Fox 5 is the first of the major local networks to release a winter outlook and it may be a little disappointing for snow lovers.

Another “La Niña” is expected (like last year), which means the jet stream and severe weather are likely to be farther north, while weather is the south is warmer than usual. We usually have below average snowfall and above average temperatures during La Niña winters.

Fox 5’s Mike Thomas agrees, as he’s predicting 5-13” of snow for most of MoCo for the entire winter.

Like many recent winters, a bigger blizzard event is not expected and smaller/moderate events that involve sleet and mixing are more likely.

Washington DC has only had one winter in the last five years with double digit snowfall (16.9” in 2018-2019), so going with a low total has become a smarter prediction for our area.

Note: Snow totals are usually higher in Montgomery County than they are in DC, especially in Upper MoCo.

Additional Winter Outlooks are expected to be released in the next week or two and we’ll have recaps for you here on The MoCoShow– the home of MoCoSnow.

The full outlook can be seen here.
