Silver Spring

Oak View Elementary is located at 400 East Wayne Ave. in Silver Spring.   The meeting is open to the public and questions are permitted during the question-and-answer portion of the meeting. The Purple Line will be a 16-mile light rail line that will extend from Bethesda in Montgomery County to New Carrollton in Prince George’s County. It will provide a direct connection to the Metrorail Red, Green and Orange Lines at Bethesda, Silver Spring, College Park, and New Carrollton. The Purple Line also will connect to MARC, Amtrak and local bus services. The revised planned completion date is 2026.

MDOT MTA has been holding planning community meetings, open houses and Community Advisory Meetings to give residents updates on the Purple Line. Additional information is available on the project’s website at  purplelinemd.com/upcoming-meetings.

WMATA

Per WMATA: Metro took control of the Silver Line Extension today at 6:00 a.m. This milestone, known as the “Operational Readiness Date” (ORD), marks the point where provisional care and control of the Extension – including six new Silver Line stations, 11.4 miles of new track, and a new rail yard – is formally transferred from the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA) to Metro.

The opening date for passenger service will follow an action by Metro’s Board of Directors on the final acceptance of the line from MWAA. “This milestone enables our team to test the tracks and systems, train and familiarize our workforce on yard operations, mainline and stations and ensure that we provide safe and reliable service for customers on the extension,” said Interim General Manager and CEO Andy Off. “We look forward to opening the new stations soon and delivering high quality rail connections to Dulles Airport and Loudoun County.”

MCPS

Per MCPS: Vaccination for COVID-19 is strongly recommended for student-athletes, but is no longer required. This change to the vaccination requirement applies to summer conditioning and the upcoming fall season.

The change is due to community transmission levels, vaccination rates and analysis of activities (mostly outdoors). Vaccination requirements are subject to change, pending the latest guidance from the Student-Athlete Medical Advisory Committee for MCPS Athletics, in collaboration with DHHS.

MCPS

MCPS is partnering with the Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) to begin vaccinating children ages 6 months to 5 years old on Saturday, June 25 and Sunday, June 26, by appointment only.

Parents are encouraged to check with their pediatrician for vaccine availability as the majority of vaccine received in Montgomery County has been delivered to the private sector (physicians and pharmacies). County-operated clinics will offer one type of vaccine at each clinic.

Events

The Fox 5 morning show will bring its Zip Trip live broadcast to Rockville Town Square, Friday, July 8 to highlight Montgomery County and the City of Rockville. The roving report from the news morning show highlights a different location with a live broadcast each week from areas in the Washington, D.C., Maryland and Virginia region.

“The season will bring out our morning show talent to areas across the DMV,” reporter Sierra Fox said in a 2022 Zip Trip preview on the Fox 5 website. “We’ve got some familiar favorite segments, plus new ones up our sleeves. We want to share our excitement and prepare you to join us on Friday morning.”

MoCo Government

“The members of the Montgomery County Council express our disappointment and deep frustration at the Supreme Court’s ruling today, which struck down a common-sense gun safety law at a time when gun violence is devastating and traumatizing communities nationwide.

“The solution to this epidemic of gun violence is not more guns on the streets.

Rockville

Upon arrival, officers located the victim, 39-year-old Javier Gonzalez – Mena, suffering from a gunshot wound. Gonzalez – Mena succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

The investigation by detectives determined that Gonzalez – Mena, who has no known address, was staying at the Red Roof Inn, when there was a knock at the door. Gonzalez – Mena stepped outside to speak with the two suspects, when he was shot.

Beyond MoCo

McLean Police District – Noah Settles, 22, of Washington, D.C. turned himself in last night at the Adult Detention Center in Fairfax. He was held without bond. Settles was wanted in connection to the June 18 shooting that occurred at Tysons Corner Center in McLean.

Per Fairfax County Police: Officers were called just before 3 p.m. for reports of shots fired inside the mall. When officers arrived, witnesses directed them to the second level where a fight broke out that led to a brandishing. The groups dispersed and re-engaged a short time later. This led to three rounds being discharged. Officers quickly began clearing the mall to protect against any threat and to assist those who had sheltered in place. Fortunately, no individuals were struck by the gunfire; however, three community members received medical attention for injuries sustained while fleeing the shopping center.

Downtown Silver Spring

Back in September 2021 we let you know that Kusshi, a popular sushi restaurant in Pike & Rose, would be opening a new location called Kusshi.ko in Downtown Silver Spring, taking over the location that was formerly occupied by Gusto in Downtown Silver Spring (8512 Fenton Street).

We have been told that the restaurant will be dropping the “ko” from its name due to approval issues with the signage and will now be going by the Kusshi name going forward. The restaurant will have a similar, but slightly more limited, menu as Kusshi in Pike & Rose. We are told it will definitely have all of the sushi items.
