The search will be guided by the Board’s core values, strategic priorities, and desired characteristics gathered this year from input by stakeholders in Montgomery County.

hey The Board will be gathering input from the community on the critical characteristics of the next superintendent in a number of ways. There is a survey, virtual town halls, interviews, and focus groups with a broad spectrum of community leaders. All of the information gathered will inform the selection of the next superintendent.

Mohammed Choudhury Named Next Maryland State Superintendent of Schools

In a unanimous vote today, the Maryland State Board of Education has appointed Mr. Mohammed Choudhury as the next Maryland State Superintendent of Schools. He will replace Karen Salmon, who is retiring after holding the position for the last five years.

Per Maryland Public Schools:

Currently serving as Associate Superintendent and Chief Strategy, Talent and Innovation Officer for the San Antonio independent School District, Mr. Choudhury is nationally recognized for his visionary leadership and unwavering commitment to equity, innovation, and excellence in public education.

“When we set out on our search for Maryland’s next
superintendent, our goal was to identify and hire the highest caliber candidate to build the future of education for all Maryland children. Considering Mr. Choudhury’s outstanding transformative
accomplishments, we are completely confident that we have hired the right person, one who deeply cares about children,” said Board President Clarence Crawford.

“Mr. Choudhury distinguished himself by providing a fresh perspective, and his engaging high-energy approach brings the best out of the people he serves. He is a bold pioneer in the educational community, and we are fortunate to have secured his leadership as Maryland’s chief education officer as
we continue to recover from the devastating impacts of COVID-19 and seek to implement the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future.”

The Montgomery County Board of Education approved the appointment of Deputy Superintendent Dr. Monifa B. McKnight as the acting/interim superintendent for MCPS.

Effective June 1, she will serve as acting superintendent and will fully assume the position of interim superintendent July 1.

Prior to being named the Deputy Superintendent of MCPS, Dr. McKnight served as the Chief School Management and Instructional Leadership Officer for the Howard County Public School System.

She was previously the Director for Secondary Leadership Development Programs for MCPS and also served as the principal of Ridgeview Middle School, where she received the Maryland Middle School Principal of the Year award.
