Governor Hogan Announces Actions to Expand Federal-State Efforts to Fight Violent Crime, Including “Knock and Talk” Surge Initiative

Per the State of Maryland: Governor Larry Hogan today announced a series of major new actions to expand on federal-state efforts to fight violent crime and hold violent criminals accountable. The governor made the announcement at Maryland State Police (MSP) Barrack P in Glen Burnie, where he was joined by U.S. Attorney for the District of Maryland Erek Barron, MSP Superintendent Colonel Woodrow “Jerry” Jones, Secretary Robert Green of the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services (DPSCS), along with participating state and local law enforcement agencies.

“Addressing violent crime has been an important focus of our administration, and a critical piece of that has been increasing collaboration and coordination,” said Governor Hogan. “I want to thank U.S. Attorney Barron for his partnership, and for his strong commitment to tackling violent crime. By working together, we are going to use every tool at our disposal to make our neighborhoods safer.”

Montgomery County Man Wins $20,000 Playing Mega Millions; Same Man Won $100,000 Playing Powerball Last Year

A Montgomery County man won $20,000 playing Mega Millions with a ticket he purchased at the Wheaton Exxon at 11310 Georgia Avenue, according to the Maryland Lottery. The same individual also won $100,000 playing Powerball in 2021.

Per MD Lottery: Monday’s visit to Lottery headquarters wasn’t the first for a Montgomery County man who chose the alias “Moe” to tell his winning story. “Moe” was on familiar ground when he turned in a Mega Millions ticket worth $20,000. While he doesn’t buy tickets for every Mega Millions and Powerball drawing, he told Lottery officials that he always plays one of these two jackpot games. “I won $100,000 playing Powerball just last year,” he said. The 40-year-old electrician discovered his recent win last weekend when getting coffee. “I checked the Mega Millions results as I was waiting. Then, I looked at my ticket.” The father of three didn’t react when he saw several matching numbers on his quick-pick ticket for the Oct. 28 drawing. He matched four of the five white balls and the Mega Ball and then doubled his prize with a 2x Megaplier.

Inflation Rising The Second Least in DC Metro Area Out of 22 Major Metropolitan Statistical Areas in the Country, According to Report

With the year-over-year inflation rate at 7.7% in October, the personal-finance website WalletHub today released its report on the Cities Where Inflation is Rising the Most. The DC Metropolitan Area, where Montgomery County is located, came in at 21st of 22 Major Statistical Areas.

To determine the cities where inflation is rising the most – and thus is the biggest problem – WalletHub compared 22 major MSAs (Metropolitan Statistical Areas) across two key metrics involving the Consumer Price Index, which measures inflation. We compared the Consumer Price Index for the latest month for which BLS data is available to two months prior and one year prior to get a snapshot of how inflation has changed in the short and long term.

Foxtrot to Open First Maryland Location in Bethesda on Friday, November 18

Foxtrot announced today that its fifth DMV-area location at Bethesda Row (7262 Woodmont Ave.) will officially open to the public on Friday, November 18. Visitors who download and use the Foxtrot App opening week will receive a gift while supplies last. Guests will be able to celebrate the grand opening with an all-day celebration on Friday, November 18, from 4-7PM, featuring live music, food, and drinks. The 4,000-square-foot space’s renovation was reimagined by Foxtrot’s in-house design team in partnership with Studio Saint as interior designer.

Foxtrot offers its signature all-day café experience, complete with thoughtfully sourced coffee, seasonal café drinks, fresh smoothies, breakfast tacos, chef-prepared salads and bowls, and delicious grab-and-go meals for lunch and dinner. Hammad is 5-feet, 1-inch tall and weighs approximately 100 pounds. She has brown hair and brown eyes. She was last seen wearing a brown hooded sweatshirt and black and white patterned pants. She is believed to be in the company of 13-year-old, Jayleen Chavez. Police and family are concerned for her welfare.

Black Lion Cafe’s Opening Delayed

Over a year ago we let you know that Black Lion Café, which has a location at 9705 Traville Gateway Dr in Rockville, will be opening a new location in the Fenton Silver Spring apartments at 8240 Fenton St in Downtown Silver Spring. Originally scheduled to open on November 1, Source of the Spring now reports that opening has been postponed due to a delay in the cafe’s final inspection. A new opening date has not yet been announced.

The cafe opened its first location at the Traville Gateway shopping center in late 2016. Black Lion Café sources its coffee from three regions of Ethiopia known for producing some of the best tasting coffee beans in the world. Keffa, the region of Ethiopia that gave the name ‘coffee’ to the bean, Yergacheffe, and Harrar.

Beyond MoCo: Bojangles is Coming to Frederick

Bojangles, a southern fast food chain that specializes in Cajun fried chicken and biscuits, is coming to 1312 West Patrick St in Frederick. According to a report by @thecityoffrederickmd on Instagram, final Site plans for the restaurant were submitted to the City of Frederick Building/Permits Department for approval on October 24. Menu items include bone-in fried chicken, chicken strips, biscuits, sweet tea, green beans, and dirty rice. According to their website, Bojangles’ has restaurants in 12 states, as well as an international location in Honduras. Currently the closest locations to Montgomery County are in Sterling, VA and New Carrolton, MD.

In August we reported that Rise Southern Biscuits & Righteous Chicken is coming to 16248 Frederick Rd in Gaithersburg, in the recently renovated Rock Grove Center on the corner of 355 and Shady Grove Rd. The center is also home to Minerva Indian Cuisine, Qdoba, and the recently relocated Dunkin Donuts. The North Carolina-based biscuit chain is known for their buttermilk-brined chicken and currently has Maryland locations in Columbia and Towson. Menu items include biscuit sandwiches, biscuits & gravy, fried chicken strips, and donuts. The restaurant is expected to open this fall.

WWE Superstar, Omos, Surprises His Family in Nigeria for the First Time in 14 Years (He Moved to the United States in 2008 to Attend High School in MoCo)

WWE Superstar Omos came off one of the biggest matches of his career at WWE’s pay per view “Crown Jewel” event in Saudi Arabia. Though he didn’t come away victorious, he did get to visit his family in Nigeria for the first time since moving to the United States to attend school and play basketball at Montrose Christian in Rockville back in 2008.

The 7’3, 335 Nigerian-born Jordan Omogbehin moved to America with his family and attended school/played basketball at Montrose Christian (photo below) for the 2008/2009 and 2009/2010 school years. He went on to attend and play for the University of South Florida before moving back to Maryland and attending/playing for Morgan State University. His college basketball career spanned from 2012 to 2015. Omogbehin signed with WWE in October 2018, and made his in-ring debut a couple years back at WrestleMania 37 in Tampa, FL. From the time he initially came to the United States, he hasn’t been able to make it back to visit his family until last week. Silver Diner in Gaithersburg is Building an Outdoor Patio That Can Remain Open in Any Weather

Many may have noticed the deconstruction of Silver Diner’s outdoor patio in Gaithersburg’s Rio Lakefront, but it is just temporary and a new patio is on the way. We were told by an employee this morning that the diner is planning on constructing a new outdoor patio that can remain open in any weather. The patio will be covered to protect customers from precipitation and will have the ability to be heated in colder months. Silver Diner has experienced delays because the patio is situated above water and supports must all go beneath the water, but the diner expects the new patio to be ready to go in about a month.

Rockville-based Silver Diner, which opened its first restaurant in Montgomery County back in 1989, recently opened its first DC location at 1250 Half Street, SE (Ball Park/Navy Yard) on October 5th. Silver Diner co-founder/CEO Robert Giaimo and partner/executive chef Ype Von Hengst opened the first Silver Diner in Rockville in 1989. The duo visited over 500 diners across the country to prepare for the opening of Silver Diner, which was located in Mid-Pike Plaza, where Pike & Rose stands today. The Rockville location later moved to Federal Plaza, in the location that was previously home to Bennigan’s, where it remains today.

Per Montgomery County: Incumbent Councilmembers Gabe Albornoz, Evan Glass, Will Jawando and former Gaithersburg City Councilmember Laurie-Anne Sayles were the unofficial winners in the Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2022, Gubernatorial General Election for the four at-large seats on the Montgomery County Council. Incumbents Andrew Friedson (District 1) and Sidney Katz (District 3) were the unofficial winners in their respective district races. In the races for five open Council seats, Marilyn Balcombe (District 2), Kate Stewart (District 4), Kristin Mink (District 5), Natali Fani-González (District 6) and Dawn Luedtke (District 7) were unofficial winners.

“Serving the people of Montgomery County in this role has been the honor of my lifetime, and I’m humbled to continue to serve for another four years with new and diverse voices on the Council,” said Council President Albornoz. “I want to express my deepest gratitude to all of the outstanding bipartisan election workers, volunteers and staff at the Board of Elections for their service and tireless work this election season. As mail-in ballots continue to be counted, Montgomery County’s elections team is hard at work ensuring that all County voices are heard through our democratic process.”
