Per the State of Maryland:

ANNAPOLIS, MD—Governor Larry Hogan today announced nearly $10 million in grant awards through the new Community Safety Works program to more than 300 business districts and nonprofit organizations across Maryland, advancing a key plank of the governor’s Re-Fund The Police Initiative.


Bethesda

Jim Morrison was the lead singer of the rock band The Doors, who passed away at the age of 27 in 1971. Morrison is widely regarded as one of the “best singers” of all time”, coming in at #5 on Rolling Stone magazines “Best Lead Singers of All Time” list in 2011 and at #47 on the magazines “Best Singers of All Time” list, but did you know he also briefly lived in Montgomery County as a child?

Morrison was born in Florida in 1943. Due to his father being in the military, the family moved around a lot and briefly lived in Bethesda when Morrison was a toddler (photo below courtesy of the Bethesda Historical Society Facebook page


MoCo Government

Reardon Sullivan has announced his campaign for County Executive. Reardon is currently the chairman of Montgomery County’s Republican Central Committee (MCRCC), which is official organization of the Republican Party in Montgomery County.

He is currently the only GOP candidate to file, and would go up against the winner of the Democratic primary between incumbent Marc Elrich, David Blair, Tom Hucker, and Hans Riemer.


Beyond MoCo

Charred bat meat was found in the baggage of a Germantown man by U.S. Customs and Border Protection agriculture specialists at Washington Dulles International Airport on April 5.

Bat is considered bushmeat and is eaten in different parts of the world but is illegal to import to the United States, according to the CDC.


Gaithersburg

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services responded to a house fire on the 8700blk of Lochaven Dr. near Sabbath Ct, off of Warfield Rd. in Gaithersburg on Thursday around noon. First arriving units reported heavy fire in the garage.

By 1pm, Chief Spokesperson for MCFRS Pete Piringer tweeted that the bulk of fire had been knocked-down and that MCFRS were working on some ‘hotspots’ and checking for extension.


Germantown

Wegmans announced today that it will be eliminating plastic bag use company wide by the end of 2022, with the goal of shifting all customers to reusable bags.

Wegmans will incentivize the use of reusable bags by charging five cents per paper bag, according to a press release by the company.


MoCo Government

Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich delivered his 2022 “State of the County” address today at the Silver Spring Civic Building. This was Elrich’s first in-person State of the County address since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
