Downtown Silver Spring

In April 2021, we let you know that IHOP’s new concept, Flip’d by IHOP, would be taking over the old Asian Bistro Cafe location at 8537 Georgia Avenue between Panera and Red Lobster, according to the PetersonCos website. Asian Bistro Cafe closed about 6 years ago and the space has remained vacant ever since.

Over a year later, construction is moving along  and the kitchen looks nearly ready to go (photo below) at the fast-casual breakfast spot. Downtown Silver Spring previously let us know that Flip’d was expected to open this Spring, but it looks like it still may be a couple months away as signage has not yet been installed.

Traffic

The Maryland State Highway Administration has announced that all travel lanes are now open on southbound I-270, following over two weeks of repairs for a sinkhole that was caused by a failed corrugated drainage pipe in the right lane of I-270 southbound, prior to Exit 9 (I-370).

Per MDSHA last week: “Major pipe failure looked small on surface of SB I-270, but it was only the tip of the iceberg. Damage underneath was not visible to drivers but is 20 ft wide, 15 ft long & 12 ft deep. Crews are installing new 80-ft pipe w/a focus on your safety.”

Per Montgomery County: On Thursday, County Executive Marc Elrich was joined by Council President Gabe Albornoz, Councilmember Tom Hucker, members of the Montgomery County State Delegation and representatives from EDENS to announce bringing a main “anchor” store back to the Burtonsville Crossing Shopping Center and the redevelopment of the vacant shopping center. A lease has been signed by the Phoenix-based company Sprouts Farmers Market in what is seen as the first critical step to kick start the revitalization of a once thriving retail area. It will also be the grocery chain’s first store in Montgomery County. “We are excited to partner with Sprouts on bringing a unique grocery experience to Burtonsville,” said David Germakian, Managing Director, EDENS.
