Montgomery County Public School students from at least 18 different high schools staged a walk out today at noon, in support of MCPS moving schools to virtual instruction for two weeks while COVID-19 cases are at higher levels.

According to the Instagram account @mcpsstudentwalkout2022, which has gained over 1,000 followers in less than a week, the students are demanding the following from MCPS:


Germantown

Seneca Valley High School has announced the hiring of Joseph Rankin as the new varsity football coach. Rankin, who graduated from Seneca Valley in 2009, played professionally for four years, including a stint with the Cleveland Browns.

He has been defensive coordinator at the school for the last three years under Justin Sickeri, who he takes over for.


Bethesda

BAR IVY is slated for downtown Bethesda. Blagden Hospitality Group (BHG) has signed a lease for the ground floor retail location at Carr’s newly delivered, landmark development, The Wilson & The Elm, a three-tower mixed use development on the corner of Wisconsin Avenue and Elm Street. The building already has prominent office customers at The Wilson, such as Fox 5, Walker & Dunlop, and ProShares, as well as a growing residential community at The Elm.

Bethesda

The Bethesda-based Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine, Inc. (HJF) is a global nonprofit that administers more than $500 million in medical research funds annually. For nearly 40 years, HJF has partnered with researchers and clinicians to provide bench to bedside to battlefield research support.

Today, HJF announced it received nearly $2M to support a study to evaluate treatment for volumetric muscle loss.

Rockville

Many questions remain unanswered after a teen suddenly died while walking at Montgomery College’s Rockville Campus Sunday night.

Around 10:30PM Sunday Night, members of the Rockville Volunteer Fire Department, Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service, and Montgomery County Police responded to Montgomery College’s Rockville Campus (51 Mannakee Street). Responders found 1 teen critically injured and 1 EMS Provider was also injured on scene.

Gaithersburg

Earlier this week we let you know that construction started at Lapu Lapu, the sister restaurant of popular Rockville/North Bethesda/Kensington restaurant Kuya Ja’s Lechon Belly.

The restaurant recently announced a pop-up that’ll allow you to sample the breakfast sandwiches that’ll be served at the upcoming restaurant. It will take place this Sunday, January 23 from 11am until 3pm at Kuya Ja’s (5268-H Nicholson Lane) for takeout or delivery, as dine-in is not currently being offered.
