Mashed is a global, multi-platform food brand with an audience of 25 million monthly readers and over 1 million subscribers on YouTube. They recently released a list of the “absolute best nachos in every state” and Glenmont’s very own Trippy Tacos earned the nod for Maryland.

Takoma Park Street Festival Happening Sunday, October 23

The popular Takoma Park Street Festival returns for its 41st year of music, vendors, food and fun in Takoma Park. This year’s festival takes place on Sunday, October 23rd, 2022 from 10:00 am-5:00 pm on Carroll Avenue in Takoma Park, MD to Carroll Street, NW in Takoma, DC. Festival goers will enjoy the day exploring over 150 vendors booths, live music from 18 local bands, food trucks and more. Governor Hogan Announces Nearly $72 Million For State Revitalization Program Awards

“The partnerships that drive these projects across our state are crucial to spurring economic growth in Maryland’s diverse and vibrant communities,” said Governor Hogan. “Our state revitalization programs are a shining example of how we can work together to create impactful change and improve the quality of life for residents.”

The six programs will support revitalization and redevelopment projects and activities including: business expansion and retention; streetscape improvements; homeownership and home rehabilitation incentives; commercial improvement programs; community facilities; mixed-use development, and demolition activities. Le Macaron is Coming to Rio

French pastry shop Le Macaron is coming to 7 Grand Corner Ave (next to BurgerFi) in Gaithersburg’s Rio. Menu items will include macarons (available in 20 flavors), gourmet chocolates, French gelato, specialty European style coffees, classic French pastries, and homemade candies. The store is scheduled to open in spring 2023. La Macaron joins Miss Toya’s Southern Kitchen and Charley Prime Foods on the list of restaurants coming to Rio.

According to its website, “Founders, Rosalie Guillem, who was living in Florida and her daughter, Audrey Guillem-Saba, living in France, had a dream to share delectable French macarons with the world and to reunite their family. The family, originally hailing from France, were surprised to find that the American take on the “macaron” was often simply sugar spun into a cookie shape or confused with the familiar coconut cookie “macaroon”. They knew that with a little consumer education, and by treating the American palate to true French macarons, they could bring a taste and texture sensation to the marketplace.

Postal Worker Robbed in Potomac, $50,000 Reward Offered for Information Leading to Arrest

US Postal Inspectors from the Washington Division and the Montgomery County Police Department are investigating an incident where a USPS mail carrier was robbed at gun point on Thursday, October 20, around 11:30am in the 7600blk of Coddle Harbor Ln in Potomac. Per the United States Postal Inspection Service:

This is investigation is still in the preliminary stages. We are requesting that anyone with information regarding this incident contact the U.S. Postal Inspection Service at 1-877-876-2455. Callers may remain anonymous, and a reward is being offered up to $50,000 for any information leading to the arrest and conviction of the suspect.”

Coming Soon to Gaithersburg (Restaurants, Retail, and More)

The restaurant is part of Jeffeary Miskiri’s Miskiri Hospitality Group, which describes itself as a unique collective of Black, family and woman-owned products and restaurants in the DC area. Miss Toya’s will serve southern-influenced dishes such as red beans and rice, macaroni and cheese and a southern fried chicken sandwich. It will be joining the recently announced Sportrock Climbing Centers and Charley Prime as well as the recently opened Donutchew, as locally-based businesses opening in Gaithersburg’s Rio. No opening date has been provided.

Nearly 300 Attend First Latina Legacy Conference

On Friday, October 14, MCPS held its first Latina Legacy Conference, an event to empower young Latina female students. Keynote speaker Melissa Rivera, a communications specialist with the Department of Communications, spoke on overcoming imposter syndrome and reframing failures as redirections and opportunities.

Other speakers included: Alicia Deeny, principal at Richard Montgomery High School; Melissa Laureano, parent community coordinator; Paula Pero, world language resource teacher at Albert Einstein High School; Norca Yarborough, lead Emergent Multilingual Learners (EML) therapeutic counselor, and Karla Lopez-Arias, supervisor with Behavioral Health.

MCPS Celebrates Adding 61 Additional Electric Buses to Lead the Nation in School Bus Electrification

Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) and Highland Electric Fleets, Inc. will celebrate the recent addition of 61 electric school buses (for a total of 86) to the MCPS bus fleet. This gives MCPS the largest electrified school bus fleet in the nation.

MCPS will hold a press conference and reception 10:30am on Monday, October 24th at Walter Johnson High School that will include Montgomery County and MCPS officials with 15 electric school buses available to tour with rides available to the nearby Bethesda Bus Depot to examine the electric charging infrastructure.

Snow Plow Obstacle Course, The “Snow Road-Eo”, Took Place in Gaithersburg on Thursday

The team-building event is geared towards snow removal preparedness for the upcoming winter weather season. The “Snow Road-eo” returned to the Activity Center at Bohrer Park on Thursday, October 20, 2022. The team-building event is geared towards snow removal preparedness for the upcoming winter weather season.

Seven teams, each consisting of a snow plow driver & a navigator, competed in a timed obstacle course where they negotiated their way through eight stations along a plotted route. The course especially challenges the participants to operate large machinery in very tight spaces, something they encounter regularly when plowing courts & newer developments with on-street parking. Crew members completed pre-trip plow truck inspections and a written exam prior to the obstacle course event.

Self-Defense Classes for Women Will Be Offered Again This Fall by Montgomery County Commission for Women

The classes are being in-person after being held virtually over the past two years due to the COVID-19 health crisis. They will be taught by instructors certified in Rape Aggression Defense (RAD).

The self-defense seminars will be offered from 7- 9 p.m. at each of the locations. The seminar schedule:
