ROCKVILLE, Md., June 2, 2022—The Montgomery County Council issued the following statement on the tragic mass shooting that took place on June 1 at Saint Francis Hospital’s Natalie Medical Building in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and in response to the increasing waves of nationwide gun violence.
“Yesterday, four people were killed in a Tulsa medical building, in what can only be described as a horrific and senseless incident of violence. This marks the 233rd mass shooting in 2022.
“The Montgomery County Council is enraged that our nation is suffering from yet another mass shooting, mere days after the tragedies that took place in Buffalo, New York, in Uvalde, Texas and across the United States where over a dozen mass shootings took nine lives and injured more than 70 individuals during the Memorial Day weekend.
“On a daily basis, public health and medical professionals nationwide put their lives on the line to care for their patients. Our medical professionals are there to care for us in our time of greatest need, especially as we continue to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic. It is heartbreaking, yet again, that this tragedy occurred in a medical building, where doctors and other medical professionals are fighting to save lives and patients are seeking medical care.
“To add to this tragedy, three other states, Ohio, Pennsylvania and California, experienced active shootings approximately at the same time as the mass shooting in Tulsa, along with cities across the nation who also suffered from gun violence incidents on the same day.
“Gun violence in the United States is a public health crisis, one that we call on all legislators at every level of government across the nation to take swift action on to ensure that these tragedies cease once and for all.
“Our hearts are heavy today, and we will continue to do everything we can to support and protect our community.”
