson for MCFRS Pete Piringer, the incident involved two vehicles and has blocked several lanes of the Inner Loop I495 between Colesville Rd and University Blvd.  EMS has transported two patients with non life-threating injuries. We will post an update when more information becomes available.

$50,000 Winning Powerball Ticket Sold at 7-Eleven on Saturday; Monday’s Powerball Jackpot Now Over $600M

The Powerball jackpot has been hit five times this year, with the top amount of $632.6 million hit Jan. 5 and split between two tickets sold in California and Wisconsin. Lottery officials encourage all winners to sign the backs of their tickets immediately and put them in a safe location. They get 182 days from the date of the drawing to claim their prizes.

Players must redeem prizes larger than $25,000 by mail or at Lottery headquarters in the Montgomery Park Business Center, 1800 Washington Blvd., Suite 330 in Baltimore. U.S. Naval Officer and Girlfriend Charged Federally for Cyberstalking, Aggravated Identity Theft, and Conspiracy for a Campaign to Harass Ex-Wife

The defendants are scheduled to have initial appearances beginning at 3:00 p.m. today, in U.S. District Court in Baltimore before U.S. Magistrate Judge J. Mark Coulson.

The federal charges were announced by United States Attorney for the District of Maryland Erek L. Barron; Special Agent in Charge Thomas J. Sobocinski of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Baltimore Field Office; Special Agent in Charge Alison F. Zavada of the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS); Special Agent in Charge Craig Miles of the U.S. Department of Transportation Office of Inspector General (USDOT OIG); Chief Marcus Jones of the Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD); and Chief Paul W. Neudigate of the Virginia Beach, Virginia Police Department (VBPD).

Copper Canyon Grill in Silver Spring to Reopen on October 18 After July Fire

The Copper Canyon Grill at 928 Ellsworth Dr in Silver Spring has announced it will reopen on Tuesday, October 18.  A kitchen fire closed the location back on July 12.  In addition to the $1 million in repairs and renovations that were just completed, the restaurant has announced plans for future upgrades to its bar and the addition of a sushi station and a chef’s table. Copper Canyon has an additional MoCo location in Gaithersburg (Rio) and it’s sister restaurant the Stanford Grill has a location in Rockville.

 The beloved downtown restaurant was already undergoing general renovations, and the shut-down allowed for some of those projects to be completed at a quicker pace than expected.  In total, over $1 million in renovations were completed. A newly renovated exterior and foyer welcomes guests into a more contemporary environment.  The restaurant’s ability to accept and serve private parties has also been significantly improved as a result of these renovations.  Those rooms are now available to reserve for both corporate and personal gatherings throughout the holiday season.

Tropical Smoothie Cafe Now Open in the Woodmoor Shopping Center

Tropical Smoothie Cafe is now open at 10141 Colesville Rd in Silver Spring, at the Woodmoor Shopping Center, in the space formerly occupied by Hoover-Fisher Florists. Tropical Smoothie’s most recent MoCo location opened in Germantown on December 26 and the company has additional locations in Aspen Hill , Bethesda, 2 in Gaithersburg, Travilah, and White Oak.

The café offers more than just smoothies as the menu contains flatbreads, wraps, quesadillas, sandwiches, bowls, breakfast, and a lot more.

Traffic: Demonstrators Shut Down I-495 at Route 29, All Traffic Stopped

Per MCPD: The Montgomery County Police Department is assisting Maryland State Police for a large traffic backup on I495 at Georgia Avenue and Colesville Road. Drivers are advised to seek an alternate route. Expect significant delays.

Updated Opening Information for the Silver Spring Outdoor Skating Rink

Reservations are required to skate and can be made at www.silverspringiceskating.com/. Additional information below courtesy of the Silver Spring Urban District: The Silver Spring Ice Skating Rink at Veterans Plaza is offering staggered skating sessions with online reservations and ticket purchasing. The rink itself is outdoors, in the open air. This makes it a great place for families and adults looking for fun, winter themed outings, especially if they are hesitant to attend indoor gatherings due to the increased spread of COVID-19 and the Omicron variant.

The Silver Spring Ice Skating Rink requires social distancing while at the facility, on the ice rink itself, and while waiting to enter the facility. Masks must be worn inside the facility.
