Highlights From Today’s Media Event at Seneca Valley High School Celebrating the Return of Students to Montgomery County Public Schools
- Today is the first day back for students and this morning’s media event at the newly reopened Seneca Valley High School in Germantown was about celebrating the return of in person learning to Montgomery County Public Schools, and acknowledging those who helped make it a reality.
- Seneca Valley Principal Marc Cohen welcomed everyone and noted that SVHS is now the largest high school in state, and has over 2,100 students.
- Board of Education President Brenda Wolff spoke of the unimaginable distractions that occurred over the last 18 months. She said they are doingall they can to ensure a safe environment for learning, and that “today is a day of celebration for the school system and Seneca Valley”
- Interim Superintendent Dr. Monifa McKnight said today was a fullreopening of 209 Montgomery County schools and the return of 160,000 students 24,000 staff members.
- McKnight said that “today represents a day where we come back to a new normal” and that MCPS is “back andbetter than ever”.
- Masks, staff being vaccinated, testing of random students, communication with families, and utilizing outdoor space will all be essential.
- She also noted that MCPS is welcoming 50 new social workers to system this fall.
- County Executive Marc Elrich said that what happened with COVID-19was unprecedented, and quoted the song “Don’t Know What You Got (Till It’s Gone)”
- Elrich thanked the BOE, PTA, County Council, HHS, and especially Dr. Gayles for their help over the past 18 months and said the countywas successful because we were strict
- “Covid has not gone away, we’re all going to have to manage it.”
- Elrich said he is confident in the school system and spoke about the county’sCTE programs, which prepare kids for the work force.
- Councilmember Tom Hucker spoke about the importance in focusing on behavioral health needs, both diagnosed and undiagnosed, noting that we don’t exactly know the toll the past 18 months took on students emotionally.
- Councilmember Craig Rice said that “all of our kids deserve a great building like this” when speaking about the news Seneca Valley High School.
