Suspect Arrested in Wheaton Homicide; Held Without Bond

3/7 Update: Today in the District Court for Montgomery County, Judge Victor Del Pino ordered defendant, Cardel Chaney, held without bond.

Chaney, 20, of Silver Spring, is charged with second-degree murder for the shooting death of 17-year old Devin Michael Dickey on Friday.

A preliminary hearing was set for March 18th, 9am District Court room 513

Gaithersburg, MD – Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police- Major Crimes Division have arrested 20-year-old Cardel Chaney from Silver Spring in connection with a homicide that occurred Friday, March 4, 2022 in the area of Georgia Ave. and Reedie Dr. in Wheaton.

At approximately 6:47 p.m., 4th District Officers responded to the location for the report of a shooting that just occurred.

Officers arrived at the scene and located a male victim, later identified as 17-year-old Devin Dickey from Silver Spring, with an apparent gunshot wound. Officers provided life-saving measures to Dickey until Montgomery County Fire Rescue arrived at the scene. Dickey was transported to an area hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

Officers spoke with witnesses and obtained a physical description of the suspect. Officers established a perimeter and searched the area for the suspect. Inside the Wheaton Metro Station, officers located an individual, later identified as Cardel Chaney, who matched the description of the suspect.

Working in conjunction with Metro Transit Police Department, detectives viewed the surveillance footage and recovered items of evidentiary value in the metro station that connected Chaney to Dickey’s death.

Chaney was placed under arrest and transported to the Central Processing Unit where he has been charged with second-degree murder. He is being held without bond.
