Downtown Silver Spring

In April 2021, we let you know that IHOP’s new concept, Flip’d by IHOP, would be taking over the old Asian Bistro Cafe location at 8537 Georgia Avenue between Panera and Red Lobster. The restaurant has now set an opening date of Tuesday, September 20th per Google that was confirmed by Downtown Silver Spring.

MoCo Government

The 15-member Commission consists of nine voting public members nominated and appointed by the County Council; four voting public members nominated by the County Executive and appointed by the County Council; and two non-voting ex officio members appointed by the County Council: the Police Chief or the Police Chief’s designee, and the President of an employee organization certified under Article V of Chapter 33 (Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 35) or the President’s designee.  

The Commission must: 1) advise the Council on policing matters; 2) provide information regarding best practices on policing matters; 3) recommend policies, programs, legislation, or regulations; 4) comment on matters referred to it by the Council; 5) conduct at least one public forum each year for community input on policing matters; 6) accept correspondence and comments from members of the public; and 7) engage in public education. The Commission must submit an annual report to the Executive and Council on its functions, activities, accomplishments and plans and objectives, by July 1 of each year. 


Gaithersburg

The City has received the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2022, from the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) of the United States and Canada. Gaithersburg is receiving this award, the highest form of recognition in governmental budgeting, for the 21stconsecutive time. The award is officially presented to the Department of Finance & Administration.

The City had to satisfy nationally-recognized guidelines for effective budget presentation. These guidelines are designed to assess how well a municipality’s budget serves as a policy document, a financial plan, an operations guide, and a communications device.


Rockville

Cineworld Group, a leading cinema operator in 10 countries and parent company of Regal cinemas (Montgomery County locations in Germantown, Rockville, and Silver Spring), announced that Cineworld has commenced Chapter 11 cases in the United States Bankruptcy Court. The current plan is for operations to continue without any interruptions at existing locations and the company is hoping to emerge from bankruptcy in the first quarter of 2023. Per the press release: As part of the Chapter 11 cases, Cineworld, with the expected support of its secured lenders, will seek to implement a de-leveraging transaction that will significantly reduce the Group’s debt, strengthen its balance sheet and provide the financial strength and flexibility to accelerate, and capitalise on, Cineworld’s strategy in the cinema industry. The Group Chapter 11 Companies enter the Chapter 11 cases with commitments for an approximate $1.94 billion debtor-in-possession financing facility from existing lenders, which will help ensure Cineworld’s operations continue in the ordinary course while Cineworld implements its reorganisation.


Olney

Last November we let you know that Shear Thairapy, a salon that is owned by MoCo residents Amanda Burton and Staci Graeves, will take over the old Hallmark location next to TJ Maxx at 18305 Olney Center Drive in the Olney Village Center. The salon will host a Grand Opening party on Saturday, September 24th from 5pm-8pm. Per Shear Thairapy, the party will offer “appetizers, cocktails, and lots of fun giveaways.”

Burton and Graeves met at Sherwood High School and have remained friends through the years. Both are mothers to young children and started the salon in Graeves’ basement. It all started with the two moms and has now expanded to include a staff of 16.


MoCo Police

Per MCPD: Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – 3rd District Investigative Section are asking for the public’s assistance in locating a missing 84-year-old man who was last seen on Cresthaven Drive in Silver Spring.

Milton Earl Smith Jr. was last seen at approximately 11 a.m., on Thursday, September 8, 2022, leaving the 1000 block of Cresthaven Drive. Smith Jr. is 5-feet, 9-inches tall and approximately 160 pounds. He is balding with a gray mustache and glasses.


MoCo

The Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) is asking current, former and potential Ride On bus users to take a Customer Satisfaction Survey, which will be available online through Friday, Oct. 7. Those who participate will be entered into a drawing that will award $100 gift cards to the names selected.

Rockville

Per the City of Rockville and Montgomery County: City of Rockville City Police will offer residents an opportunity to get to know the men and women of the department at an open house at the police station in Downtown Rockville from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 10.

The open house will feature vehicle and equipment displays, free children’s activities, inflatables, music provided by a DJ, food, treats, a visit by McGruff the Crime Dog and friends. City police officers, including K-9 Bolo, and department staff will be available to meet and greet visitors.


North Bethesda

Five Station Name Changes:

Physical station signage at White Flint and Largo Town Center has already undergone some changes to complete the process which requires fabrication and installation. Additionally, Metro is working with each jurisdictional partner to coordinate name change rollouts to minimize confusion for customers.


MoCo Government

The Public Safety (PS) Committee will meet on Monday, Sept. 12, at 9:30 a.m. to receive a briefing on the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service (MCFRS) Fire and Explosive Investigations (FEI) Unit.

The members of the PS Committee include Chair Sidney Katz, Council President Gabe Albornoz and Councilmember Tom Hucker.
