The City of Gaithersburg celebrates and honors Caribbean-American Heritage Month in June with a performance and a proclamation highlighting the culture, heritage & achievements of our Caribbean-American neighbors. At the Mayor & City Council meeting on Monday, June 6, at 7:30 p.m., Mayor Jud Ashman will issue an official proclamation declaring June 2022 as Caribbean-American Heritage Month in the City, recognizing the history & achievements of Caribbean-Americans. The proclamation will be presented to Joan Beckford, owner of Island Pride’s Oasis Restaurant & Catering.

Joan received the Caribbean American Heritage Spotlight Award from the Jamaican Nationals Association, Inc. in recognition of her exemplary and dedicated service to local communities. She was also recognized with an award from Walter Reed National Military Medical Center for her dedicated assistance and support of Bethesda’s Multicultural Committee’s Caribbean American Heritage Events.

Clearway Pain Solutions has opened its newest location in Bethesda. The office is located at 6410 Rockledge Dr #421 Bethesda, MD 20817 and is staffed by Dr. Anna Irwin. The Bethesda location joins the Germantown office as the only two Montgomery County locations.

Kansas City Royals Call Up Jose Cuas, Formerly of the Gaithersburg Giants

The Kansas City Royals have called up relief pitcher Jose Cuas of the Omaha Storm Chasers. Cuas attended and played for the University of Maryland. He spent the 2014 season on the roster of the Gaithersburg Giants of the Cal Ripken Collegiate Baseball League.

Prior to his time in Maryland, he was a four year letter winner at Grand Street Campus High School in Brooklyn, NY, where he helped the Wolves win the 2012 city championship. He was a 2012 all-city selection and was ranked No. 21 overall in New York. While at the University of Maryland, he played a versatile role for the Terrapins. In three seasons, he hit .243/.320/.395 with 30 doubles, four triples, 17 home runs, 112 RBIs, 15 stolen bases and 55 walks. In 2015, Cuas was selected by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 11th round of the MLB Draft.

Virtual Studio Built During COVID Launches In-Person Instruction at Woodmont Triangle in June

Located at 4853 Cordell Avenue, the new space will be housed at the previous Unity Woods Yoga Studio, which stopped operating at the location in summer of 2020. Owned and operated by Maryland native Jen Dobbins, Unity Dance & Movement is the in-person outgrowth of a virtual dance space she’s operated since 2020.

“When COVID closed many area dance studios, several parents and students approached me, asking that I teach virtually,” Dobbins says. “I started offering instruction, via Zoom, in my living room. Word gradually got around and I eventually hired some of my former colleagues to keep up with demand. Now, as the region transitions beyond the pandemic, we have a unique opportunity to bring back in-person dance instruction to Bethesda.”

Frost Middle School’s Vikram Reddy Competes in the Scripps National Spelling Bee

Vikram Reddy, a 14 year old 8th grader at Frost Middle School in Rockville, will compete as one of 234 participants in this year’s Scripps Spelling Bee, which begins today.

Reddy is sponsored by The Meakem Group in Bethesda and will be the only participant hailing from Montgomery Founty in this year’s contest. He enjoys playing tennis competitively (his favorite sport), and also plays the bass. In addition to sports and music, he has written several short stories for competitions.

Notice of Street Construction – Olde Towne & Fulks Corner Avenues in Gaithersburg

No road closures are planned, but expect minor delays at various times while work is in progress. Access to and from the parking garage will be available at all times through at least one of the two entry/exit locations.

On-street parking will be restricted at various times. “No Parking” signs will be posted at least 48 hours in advance of construction activity. These signs will be marked with the dates and times of the parking restrictions.

Nexstar To Expand Local News Operations Serving Washington, D.C., Northern Virginia and Maryland

Stations Will Launch New Newscasts, Expand Existing News, and Open Satellite News Bureaus in Hagerstown and Frederick, Maryland, and Chantilly, Virginia

Per the press release: Nexstar Media Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Nexstar Media Group, Inc. (NASDAQ: NXST), today announced that it will expand its local news operations serving Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Northern Virginia. The company plans to bring its two television stations currently serving the area, WDVM-TV (Ind) in Hagerstown, and WDCW-TV (CW) in Washington, D.C. (DMA #7), together at one central location in the nation’s capital. The new, combined operation will be known as “DC News Now.”

Progress at Upcoming Pollo Campero on 355 in Gaithersburg

Back in January, we let you know that Pollo Campero would be taking over the location that was home to KFC until December 2020 at 426 N Frederick Rd in Gaithersburg. The exterior of the building appears to almost be finished (minus the signage) and the location is currently hiring.

A timeframe for the opening has not been provided, but we wouldn’t be surprised to see it open by the end of the summer. No official word on the future of the Lakeforest location, but based on other businesses relocating from the mall to nearby areas, we’d expect the current location to close prior to the opening of the new location.

Small Fire at BurgerFi in Rio Tuesday Morning

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) responded to a call for smoke/haze in the kitchen of the recently opened BurgerFi restaurant at Grand Corner Ave in Rio at approximately 7:30am Tuesday morning.

Upon arrival, all occupants were found to be safe and accounted for. MCFRS located the source of the smoke, which was a small smoldering fire in a trash can that was quickly extinguished. There was no extension and no injuries.

World Heritage Festival to Take Place on June 5th

The World Heritage Festival will take place on June 5, 2022 at Veterans Plaza in Silver Spring (1 Veterans Place) from 1pm – 7pm. This will be a free and in-person event.

Per the event listing; “Taste delicious ethnic food, while getting refreshed with a scoop of ice cream or shaved ice or even a fresh smoothie!! Enjoy a beautiful cultural performance show and shop from more than 60 vendors displaying everything from fine art to jewelry, ceramics to crafts, and every creative item in between. Other vendors include area nonprofit organizations, entrepreneurs, and local businesses.”
